Bah! Hamstring started painfully twinging with every stride somewhere right after 9. I tried to stretch it out and keep going once, but the pain returned after only about 1 minute. So I quit. Boo.
So the part of the race I did do:
14, I mean 1- Mistake out of the start- tried to go to the GO control, whoops! Realized before I entered the woods, but at least a minute mistake.
2- Fine, little unsure about stone wall on way in.
4- Over top, didn't really register light yellow on way in, but stone wall+ reentrant were enough.
5- Straighter than necessary?
6- Went right by. In a little low vis area. Maybe better attacking from yellow.
7- Racing Jeff Schapiro, he beat me. I got a bit distracted from my plan, had to consider what swamp I was in.
8- Slightly worried by first boulder, turns out it is on the map, just directly under control circle.
9- Nervous heading to back side of spur, but boulder was basically right where I wanted it.
And, possibly exciting, this morning I realized I'd orienteered here before- one of the 3 times I orienteered as a teenager. I was organizing my maps and found an orange course of Beech Hill. And apparently the area hasn't been used since?

Warm up. Right heel unhappy about being in o-shoe again. Tied the shoe looser and it complained less.

Slightly more than second half of Billygoat 2010 course @ Mt. Tom. Quickroute.
Orienteering went well, stayed pretty focused, and almost always had routes to the next control planned before I punched. A few I had to have an extra look around to make sure I was in the right place, but looking at GPS track, looks alright.
However, at one point, almost tripped, caught myself, but doing that put a lot of stress through the bad knee and now it hurts again. Grrrrrr!!! Is particularly a bummer, because I was planning on trying both the Ross and Boris finish routes (GO control was split) to see which I would have been faster on. Oh well, some other time!

Gorgeous! Sun, blue skies, crunchy leaves. Out and back on trails to Atkins, just by my lonesome.
Hamstring had no complaints until 4.5 miles, but then twinged a few times as I sped up... it's definitely better than it was, but still doesn't like fast that much. IT band a bit off at beginning, but not bad ever. Knee fine at least!

Drills back near the gym. Trying to make sure all running muscles are a-ok, given the left leg wierdness.
Gave a lecture on "Current mysteries in extragalactic star formation" at my highschool, up in Concord, NH last night, then also got to go observing- saw 4 shooting stars, a number of open clusters and a globular cluster. Quite cool, haven't used a telescope in a while.
On the course Alex planned, but only part of it. I was trying to focus on accurate bearings/developing a sense of direction. Due to printer issues, I had a black-and-white map, which was actually ok. I could see the line and some stuff, but not enough to get distracted picking other features off.
Tried 1 twice, pretty much dead on second time.
Good to 2, almost got distracted by another cliff, but realized it was far too off my line
Skipped 3, went to 4 reading terrain, to mix it up, and because there was a lovely reentrant leading me there. I messed up at the end though, because missed seeing a contour.
5- right on.

Run back mostly along trails, went through the hilly gap and did a hill repeat up it for fun (2.55). I raced back after that, to try to not be too late for 8.30, which I thought was when Alex needed to be going for her 9 o'clock class. Turns out I had it all wrong, could have stayed out longer!

An early o'clock ski with long lost training partner Alex!
We drove out a bit further to the nice pavement, and did 25 min no poles, 20 min double pole, plus two double pole pick ups right at the end. Despite all the coming back from elbow tendonitis, Alex is right with me double poling, for sure, maybe faster given the skis...
Also discovered more bad pavement on the far side of the two hills with good pavement, which is unfortunate, but those two hills are really nice, so can't complain too much!

Easy little noon run in the miserable. With Sergio, Sanjay, Sarah and Paul. Nice to catch up a bit, don't think I've run with them in 3 weeks! Did Puffers, but Garmin didn't get enough satellites til part of the way in, unfortunately. Heart rate got high on both hills, the guys like running them quick, especially Paul who has some inbuilt king-of-the-mountain impulse. Also mentioned upcoming O opportunities in Amherst area, some folks might show up for score-O at Norwottuck!
Legs tiredish after the weekend, especially calves. They haven't been sore in ages, curious, maybe because of rockiness, they had to do more work adjusting.
