Orienteering 1:14:12 [3] 7.5 km (9:54 / km)

BAOC A-meet Day 2: Calero County Park

This time Red, but ended up pre-running along with Greg and Carol. (Guaranteed getting to the airport on time, which is very nice!)

Told myself I had to be feistier since I was running a shorter course than yesterday and I think it worked! I did more contouring than yesterday, I think. Unsure if it was the fastest to #14 and 18, but wasn't bad at least.

Only two bobbles, but they weren't great. First, I parallel feature errored up a reentrant from 15 to 16 and then came out to a control on a tree, just as expected. But not my code! Eep! Ok, where is the trail, it's right there, hm, I'm quite close to it ah, ok, another tree 80m E...

Second bobble was right at the finish, #19. Basically I didn't see the cliff under the circle, came to it first and was totally bewildered by the absence of a control. Really, it's not here? Search, search. Then look at map. Ohhhhh. Scurry on.

Nice to have a more racing feel today, but this is totally different than NAOC style terrain. Ah well, got some good practice finding controls, reading a map on a run and it was fun, if tough! =) Thanks BAOC!

BAOC meet at Calero County Park

Up at 4am to catch a direct flight Portland -> San Jose. Whisked away from the airport and then time to orienteer!

Whoa hilly! Glad I didn't start too fast, that took a bit! Didn't feel too feisty out there, but I guess that's hard when it's this steep.

#1 - Lost some time thinking it might be possible to get through the green, it wasn't.
#3 - Moment of confusion as to where I came out on the stream as I couldn't sense the other branch, guessed I was too high and correct.
#7 - Distracted by someone else, looked first one yellow too low.
#11 - Bad route, better to approach in from the left.
#12 - Too low on the hillside. For how low I was the trail would have been the better option.
#15 - Too low, these contours are *big*.
#16 - Momentary indecision if I had passed trail while bombing down reentrant bottom when I came out in the flat, stopped, considered, continued on, found trail.
#17 - Non-ideal time to leave the lake bottom, should have stayed around the corner and past the fence, I think.
#18 - Boo, worst bit of the course. Searched in a one-too-early reentrant. Partly distracted by someone else going up it, partly I thought that it looked more like the contour form for the next reentrant (was reentranty all the way to the stream, unlike what the form line suggests? Maybe form line is trying to tell me where the hill starts?)
#20 - Should have read clue. I was looking for a thicket, not a downed tree.
#22 - Slog!!!

Rollerskiing 29:43 [1] 3.71 mi (8:01 / mi) +72m 7:33 / mi

Evening roller ski after an hour and a half of sorting out thesis students. I have three, one who will work on HNC as a dense molecular gas tracer, one who will work on star formation (still need to narrow quite a bit) and one on reflection nebulae. I don't know tons about the latter, but here goes!
