Running 11:57 [1]

Run in to work. Cold, but not for running, got too hot actually!
4 PM

Running long 1:35:45 [2]

Beautiful run on backish roads mostly and as the sunset. Awesome. Only bummer was that I wasn't on skis...

Out 63 to Juggler's Meadow then Teadaddle Hill to Cemetary Rd. then down to Atkins Reservoir and out back to normal roads. Lotsa fun, for a road run. I really, really, really wanted to go for a trail run today, and almost went over to Amethyst Brook, but I'm still supposed to be babying the ankle...

Strength 20:00 [1]

Looks like I probably won't be skiing this week, so some more strength work at the gym so I maintain some strength for poling in the ski races this weekend!

Crosstrainer (swingy-jogger) 15:00 [1]

So, slept 4h on the LAX->Atlanta flight and another 1h Atlanta->Hartford, then attempted to have a normal day here in Amherst!

At the EDGE (a gym) for the first time. Good machines, enough space, and best of all, there's a SAUNA! I have missed saunas soooo much and there's one about 600m from my apartment. Awesome.

Running (part treadmill) 36:00 intensity: (18:30 @1) + (15:00 @4) + (2:30 @5)

3 min jog to and from gym, some easy stuff on treadmill (warm up, recoveries)

15 min tempo on the treadmill at 6.11 min per mile = (9.7 mph), ramped it faster for the last few minutes. That was at 0%. Felt good, in control although it wasn't exactly pleasant...

Then also did a 'hill' interval at 13% and 5 or so mph = hard!!!! Was going to do 5 min, but my muscles all started cramping. Either I have lots of hill strength (entirely possible) or am dehydrated/tired from travel. Or both.

Left IT band irritated right along the side of the knee. Maybe how I slept in the plane? This has also been bugging me with the Cage workouts, may need to stop those...

Rowing (erg) 5:00 [1]

5 min on the erg at the end, easyish @ 2.13 or so

Strength 2:30 [1]

Tidge of strength- triceps, shoulders, abs.

Swimming 32:30 [2]

Wooo!! Outdoor swimming in January! The conference organzier overheard me complaining that the conference was getting in the way of my plans to swim at the hotel pool which was only open 9am-dusk (= conference time). So she let me into the Caltech pool during lunch break. Awesome!

It was warm, there were palm trees around and I had a lane to myself. Too bad I didn't have goggles and swimcap. The water wasn't too stingy though at least!

Wasn't strong or anything, but remember a bunch from swimming last year for the triathlon. Was still natural to flip turn at least!

Running 46:26 [3]

Pre-conference run with Julia around the neighborhood. So great to run with similar-speed woman!

Story: I noticed this other woman had a heart rate monitor on at the conference. So I decided to become her friend; I introduced myself, asked some questions. Turns out she was a nearly-pro triathlete who can run a 17.40 5k. Awesome! Really cool to chat and get to run with her!

Busy times in Pasadena, but managed to squeeze in 10 min abs + 1 min back + 1 min dips before the conference dinner!

Running 38:51 intensity: (28:51 @2) + (10:00 @3)

Jog around in sunny Pasadena! Crazy to be out in shorts and T-shirt here after ski racing last weekend! Everything is so colorful, with oranges on trees and flours and cars not covered in layers of grime....

Did a few easy pickups. Not amazing for running with all the streets and cars, but not too terrible either.
