Running 42:05 [1] 4.84 mi (8:42 / mi) +124m 8:03 / mi

And that's a wrap! Gave my Astrophysics exam this morning. Wow, can't believe my first term is done!

Legs a bit better, but still not fully recovered. Standard Springwater-Sellwood, with attempting to connect to 37th at the beginning.

The the President's Christmas party. Snazzy house, good to catch up with some people, say in the Humanities, that I haven't seen since new faculty orientation.

Wow, I thought my legs felt fine until I tried to run! Just scampering out to Golden Gate Park unfortunately without Mikkel because his foot was injured. I think it was mostly my hamstrings being tight that didn't let me move quick. Felt totally pathetic going at 10.00/mile jogging pace and having many more people pass me than normal.

Orienteering 13:55 [1] 1.09 mi (12:46 / mi) +99m 9:58 / mi

Since I was running by where the final sprint was yesterday, had a bit of a map run to just read and run at the same time.

Running 26:44 [1] 2.81 mi (9:31 / mi) +76m 8:47 / mi

Passed the Hippie zone on the way back. And was passed by two ultra-runner looking women. (Something about lots of water bottles and long socks, I think is the look?)

Point Lobos, Golden Gate NRA
Stage Two of Sprint the Golden Gate and first round of the Sprint Tourney

With the declaration that there would indeed be 3 races today as of 5pm last night (thanks to Mikkell for the call+messages!), I threw together my stuff and just barely made it onto my flight to SFO from Portland, whew!

I was seeded into heat 6 for this first round of the tournament and started off, but eep! Both sides of my 'map' were blank!

Lost maybe 10-15 seconds, so had people to chase to 1 and then 2, but the leaders took off within the VA hospital to try to get to 3, and I did the immediate necessary 180 and pulled ahead. Still in contact with others, but mostly leading through 6 and then I didn't sense the others thereafter.

Imperfectly executed routes:
5->6: Should have immediately turned around for a bit shorter and less climb.
8->9: I choose low route, Vlad says high route was probably fastest.
11->12: I took safer/less energy road route, should have just contoured.
13->14: Took indistinct trail instead of staircase from circle in the first instance, should have kept better track of direction.
14->15: Should have tried more direct, I went through 12.
15->16: Stopped at other control near 15 just to check it's code. I should have been confident enough not to... I also rather daintly avoided vegetation right around 16, but no olive green, so I guess didn't have to.

Adolph's Bathing, Golden Gate NRA
Stage Three of Sprint the Golden Gate

In the first heat of the Antelopes to start. I was slow from the start and perhaps 5th of 6 to punch 1 and 2. Then passed Nadja and was chasing down Mikkel, Martin and Janne through the next controls.

I saw 7 and saw Mikkel heading away from it, double checked my map and went up to punch. But then my big mistake of the race, I didn't vault over the 1m high chain link fence, which was marked as crossable. I guess I just wasn't in the mind frame in a sprint that that was a crossable feature. So lost time and went through 9 on my way to 8 and had to start chasing down again.

Martin lost time trying to get to 13 through the bushes, so then Mikkel was leading and I was second. But, another crucial moment was 16. I did unfold the map to read the control description that it was at the SW foot, but I didn't read that it was the top wall, not the bottom one. So both I and Mikkel lost time going the longer way around to get to the proper level. Left Martin with enough of a lead for the win, with Mikkel and them myself trailing in not far back.

The Lost Herd at Golden Gate Park
Stage Four and Final of the Sprint Tournament

Yay! So happy that the 3rd race of the day was snuck in! Final heat was myself, Will E., Mikkel, Martin, Rex and Nadja.

I found the incorrect little trail from the start and ended up fighting through some green and trailing behind the others. I took the low route to 3 and gained a bit of time, others went left. Will was firmly in the lead with Mikkel in second, with Rex and Martin and I trading around. I was in pretty good contact with Mikkel until my choice to 12 to use the road didn't go so well - there was no room for a pedestrian because of bushes growing into the road, so almost run over a few times.

I did find the little trail that led right to the control, but doubted the fork off from it actually to the control because of the downed tree fully across it. Came back as Rex led the way back there.

Almost passed the trail off the road to 14 (must stay focused!), was pretty much racing Martin by this point. He chose better to stay low to 17 and pulled ahead. But I cut through where 16 was to get to 18 and gained the lead over him. I knew there wasn't much left so focused to punch 19 and then kept map reading to 20 and the finish. Was totally surprised Martin wasn't right there, but he had missed 19 in the first instance.

So 3rd overall, 1st woman. Good to get some good sprinting in!

Flagstaff workout, but had to do it without a partner, so I just did 90s on, 90s off for 25 minutes. It rained on me.

Morning run before the last lecture. Pretty wimpy, mostly to go get cash for faculty lunch from the nearest ATM. And a stop at Last Cup Coffee on the way home, right as it was opening at 6am.
