3 PM

Road Bike 2:05:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Tandeming it up with M around my favourite route. Up and over Dyers, round the harbour and then up Gebbies and the Basdrat, along the summit Rd and back down to home. Good last minute prep for the hill climb time trial on Tuesday!!

Walk 1:47:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 8

Started off running (and testing out the new pack) but got as far as the bushline before having to stop 'cause I felt like throwing up. Thought I'd see how I felt walking, which felt okay, so kept going. Along the tops I started to feel really upset for some reason and it was hard to keep going and get back down but then M took me out for a delicious souvlaki lunch and I felt a little more stable. Things just feel so crazy and I can't find my footing.

Road Bike 30:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Ooo, the road bike...outside! M offered to drive me back down the hill if I wanted to ride up so I rode round the block for a few minutes first to see if it was going to be okay then headed up Dyers to the kiwi. Would have gone further but M was having some car trouble so it seemed safer to stop there. Wrist seemed okay riding but since I can't hold the brakes or go onto the drops we'll have to come up with some other solution.

Run 47:44 [3]

Wednesday night run, the Dallington Red Zone tour edition. Quite entertaining!

5 PM

Road Bike warm up/down 30:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Riding out to the time trial and a warmup beforehand. Fortunately it was a little bit warmer and there wasn't any cold droplets of rain by the time we got out there.
6 PM

Road Bike race (Old Tai Tapu Rd TimeTrial) 25:24 [4] 16.0 km (1:35 / km)
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

It must have been more of a headwind than it seemed heading out as we just weren't able to get that fast a pace. Legs were giving it all they had though. Much better on the way back but felt like I was going to keel over as I got off the bike! M reckons when it's warmer we'll go faster. I don't understand how that works. But anyway, next week is the hill climb up Gebbies and the Basdrat instead so that will no doubt be even more painful but it's my favourite climb so I'm a bit excited!
7 PM

Road Bike warm up/down 25:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Back home again. Slowly!

Monday Nov 25, 2013 #

6 PM

Run 48:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7

It was really quite wet outside so took M's advice and headed along the river then headed up around the old route I used to run when we first moved in including the stairs of DOOM. I definitely run up hills stronger now. Less than 2 weeks till we move...excited!!

Note
(injured)

More putting out of controls and water but this time in the heat. Luckily I managed to find lots of keen people to bring all the controls back in for me.

Saturday Nov 23, 2013 #

Note
(injured)

Several hours putting out controls in the mist and getting chased around by cows.

Friday Nov 22, 2013 #

11 AM

Run 1:23:52 [3]
(injured) shoes: Inov-8 Flyroc 310 (grey)

From Bowenvale up through Vic Park on various mtb tracks, along the tops and over Mt Vernon then down the zig zag. Legs still feeling a bit dead but better than Wednesday. Got stung twice by bumblebees. Not sure what I did to anger them so much!

Thursday Nov 21, 2013 #

Note

My goal by the MTBO carnival is to be back to the same (or better - might need that for the earlier mission M has planned) cycling strength as before the accident. It would be nice to also be as close technically as I can but I'm not pushing that part. I think in reality I haven't really lost much at all technically, it's just that I am much more afraid which is fair enough. I need to cut myself some slack. In the last couple of weeks I am feeling more able to accept that I am riding very well for where I am instead of lamenting what was. Still struggling with comprehending the injury is permanent though :-(
10 AM

MTB 2:00:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Up the C2 and Kennedy's (made it up all of the steep bit until the rocks where I got lazy and tired) then very slowly down Worsleys which was so extremely rutted and has lots of gorse trying to attack you (well, not trying - succeeding). Should have taken the singletrack. That would have been better. Perfect cycling weather this morning though. Could have spent all day up there. I got nice and hot.

Wednesday Nov 20, 2013 #

6 PM

Run 1:01:20 [3]
(injured) shoes: Inov-8 Roclite-285

Wednesday night run from Lyttleton. It's quite steep, especially the road at the start which was just cruel and quite overgrown in places. My legs were feeling mega tired on the uphill.

5 PM

Road Bike warm up/down 25:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Riding over to the time trial and a very quick warmup up and down the road a couple of times. Enough to tell me it was going to be horrible!
6 PM

Road Bike race (Old Tai Tapu Rd TimeTrial) 25:50 [4] 16.0 km (1:37 / km)
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

So much suffering! There were some nice tailwind patches going out there but it was still quite blustery and hard work but coming back was really hard. There were even a couple of patches where we weren't even able to keep above 30km. Was so relieved that we managed to keep under 26 minutes.

Road Bike warm up/down 25:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Slow ride home with Joe.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Tired and a bit depressed. Feels a bit like I'm over everything or hanging in some kind of limbo. Sleeping horribly at the moment too. Hopefully once we move and work starts and all that I can get some kind of routine going which will hopefully help.

Sunday Nov 17, 2013 #

Note

My application to the World Rogaine Champs has been accepted so it looks like I'm off to America for a world of pain!
11 AM

Orienteering race (Canterbury Champs Long) 2:08:14 [3]
(injured) shoes: Inov-8 Roclite-285

Still feeling kind of over it but navigated mostly okay (for me on this map) except for the disaster of #3 and annoying deviations off my bearings. Going super slow so as not to get lost and not to fall over.

Saturday Nov 16, 2013 #

11 AM

Orienteering race (Canterbury Champs Sprint) 36:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Inov-8 Flyroc 310 (grey)

Race 1
Got pretty much hopelessly confused at #2 but most of the rest was kind of okay getting within a few metres of the control but not actually in finding it. I was going at snail pace too. Mostly had the feeling of not really wanting to be out here again though.
3 PM

Orienteering race (Canterbury Champs Sprint) 27:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Inov-8 Flyroc 310 (grey)

Race 2 Chasing Start
Really wasn't in the mood this afternoon. Struggled all over the show but did manage to almost catch up Emily before getting horribly confused at the map flip.
4 PM

MTB 1:20:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Really nice ride from the event to Castle Hill Village, over the Hogs Back then up to Cave Stream. Was riding pretty well and feeling happy again. Kind of wished I'd just gone riding all day instead.

Friday Nov 15, 2013 #

1 PM

Orienteering race (Canterbury Champs Middle) 1:28:58 [3]
(injured) shoes: Inov-8 Roclite-285

Struggled a bit on the first control but was sort of going okay until leaving #7 when I slipped on some pine needles and yeah, that wasn't good. Sort of wandered around aimlessly for the next 5 minutes wondering what to do so by then I was pretty much lost and was pondering if I was in danger of going off the map! Decided to keep going since I'm stubborn but #11 was a disaster 'cause it never occured to me that the control would actually be right on the beach so I never looked that far out. #12 was also a bit useless. Near the end of the course Emily caught me up and we did some blundering together. I really couldn't be bothered by then though.

Note

Handed in my final assignment. Yay!

Wednesday Nov 13, 2013 #

8 PM

Run 36:31 [3]
(injured) shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7

I was looking over courses with M and missed the wed night run so instead went out afterwards for a rather late little run up Huntsbury and down Major Aiken. Lucky I wore a polypro 'cause it was cold! Feeling a bit blah.

Tuesday Nov 12, 2013 #

5 PM

Road Bike warm up/down 28:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Riding out to the time trial and a bit of a warm up beforehand.
6 PM

Road Bike race (Old Tai Tapu Rd TimeTrial) 25:12 [4] 16.0 km (1:35 / km)
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Oh god, so painful tonight! It never felt like we got a tail wind but we sure got a head wind! Was feeling pretty dizzy in the last few minutes and had this crazy fear I might fall off the back of the tandem! Even Chris commented I looked like I was in pain when he came past the other way! Afterwards I had to sit down until I stopped feeling so dizzy! It was tough out on the course tonight, that's for sure!
7 PM

Road Bike warm up/down 25:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Warmdown ride back home with Emily and Chris. It was pretty cold out tonight.

Monday Nov 11, 2013 #

Note

Spent a couple of hours looking at control sites with M but then it got cold and late.

Sunday Nov 10, 2013 #

MTB 3:10:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Excellent fun with everyone up Rapaki, along Witch Hill, Castle Rock, dodgy rockfall summit Rd, Mt Pleasant, Greenwood Park and down Captain Thomas with a very thirsty, hungry blast round the road back to Fava afterwards. Riding really well today but by the time we got to Captain Thomas I was really struggling to hold the brakes. It was like my hand was giving up. Oh well, still made it down okay :-)

Saturday Nov 9, 2013 #

10 AM

Road Bike 9:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Tried to go out on the tandem with M and Tane (obviously he wasn't on the tandem too otherwise that could have been amusing!) but we got partway up Hackthorne Rd and got a puncture on the back wheel which is an absolute mission to fix so abandoned that which was very tragic :-(
4 PM

MTB 2:00:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Up the C2 and Kennedy's then down the 4wd in Vic Park with M. Got a good 3/4 of the way up the final steep bit on Kennedy's before bailing early in the rocks. Much better than I expected I'd be (yep, I think I will be able to get all the way up no worries in a couple of months or so) but it was tough work on the wrist getting up over all the bumps so it was very tired on the downhill.

Friday Nov 8, 2013 #

12 PM

Run 1:37:20 [3]
(injured) shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 8

Solved my total price function and another SQL mystery so figured I deserved a break in the sunshine! From Bowenvale up through Vic Park, along the tops and all that jazz including the longer way up Mt Vernon then down through the valley. Legs are feeling jaded funnily enough but otherwise I was fine until fairly horrible 'girl' pain decided to hit just before the descent. Had to stop a few times on the way down and die slowly by the side of the track!

Thursday Nov 7, 2013 #

9 AM

MTB 1:00:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Quick ride up Rapaki and Mt Vernon and down Huntsbury/Major Aiken before heading into class. Feeling kinda unfit uphill riding-wise.

Wednesday Nov 6, 2013 #

6 PM

Run 1:31:17 [3]
(injured) shoes: Inov-8 Flyroc 310 (grey)

Wednesday night hummus run up Huntsbury and Mt Vernon, partway down the valley then down Montgomery Spur, dodging the grumpy cows. Walked back with Emily from the bottom of Rapaki as her ankle was unhappy.

Tuesday Nov 5, 2013 #

5 PM

Road Bike warm up/down 30:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Tandeming out to Old Tai Tapu Rd and a bit of a warmup before we started.
6 PM

Road Bike race (Old Tai Tapu Rd TimeTrial) 25:00 [4] 16.0 km (1:34 / km)
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

On the tandem with M. Headwinds on the way out which felt tough but quite speedy on the way back, averaging about 42-44 km/hr. Just 1 second away from breaking into the 24s!! I felt shattered afterwards.
7 PM

Road Bike warm up/down 25:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Revo XR

Warmdown "race" back home with Emily and Chris.

Note

Had my specialist appointment today followed by buying sugary treats to console myself. He's decided on the conservative approach which is do nothing and he'll see me again in 6 months. I got the distinct impression he didn't really know what, if anything could be done. Taking out the plate could quite possibly make it just the same, if not worse. Was about what I suspected. I think basically, if the pain becomes unbearable and I can't deal with it like it is then he might try something but otherwise he will probably just leave it as is. Although I may have misinterpreted the whole thing...? Perhaps I should ask M what he got out of it!
7 PM

Walk 54:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 (blue)

Good times stomach pain. Did make it out for a walk though which was about the most I could do.

Sunday Nov 3, 2013 #

10 AM

MTB race (Rabbit Island MTB Rogaine) 1:57:53 [4]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Other than more fences (which were a bit easier than yesterday but I was in a lot more pain) and my map board flying off so having to spend several minutes trying to fix that, it was okay. Quite a fun map although some mysterious mapping in places...

Saturday Nov 2, 2013 #

Note

Put in our registration for the World Rogaine Champs. Fingers crossed we get in!
1 PM

MTB race (NZ MTBO Champs) 2:14:53 [3]
(injured) shoes: Louis Garneau Monte Rosa MTB

Yeah, not that great. I didn't get the memo about where the start triangle was and got confused by the control flag at the start itself so the map didn't make sense for ages, then we were told that you could ride through light yellow but not dark yellow (not correct) and this threw me so much I had no idea what to do for #2. Just stood staring at the map for ages in frustration. Then there were endless fences that didn't have opening gates which is all fine for everyone else but I can't lift my bike over fences any more. I probably lost at least 10 minutes trying and caused quite a lot of pain (on once fence alone, getting to #4, I spent a good 5 minutes at the stupid fence). Was pretty upset, frustrated and in pain by the time I got out of that section that I was over it which was sad 'cause it was much nicer after that. Riding was all fine I guess.
