Note

Crap day but some interesting discoveries. Run tomorrow hopefully at last...

Monday Mar 30, 2009 #

Walk 50:00 [2]

Walk with Jono from work then up Mt Eden. Was fun going for a little adventure and we got to see the sun go down.

Sunday Mar 29, 2009 #

Note
(rest day)

Does walking from our car to the BBQ count?! Planned to go for a proper walk but it never happened. It was a very productive day though.

Event: The DUAL

Run race (The Dual) 2:43:09 [4] 21.0 km (7:46 / km) +553m 6:52 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 3

Started way too far back and spent the first part of the hill dodging peoples elbows (which always seemed to be at roughly the same height as my head for some reason) to get past them. Second climb up Rangitoto was fine too. The descent down was a little slow as it was basically single-file through the rocks. So I was doing pretty well for the first 12km until we hit the long, flat rocky section around the edge of Rangitoto where my feet hurt and I was feeling a bit dead. Didn't want to fall 'cause I don't think my bones would have coped too well with that. Hung on to the girl in front of me who was run/walking that section and that kept me going but I lost her at the end when I stopped to grab a drink and she kept going. Probably if I'd managed to stay with her I would have run a whole lot more of the final hill but by then I couldn't be bothered so there was a whole lot of walking. Was weird because the parts I did run were pretty okay and hills are the one thing I'm semi good at but I couldn't get myself to keep running. Happy to finish and feel okay about my time but I know I had more in there if I'd been willing to push it up that last hill.

Managed to hydrate myself though which was quite an achievement. Basically I've discovered that there's no point me drinking water 'cause it goes straight through me and I end up feeling even more thirsty. Electrolyte drinks watered down seem to be the best (started on Friday night). Only suffered a mild headache in the afternoon from too much sun waiting for Jono to clean his bike.

Run 20:00 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 4

Round the Domain. Just making sure my legs still worked in prep for tomorrow. The spa afterwards was good.

Thursday Mar 26, 2009 #

Orienteering race (SS Big King) 51:00 [2] 5.1 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 3

Round course 2 with Jono. We just cruised and walked up most of the hills. Had to wait for 50 bazillion scouts to clip one control though and then Dave Crofts tried to push in but I told him he had to get in line like the rest of us!

Wednesday Mar 25, 2009 #

Note
(rest day)

Still really tired but feeling less exhausted than I have been and sleeping better.

Tuesday Mar 24, 2009 #

Gym - Cardio warm up/down 10:00 [3]

Gym (Weights and core) 35:00 [3]

Set my alarm wrong so didn't get as long as usual.

Monday Mar 23, 2009 #

Run 35:17 [2] 6.4 km (5:31 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 4

OTH round dirt track to entrance then back along the road. Feeling stiff, tired and all round shocking. Hopefully it all passes by Saturday!

Sunday Mar 22, 2009 #

Run 1:02:26 [3]
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite 285

Running the Wairoa Loop Track in the Hunuas from the top. The gravel road to and from the track sucked but the walkway itself was pretty awesome although it went straight down and then straight back up so the last half was a bit of a push. The lookouts were impressive though. Feeling marginally better about next weekend now although I really can't work out what shoes I should be wearing.

Walk warm up/down 10:00 [2]
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite 285

Walking from the car to the Mangatawhiri Lookout to take some photos and then back again.

Saturday Mar 21, 2009 #

Walk 2:30:00 [2]
shoes: Asics Gel Trabuco IX WR

Walking the Waitomo and Ruakura walkways with Howie. Beautiful weather. Herded some cows (and managed to get a few to herd us too which was rather intimidating). The caves were really cool at Ruakura so we were happy tourists taking lots of photos! Pretty tired, hot and hungry by the time we got back so a nice dip in the pool was in order...

Friday Mar 20, 2009 #

Peloton (Spin) class 45:00 [4]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Jannelle took this morning's class and it was awesome...although I don't know if I'd have said that at the time!

Gym (Core) 10:00 [3]

Thursday Mar 19, 2009 #

Orienteering race (SS Lloyd Elsmore) 42:31 [3] 5.4 km (7:52 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 4

Round course 1 with Jono. Short and very easy course. Jono did pretty well but I've gotta get him working on the control circle a bit more...

Wednesday Mar 18, 2009 #

Note
(rest day)

Coldplay...epic.

Tuesday Mar 17, 2009 #

Run warm up/down (treadmill) 12:00 [2]
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 4

Was thinking about doing some sprint intervals but my legs felt too tired.

Gym (weights and core) 1:10:00 [3]

Monday Mar 16, 2009 #

Run 49:04 [2] 8.5 km (5:46 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 4

Round the edge of the park and then up to the summit via the dirt track. Legs felt super tired and stiff when I started out but they loosened a little after a while. Felt slow but was good to get outside.

Sunday Mar 15, 2009 #

Run long 1:41:00 [3]
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite 285

Over the hill to Tawharanui and along the South Coast trail to the end, back along the North Coast trail but back up onto the hills to the Lagoon then home. The last hill up the road was so hard. The shoes aren't that comfortable on concrete which didn't help. Was so relieved to reach the top! One hell of an exhausting run but good - scenery as usual was awesome.

Finished the day with a surf over at Anchor Bay. Awesome :)

Saturday Mar 14, 2009 #

Note
(rest day)

Crap weather but I'd rather we were hanging at the bay in crap weather than at home with crap weather. Went for a paddle with Jono on the boards and wandered down to check out the beginnings of what looks like some kind of breakwater. Always something new to see.

Friday Mar 13, 2009 #

Peloton (Spin) class 45:00 [5]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Breathing got really bad...GRRRRR. Other than that it was a good class. The last track was a killer though.

Gym (Core) 10:00 [3]

Thursday Mar 12, 2009 #

Rowing Machine warm up/down 5:00 [3]

Gym (weights and core) 1:15:00 [3]

Note

Very tired as I had so little sleep last night due to waking up around 3:45am and never managing to get back to sleep. Didn't need my alarm to get up for the gym other than to tell me what time it was. Frustrating.

Wednesday Mar 11, 2009 #

Run 1:01:51 [3] 11.1 km (5:34 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 4

Running home from work with Jono - same route as usual. Took it a bit easier today but because Jono is naturally a faster runner than me and had fresher legs it wasn't quite as easy as I had imagined! Tired now...I think I'll sleep well tonight!

Tuesday Mar 10, 2009 #

Orienteering (SS Auckland Domain) 51:08 [3] 6.6 km (7:45 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 3

Did course 1 since it wasn't too much longer than course 2 tonight. Was good fun but the course was much more of a running race than I like since I'm not so much of a runner. The spa afterwards was awesome though.

Monday Mar 9, 2009 #

Run 59:52 [4] 11.1 km (5:24 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 4

Running home from work with Jono over OTH summit (via dirt track as usual). My legs felt pretty tired and I felt a bit lightheaded by about halfway but it was a good run. Jono ran ahead and I caught up to him at various points which possibly increased my speed as I was probably subconsciously trying to catch up with him as usual. Can't believe I made it under an hour!

Sunday Mar 8, 2009 #

Orienteering race (Duders Regional Park) 1:05:57 [3] 5.7 km (11:34 / km)
shoes: Jalas Black FLX

It was steep! Most of the first half went really well until about #9 where I was a little out and from there I slowed right down. Breathing was fairly average I guess but I felt pretty weak. It was good fun though.

Saturday Mar 7, 2009 #

MTB (mtb) 2:15:00 [3]
shoes: Skulls

Out at Woodhill. Did a short warmup with Jono then sent him off on his way while I biked round cornerstone to the playground. Met up with Jono and some random guy there and we did the Bunderburg trail out to the far end of the park. On the way back I cut out onto the road as I was getting pretty tired and met the guys back at the playground. Just the usual route back from there. Was a BIG ride for me (we were out in the park for over 3 hours and I tend to freak out on tracks I'm not familiar with) so was pretty happy with how I went.

Orienteering (SS Ambury Park - night) 57:58 [2] 3.0 km (19:19 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Trabuco IX WR

Walking round course 2 with Jono. His navigation was really good tonight and it was good to listen to him talk through his route choice as we went. It was good fun but we just cruised. It's cool how the eyes on all the animals light up with your torchlight.

Friday Mar 6, 2009 #

Peloton (Spin) class 45:00 [5]
shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

My thighs were feeling the effects of last nights dash up OTH so the hills were even more tough than usual today. I am acing the sprints though (which I find weird 'cause I suck and sprinting on my feet...maybe it'll help me get faster!). Breathing was NOT good but I used all the breaks to try and get it under control and I (obviously) survived. Was a good class though.

Gym (Core) 10:00 [3]

Thursday Mar 5, 2009 #

Run 58:53 [3] 10.55 km (5:35 / km) +160m 5:11 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 4

Round OTH and up to the summit via the dirt track twice then back home the long way. Had a fair amount of energy in my legs for the first time in a while and seriously thought about a third summit attempt but the wind was getting stronger and I had rain blocking my ears so figured I should call it a day. Was good fun out there though (apart from being blown into a parked car - being on the small side I find the wind tends to seriously try and lift you off the ground). Breathing wasn't too bad either...really concentrated hard on keeping it down low. Doctor tomorrow...

Wednesday Mar 4, 2009 #

Note
(rest day)

So tired today.

Tuesday Mar 3, 2009 #

Orienteering race (SS Selfs Farm) 35:22 [3] *** 5.4 km (6:33 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 3

Breathing wasn't great but not nearly as bad as yesterday which was a relief. My legs were feeling it though. Was a pretty easy course. Jono started just before me (he said it was so I could help him if he got lost) and I was surprised he didn't get further ahead of me 'cause I wasn't going that fast.

Monday Mar 2, 2009 #

Run 1:01:47 [3] 11.1 km (5:34 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 4

Home from work via OTH dirt track to summit. Felt sort of okay most of the way until the roundabout at OTH where my breathing went bad. Not sure I ate enough today or what I did eat didn't go down too well as I felt weird and weak. Made it home though in an okay time! Hurt all over (well, everywhere apart from my legs which were okay) in the evening though.

Sunday Mar 1, 2009 #

Walk 50:00 [2]
shoes: Asics Gel 2120

I wanted to go for a run this afternoon once it cooled down but it was a tough day moving furniture and then we fell asleep and when I woke up I felt like crap so walking it was. Felt like running once I'd been out for a bit but resisted 'cause I was wearing my deadly shoes and I had been feeling panicky today which isn't good for the breathing.
