Long ski at Northfield, in a last ditch effort to be prepared for my 42k in France next weekend! Legs/lower back a bit tired from yesterday's race, but not bad.

Beautiful day out. Most of the trails had been groomed, and those were delightful. The few that weren't were sheets of ice. I zigged and zagged all over the mountain, did a bit of double pole only part way through, was definitely getting tired through the end. There isn't much flat out there on the mountain, mostly a V1 fest, but a few trails that cross that you get more transition-y terrain.

XC skiing warm up/down 12:00 [2]

Bit of a warm-up chatting with Nance, then a bit on my own as I had more time. Familiar trails!

XC skiing race 28:19 [4]

10k skate at Silver Fox Trot Eastern Cup

Woo, first real ski race of the season! (Maybe will only do 3??) 2nd for the open women's 10k, 32 seconds back from Hannah Dreissigacker, who is training with the Craftsbury Green Team for biathalon. We both had the home course advantage, being at Dartmouth's ski area, Oak Hill. It helps, especially with fast snow.

Anyways, race went well, snow and skis were super fast (thanks CSU!), but I had to pass a million people since I started from an unranked seed. Probably took a few seconds out, but definitely not the 32 to Hannah, so no worries. Skiing is way different than orienteering for the crowd factor. I mean, it's not a super spectator friendly sport, but people were spotted all over the course and they cheer for you, which is really nice!!

I got splits in the big open meadow that I was 10 seconds behind 3rd with 3k to go. Either that person was totally wrong, or I had a strong last 3k/the other gals faded.
12 PM

XC skiing warm up/down 25:00 [3]

Two laps minus S curves of the course. First one real slow with Nance and Ruth, but Ruth and I scampered onto some crust to get out of a racer's way (men's race on at the time) and we both fell through, and then fell, and Ruth really got her face on the crust, no good!
Second lap, skied a bit more continuously on my own.

And finally, post-talk, and after meeting with a handful of undergrads in their new physics-underground-lair (serious!), had a few minutes for abs before dinner with the selection committee.

Now really done, whoop!

How did interview go? I think ok. I think they are worried that I'm so young and don't have tons of experience. But I think my talk was understandable by people outside of the field, hopefully demonstrating I have some capacity to teach and had quite good chats with all of the astronomers, and a fair few physicists. Will know sometime in March.

Bah, not happy yet at all with my talk for my job interview on Friday. A run-through with my group at UMass happened, but it's just not that good. Needs to be big-picture motivated. Full steam again on it tomorrow.

Oh yeah, I did a few minutes of hamstring exercises on the swiss ball and push-ups: 16-15-14- almost to the level (18) where I wouldn't fail the air force test.

Joggeroo while the laundry was washing. Laundromat is possibly the least romantic place to be on Valentine's Day...
