Note

It mega-rained this afternoon, changing to a bit of snow right before dinner. What will the wax be? Who knows, but we will scheme to find it!

Tomorrow is the model, where we actually get to ski around tracks here at Lesnoye where all the races will be. It'll also be the time we test skis, ski structures and wax. Hopefully the conditions will emulate race-day Tuesday at least to some degree, but we'll just have to use Alex's wax-sleuthing smarts in case not...
11 AM

XC skiing 12:57 intensity: (6 @0) + (2:48 @1) + (10:03 @2) 1.6 mi (8:06 / mi) +17m 7:50 / mi
ahr:133 max:148

Warm up loop around the outer edge. Slow suction-y snow...

Ski-O 28:31 intensity: (2:32 @1) + (17:25 @2) + (8:34 @3) 3.03 mi (9:25 / mi) +4m 9:22 / mi
ahr:147 max:164 16c

Alex-designed ski-o o-tervals! Great to do these, getting our ski-o feet wet at higher speeds. I cruised through them pretty well, I think came to two full stops, both times due to criss-crossing lines. Oh, and then once was heading to the wrong number 2 for a bit.

Would have been harder on fast snow, but still very good to get into the right mind!

XC skiing 5:03 intensity: (4:28 @1) + (35 @2) 0.64 mi (7:53 / mi)
ahr:122 max:133

A little break, just skiing, lots of folks out and about!

Ski-O 18:05 intensity: (8 @0) + (12:35 @1) + (5:07 @2) + (15 @3) 1.63 mi (11:06 / mi) +5m 10:59 / mi
ahr:119 max:156 8c

And skiing my own o-tervals, just easy, but I lost focus and got real lost almost from the beginning, bah! Suppose a good lesson in relocation and such...

XC skiing 2:13 intensity: (47 @1) + (1:26 @2) 0.34 mi (6:31 / mi)
ahr:131 max:138

Scampering quickly back to the bus, but oh, it was going to take a bonus 30 min anyways, ah well! Got a good stretch in and had team chattime!

Note

Also, we found out from Markku at dinner that the place we are staying is basically the Soviet Ski Academy for cross-country skiing. Neat! Where Vladimir Smirnov trained when he was a lad... It used to be full to the brim in those days, which maybe would be ~200 students? It's a big building. Now there are 35 students or so.
10 AM

Running 28:19 intensity: (59 @0) + (11:53 @1) + (15:27 @2) 2.91 mi (9:44 / mi) +44m 9:18 / mi
ahr:125 max:149

Woo! The five of us made it to ski-WOC location at Lesnoye Sports School late last night (10.30pm or so) and Anna is on her way!

After sleeping amazingly well, we breakfasted (rice pudding with butter, mmmm), were marched around to find the wax room and stadium where we'll finish, and then went out for a group joggeroo down the road to get the legs a-moving!
3 PM

Ski-O 1:14:16 intensity: (41:43 @1) + (32:33 @2) 8.32 mi (8:56 / mi) +27m 8:50 / mi
ahr:125 max:154

Woo! First ski-o training here! We drove over to Sinegorje in a sauna-like van, obtained maps and headed out to play. Great network of little sprint trails and solid snow so not boggy. Good to get out ski-o-ing.

I did a few pick-up like things, trying to use good ski-o techniques to move fast on the little trails. A little practice of quick 180 degree changes of direction too (we're using standard SI, not touch-free, so this is important). I felt a bit non-expert out there, as I haven't been on narrow trails much.

Other thing, is it was hard to know when to change the map orientation, I think I usually only change it at the beginning of each leg, and then brain just keeps track of the winding, unlike foot-o. (Having it change orientation fewer times is worth it, else you have to look entirely different places on map holder every time you turn a corner.) Today we didn't have any controls on our maps, so made my normal approach tough!

Note

Arrived in Almaty safe and sound with the crew (all of us sans Anna), one last little flight will land is in Oskemen mid-afternoon!
2 PM

Drills 11:00 [1]

Prancing around with Alex (and a bit by Adrian) outside the UKK airport, while waiting for a ride to the pizza place. After oodles of sitting, some leg-stretching was just necessary!!

Running 5:00 [1]

Joggering around, amusing the smokers/bus waiters.

Note

Wow, busy times, trying to make sure I tie up all possible work loose-ends for the next 2 weeks... One thing we're not sure about is if we'll have internet access at the Lesnoye Sport School that we're staying at in Kazakhstan. In case not and folks want to follow along here are some links:

Official Ski-WOC 2013 site - will have results, almost certainly, probably some sort of live coverage?
IOF website Should report the biggest headlines
World of O Also might report the biggest headlines
Team USA Blog If we have internet, we'll put reports/pictures here!

And then us all on AP:

6 PM

Running 24:11 intensity: (24 @0) + (54 @1) + (19:52 @2) + (3:01 @3) 2.66 mi (9:05 / mi) +1m 9:05 / mi
ahr:138 max:164

Whoa there winter! It did the whole instant-freeze-on-impact rain thing for a bit, then big huge slow-moving snowflakes that were getting blown about like crazy - it felt like you were in a giant snow globe!

I played with the idea of going back to the rec center for gym rat redux, but didn't really fancy heading back out on the roads in my car. Soo a little putter on the bike path and a few drills.

Drills 5:52 intensity: (2:54 @1) + (2:58 @2) 0.33 mi (17:33 / mi)
ahr:130 max:141

Strength 3:05 [0] 0.01 mi (5:10:08 / mi)
ahr:77 max:84

10, 10, 10 x 3 for the hammies, this time while heating up some of Tony Packo's famous chili. Living up the Toledo life =)

Note

Found out my observing run in AZ is April 13-14 so not conflicting with Pig! Now registered for Flying Pig for the first time ever! (Running Blue. Bring it boys. =))
4 PM

Running 3:44 intensity: (9 @0) + (2:57 @1) + (38 @2) 0.46 mi (8:07 / mi) +32m 6:41 / mi
ahr:123 max:140 weight:153.8lbs

Aerobics 51:44 intensity: (57 @0) + (47:23 @1) + (3:24 @2) 1.44 mi (35:56 / mi) +12m 35:02 / mi
ahr:111 max:140

My Zumba day! I like having this rhythm to my week, it's a good thing to do after a busy weekend, kinda relaxing, still aerobic, definitely fun! My shimmy skills are still rock-bottom. Decoupling upper torso from hips just is super awkward for me!

Strength 14:19 intensity: (11:18 @0) + (3:01 @1) 0.48 mi (29:51 / mi)
ahr:83 max:111

Core15. My officemate and the grad student he always works out with (tough, manly, weight-lifting workouts that I get to hear *all* about =)) came for the class too. A good one, but she really need to incorporate at least some side stuff!

Rowing 10:04 intensity: (16 @0) + (52 @1) + (8:56 @2)
ahr:136 max:150

Token 10 min of rowing for the week. It is a good workout, but 10 min is about as much as I can stand. At least, without earphones. Probs will switch this up to just running after ski season though...

Running 5:08 intensity: (13 @0) + (3:10 @1) + (1:45 @2) 0.54 mi (9:36 / mi) +3m 9:26 / mi
ahr:121 max:137
