Cycling 30:00 [0]

Very low-key cycling around Mishima- saw Mishima shrine and a park with springs bubbling up from underneath the most recent lava flow from Mt. Fuji (it last erupted about 300 years ago). I don't think my heart rate even got to Level 1, so it's down as Level 0. It just made my legs move a bit! A good recovery day. I've been running a lot- coming from cross-country skiing, I'm not used to that much straight running!

Orienteering 1:30:00 [3] ***

Orienteering at the base of Mt. Fuji! I ran on the W21E course for the upcoming Golden Days 4 day event being held there this weekend, so I can't really talk about the course... There were controls already out on the first half, so I pretty much raced that, and made one big mistake that I was lucky to recover quickly from. The second half was trickier without controls, but it forced me to really notice everything. I actually didn't get to finish the course due to some impressive thunder and lightning!

Running 10:00 [1]

Back to the car.

Last time up the mountain- gorgeous day, I could see Mt. Fuji from the top.

Strength (Core) 14:00 [2]

Running warm up/down 45:00 [1]

Up to the 'track' (aka. parking lot), some warm-up drills, the recovery in between intervals, and back down.

Running intervals ((Track)) 20:00 [5]

3, 5, 3, 5, 3 -all in minutes, all in laps around my 'track'. 5 minutes was just under 4 laps of the parking lot. Felt good, but it is hard to work speed up at this altitude, my breathing got so hard before my muscles really felt it. Did two quick 30 second pieces at the end for some real speed. (Also in the slightly downhill direction of the parking lot!)

Running 1:00:00 [2]

Up the mountain and to the peak just behind it. Lots of fog, doesn't look good for observing tonight! I was going to do intervals, but am still sore from orienteering on Monday, so I'll wait til tomorrow. I want it to be a high-quality session!

Running (Fast Steady) 56:00 [3]

Not quite sure why I ran at Level 3 today. I was feeling good enough to, and just cruised, but I think I should be going a bit slower for a steady that was meant as more of a recovery after so many hours of training yesterday.

Strength (Core) 11:00 [2]

Abs, back, side, pushups.

Running warm up/down (Transportation) 50:00 [1]

Running to the train, back to the train, back to Nobeyama... generally my mode of transport for the day, in addition to the train.

Orienteering 2:30:00 [2]

Finally got out orienteering in Japan!!

I mostly ran on one map of Fujimidai that had a course on it, so I did the controls 7-14 (6k) and then 7-2(4.75k) (my stuff was near 7 and I needed a break for lunch!) as two sets. I found it very difficult, but for sure a good challenge to my orienteering skills!

The terrain was a wooded hillside with lots of parallel valleys running down it, and a fair number of paths and single-track dirt roads. The woods was runnable in places, but very thick in others- I'd describe it as swimable, as in you have to make breastroke motions with your arms in order to get through the stuff. The age of the map meant the swimable sections weren't marked correctly (timber harvesting means the woods had changed lots quickly), so I went through far more of them than I would have liked- good swimming practice!

The legs on Fujimidai were all of the order of 1k, so I made up a course of short legs on the other map I had, of the neighboring area. I gave myself 30 minutes to do as many as possible before I left to go catch the train. I got to 7, which is far fewer than I hoped, but I had some very difficult woods to go through. I did pretty well getting to the control sites, except one, which I think I was actually in the wrong reentrant now that I look at my map. Whoops.

A good day of training! I'm exhausted.
