Super-elliptical! Read a paper on the trigometric parallax to Cygnus X-1 that my thesis student and I were to meet to discuss at lunch. Reading on the elliptical is actually pretty easy, should do more of this!

Treadmill at 6% grade and 15 min/mi. Because the stairmill had some sort of error.

Frenemy had the super-ellitpical, so I just got the normal one, but more than that, someone else was actually using the stairmill, so I just did the full 30 min on the elliptical. Meant 4 hikes instead of just 3.

Last two Yosemite hikes, first Sierra Nevada. Shorter ones, so only 21 minutes fro the 3 this time. On the normal elliptical because elliptical frenemy was on the super one.

Shorter elliptical, so longer on the stairmill. 68 spm.

And school starts! Orientation officially begins today. I have just a few responsibilities - on a panel of junior faculty today and then Thursday morning have one of my colleague's advisees since he had to be out of town. So baby is allowed to come anytime she wants after Thursday, really.

But also trying to finish up on radio telescope install. If only it's motors would behave....

Traveled down to Salem, OR to visit with friends and be there for the eclipse. Traffic was no problem, despite warnings and we had a nice afternoon walking around Salem.

Pilates. More matwork, so less I could really do. Last session I'll make it to - next week is off and it's not worth me buying a pass for the fall to possibly make it to one or two final sessions...

Whoa!!! It rained in Portland!! It's been two months? Two and a half? Not sure, but a looooong time.

So the rain was refreshing. And I'm sure my plants are happy. Maybe the grass will think about turning green again.

Anyways, we headed out for the intended hike anyways, a loop around the Larch Mountain crater. Normally it probably has awesome views from a few places, including the hard-to-weather core of the volcano, Sherrard Point. But today, visibility was maybe 50ft, so no views.

Whoa! There were maybe 8 other people in the cardio room when I arrived this morning. Norm has been 1-3, so definitely a shift. Maybe the kids are coming back... they kind of trickle in, first the Hall advisors who have training, then international students, then all first-years then everybody.

Normal elliptical, elliptical nemesis totally beat me in today. Did the first 3 New Zealand hikes.

Really good Pilates session. I could do almost all the exercises, lots of leg work esp at the beginning and then some side-lying, which I can actually do. And bridging, which also works.

Hiking with Chelsea Little (of Faster Skier writing + currently Ecology PhD in Zurich + Dartmouth ski team '10) who was visiting for two days before the big Ecology conference in Portland. But, she sprained an ankle recently so we chose a quite tame hike to Wahclella Falls. Totally a waterfall worth seeing, and the trail dead-ends at it (because wall), so nice to do when less mobile. Perhaps will be an early one to bring the baby hiking.

Totally fun. I do like the challenge of Trail-o, it turns out. Requires fun map skills. But, the group was going at a super-slow pace, which was fine, but meant Tom and I had to take off before finishing all 10 controls to get to birth class at the hospital.

Morning super-elliptical. Finished the hike cycle again, so back to the beginning for some in the Southwest US: Bryce and Zion.

The air quality really is bad - fire smoke has blown in from British Columbia and it's smoky/hazy. My throat was sore just at the end of this mini-workout.

Was supposed to go to prenatal yoga after, but totally forgot it started at 10 and not 10:30. Since it was 10am and I was still in my office, I skipped.

Going to the dentist at 7am stole the morning workout slot, boo. And it's roasting today and neither the gym at Reed nor my office has AC, so will probably go home early... Today will break the Aug. 2 high temp record, but probably not the all-time Portland hottest temp of 107.

Apparently our gym roof nearly collapsed a few weeks ago. Initial report of one out of 5 trusses over the pool breaking, now referred to as 'catastrophic' failure. So probably no pool at Reed until next summer.
