Bummer! I totally mistook the start time for this race and we arrived and tried to pick up registration packets 30 min after it had started!!!!

Honestly, I pretty much started to cry. Which sounds silly and whatever, but I like racing and I don't like making mistakes and so on 2 accounts things were going badly.

The race organizer said it was fine if I went out, just the aid stations might be disappearing and to not wear my number. So after a walk to the car, putting on my orienteering shoes with metal studs (oh yeah, it had been crazy thunderstorm/pouring since 5am - not your standard monsoon) I headed out for my own little time trial.

And glad I did. It was a true cross country course, with gullies being made at that moment as water did its work and several real single track sections (all after 2 miles, so people who started on time would have time to sort out), some with downed trees to scamper over. O-shoes were totally the right footwear (ok, maybe xc spikes would have done too), enjoyed having their grip.

Started passing people at 3.5 miles and continued doing so until the finish. Think I confused some, but I think I should have actually kept my number on, felt like a bandit and got a few stares when I didn't cross the finish line. I paid for it, so given I wasn't enormously late, should have just kept my number on. (Argument against is that the race organizer had no way of knowing I would have been fast enough to not keep the aid station workers out late, which it's true, I didn't pay for that service.)

Anyways, did have a great time out despite everything! Came back *covered* in mud, and a smile. =)

Tom's first run after surgery #2. It was much more mild than his last surgery, he's really fine now, just some swelling around the wound and will need stitches to come out in another 9 days.

Ended at Kickstand for a cappuccino/mocha - holy moly it was busy right before highschool starts! On the way back, we heard the day-start announcements from the highschool.

Morning hill-tervals. 4 x up the FUTS Mars Hill. Slower times than a few weeks ago, but have done a bunch of training in the past few days. And - actually got through the workout - didn't have my quads cramp up. Woo!

Yay new birthday bike Garmin's first trip! Up SnowBowl road. Barely any other cyclists, just a tandem that was close to the top as I was headed down.

Running 1:22:53 [2] 9.84 mi (8:25 / mi) +174m 7:59 / mi

Longish morning run in some last-minute prep for next weekend's 15k! Didn't quite stay on Elden Lookout Rd. long enough to start out on the right trail. Some bushwacking, but did find my way to Buffalo Park in the end, and GPS track doesn't even look that bad!

Took Tom in for wrist-plate-removal surgery afterwards.

Cycling 1:18:49 [1] 16.1 mi (4:54 / mi) +300m 4:38 / mi

Mountain bike ride around Observatory Mesa. Took out the map twice in order to keep track of my route. Suppose not enough to count as MBTO. =)

Cows, some timber harvesting, many RVs, a few tents, dude with a gun and one chase-happy yappy dog who got a stern "Stay!". In short, a very multi-use forrest.

Running 1:10:40 [2] 5.25 mi (13:28 / mi) +696m 9:32 / mi

Birthday run up Elden! Beautiful! Went up from the trailhead for the Oldham trail off of Elden Lookout Rd. It's almost like running in the woods out east- in tree cover pretty much the whole way up, such a difference from the east side of Elden which has cacti and junipers and you bake in the sun the whole time...

Tom biked up the road - a tough one after not much time on the bike with the broken wrist. Unfortunately, he has one last batch of surgery on Monday and it's probably his last time on the bike for awhile.
11 AM

Running 1:07:19 [2] 6.29 mi (10:42 / mi) +192m 9:46 / mi

Down via Sunset-Brookbank trails. Clouded over and thundered right toward the end, but no rain. Monsoon kinda petered out for the day.

Such a lovely run!

Whew, made it back to Flag at 2am Pacific, 5am Eastern. Long day of travel!

Just a morning joggeroo around town, ending at the bagel shop because we have no food in the house.

Hiking 1:55:00 [1] 3.79 mi (30:21 / mi) +969m 16:55 / mi

Yayayyayay!

Stephi's wedding happened! Was a bit of a whirlwind being all dressed up and getting her even more dressed up and trying to make the call of whether the ceremony should happen outside or in (rain) and then playing DJ and yeah... whew!

And, then after clearing up, Tom and I nabbed a ride from a nice Lodge Crew member (Tucker, '16, Mechanical Engineering) to the Beaver Brook Trailhead. For those of you unacquainted with the Beaver Brook trail, it's something special. You basically go up, steeply, along a waterfall for 1.5 miles. Steps and handrails and everything. It's awesome. And with the rain from the weekend, the waterfalls were awesome too.

Summited a cloudy Moosilauke from Ridge Trail, then went down Carriage and Snapper. So nice to get out on these trails and get to show them to Tom!

Off-road duathlon @ Flagstaff Athletic Club

Whoa there mis-measurement of a 5k run! Actually ~4.4 miles, which is *much* longer. Definitely made it a harder event!

Duathletes started 3 min back to the triathletes, I overtook nearly all the triathletes on the run, just two guys, an NAU prof and the head of the hospital here stayed ahead. And that's pretty much the order is stayed...

Mountain bike was fun - a wee bit of easy double-track (so sometimes hard to skip from one to the other) at the beginning, which was also more technical because runners were coming at you. Then an easy dirt road for ~ 2 miles, then it turned gnarly and was fun, but with a wide road you could usually fine a smooth line.

Nearly everyone was doing the triathlon, only 4 duathletes I think, and it would have been soooo much more enjoyable to jump in the pool for a 300m swim that back out in the heat and sun for another 4.4 mile run. But so I did. Pretty dehydrated by the end. Had one gu on the bike, one water bottle and then stopped for water both times on the final run.

Made it back to Flagstaff! It is soo green here - monsoon season is doing it's work!

Not that this will do much good after 3 weeks of not biking, but hopped on the bike for a little whirl before tomorrow's duathalon. Nice to be 'home', even if only for 4 days after the last 3 weeks of travel!

Threw myself out of bed, into running clothes and out the door. Ran past the freight port where 4 refrigerated grocery-store trucks presumably contained the days worth of fresh groceries for the island.

Running long 2:00:38 [1] 11.72 mi (10:18 / mi) +757m 8:34 / mi

Went ziplining first thing in the morning, so my long run ended up being midday in the baking sun. Ran up to the ridge again and then way around on East End Rd. Very few people, most at the top of the trail from the Botanic Garden.

Then more conference!

Running 41:08 [1] 3.97 mi (10:22 / mi) +81m 9:45 / mi

Woo, survived first conference day, including giving my invited talk on Secular Evolution. What in the world might that be? Astronomers use the word secular to mean 'slow and steady' - so ways that galaxies evolve that take a significant time (so in our books, a significant portion of the age of the Universe).

Anyways, after meeting, went out for an evening run. The trail I wanted to take was closed off because it goes through the botanic garden (what type of botanic garden to you have on a desert island?) so found another one and ran up it. Very pretty views, only one couple hiking down.
