Running 36:00 [2]

A mostly trail run as Hilary, high school friend, navigated using trails to the first and back from the last control. Scale totally caught her at the beginning (even though it was 1:15) =), but then she did pretty ok, she found it frustrating to try to read the map while running and also wasn't super good at keeping it oriented. She probably won't really become and orienteer, cause she does too many other crazy sports, but still, fun times!

BHT 16->11 with Hilary following me, we didn't have tons of time, and I think she would have gotten frustrated trying to find not-existing flags... But, I tried to explain exactly what I was looking for and using to navigate to her, which was also good training for me!

Note

Oops, forgot to bring a 2nd dress for the post-wedding brunch. Ah well, back into the same one, added a shawl and dressed it down with flip-flops instead of heels, totally counts like a different outfit, right? =)

Brunch was awesome. Breakfast is an amazing meal to start and brunch is even better, because things like grilled marinated veggies show up!

Running warm up/down 14:00 [2]

And had time to kill before Alex and I had schemed to make gougères so went back to the Blue Hills. I mean, it was on the way, who could resist?

First parking lot was full, so went around to the ski area and ran out to control 9 from the 2 years ago BHT course.

BHT from 2 years ago from 9

I hadn't felt particularly fiesty with pushing the running the previous two workouts, so thought about that. Did move a bit faster, I think. And there was amazing non-rocky hillside part way through, wonderful to fly down it!

Gougère cooking at the Alex and Ed home.

French recipe with Gruyère totally beats out the American (epicurious) recipe with white wine and blue cheese... Scrumptious!

Orienteering 1:05:00 [3]

Straight from Logan to Blue Hills, albeit a bit detoured because I first headed on 93 North. Met Ed in the parking lot and we both decided to dot last years' BHT course backwards. So off!

Good to run on a 1:15 map, and for not having controls out in the woods, I think it might actually be a bit better to visit sites you've been to before, some slight recognition when you get there, instead of a major pause to be sure. Anyways, tried the not-big-road route 24->23 and that was no good, the trail really must do something different than on the map, think folks that went that way discovered so in the race...

21 there were a lot of rocks around. I found a clump that had a streamer in the right place-ish...

Tried the road route 23->22, not a bad idea, but the trail to the N is probably faster, nasty coming in from the road.

18 could have used a bit more respect, I wasn't confident that I had aimed enough off to the west and was scared.

Sooo thirsty when I got back, hot out!! Then another changeroo and to wedding #2 of the weekend, over in Cohasset.

(rest day)

Wake up early early (3am) and to Minneapolis! When I got there, had to finish reviewing a paper for a journal, then got to have a city wander, meeting friends at an awesome cafe (Asper) and then we rented their city bikes for the day and headed over to the Walker sculpture garden. Then changeroo and to friends wedding at the Old Mill Museum!

A modified SSDTAAT or whatever those initials were. Bonus 'Ali' butterfly, hilly hill x 2.

So much easier to push knowing others are out there racing, and chasing them down. Happy I was in L5 for so much of it. Unless that's just cause my body is wiped from travel. Although isn't it harder to get HR up when your'e tired? Slightly off on the tricky controls in the woods both times, more the first one, PG beat me down the hill both times.

Caught at 17 for a bit b/c of construction and then 24 was confused by the lack of stairs passage thingy but not for long.

Super good times having orienteering company! First Bub's dinner in awhile afterwards. Tried the bison burger for the first time. Good, but doesn't beat the catfish or pulled pork.

Met up with Frederic at the Bures-sur-Yvette station immediately after leaving team meeting. He picked up my stuff in his car, I took off to head to Orsay. He was thinking of joining me for the o, but his flight from Chile got delayed a day so only came this morning...

1st sprint course on Neil's l'accélérateur map at Orsay! Only in one area did there seem to be something major new not on the map that confused me for a smidgen. Then one other time just totally messed up, had to go back around the edge of a building, was doing too much cruising on the road...

Orienteering 14:48 intensity: (25 @1) + (1:12 @2) + (3:09 @3) + (9:45 @4) + (17 @5) 1.74 mi (8:30 / mi) +18m 8:14 / mi
ahr:165 max:178 18c

And round 2! No as big mistakes, pace was slightly slower though. Hmph. Was still trying!!

Running from Bures to Courcelles to Frederic's house, so so dehydrated by the end... gulped down water and enjoyed smell of freshly cooking leeks.
