Running 20:00 [1]

Eeeep! Quick little run before graduating!

Friday Jul 30, 2010 #

Running 31:00 [1]

Realized at 8.05 am that the only way to get a run in was to try to do it then, before conference start at 9am. So ran for 31 min, showered, dressed, and then ran again to the conference.

Just around Uni Parks, a few 30 sec strides.

Running hills 1:30:00 intensity: (1:14:00 @1) + (16:00 @4)

Hills up at Shotover, 4 x 4 min. Felt ok, but not very strong, nice to get out for a longer run though- afternoon off from conferencing!

Running warm up/down 20:00 [1]

Warm up along bike path, wanted to go to Mesopotamia, but too early so was still closed... as was the Parks actually.

Orienteering 20:00 [4]

Shorter city race course, tried to really race it, missed some bits in colleges, and had to start from control 2 as parks were closed at beginning.

Monday Jul 26, 2010 #

Strength 45:00 [1]

OUOC circuits! Ian's last one, plus the parents, LarryC and NanC joined, although mom didn't do much due to jet lag etc.... Nice time in Eagle and Child afterwards!

Sunday Jul 25, 2010 #

Running long 1:40:33 [2]

Out to Whytham, long one! Sooo dehydtrated when I got back. Lovely to head out there, and lots along the Thames too. Woo Oxford runs!

Orienteering 1:05:41 [1]

A slowish run around the City Race course 1 (thanks Ian!) from a few years ago. Had a tight hamstring, which loosened with time, but also had tons and tons of tourists to deal with, does serve me right for going out midday on a summer weekend, I suppose! =) Only had to skip a handful of controls because in colleges.

Friday Jul 23, 2010 #

5 PM

Running 50:00 [1]

Still quite tired after not enough sleep, out through Mesopotamia, then up through Headington and back.

Thursday Jul 22, 2010 #

Running 57:30 intensity: (50:00 @1) + (7:30 @5)

And proposal done! Only 3h sleep though.... so didn't feel super out doing hills in South Parks, but it's also barely a hill, really! =)

Wednesday Jul 21, 2010 #

Running 45:53 [1]

Run around Port Meadow, 2 x Nature reserve. Dry, sunny day. No muddy shoes afterwards! Amazing! Litttle break in a crazy proposal-writing day- 9am until 4am, ug.

Monday Jul 19, 2010 #

Running warm up/down 18:00 [1]

Little jog around Uni Parks. Right calf now feels tons better, left one still hurts really bad. Another day to cure it? Hope that's just it.

Uni Parks, and everywhere else actually, are incredibly dry. Drought in England! Who would have thought it possible?

Strength (circuits) 35:00 [1]

Pretty chill OUOC circuits session, I wasn't too energetic with the painful calf. But did do numbers! =) Haven't been doing circuits, we'll see how I feel tomorrow!

Sunday Jul 18, 2010 #

Running 55:41 [2]

And back in Oxford! Met up with Rich for a run around the canals, calves are still really really sore, but more ok after 15 min of warming up? Hope they feel actually better tomorrow...

Saturday Jul 17, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Woke up with super-sore calves- it's bizarre, just the top bit right below the knee, must be from the really steep hill stuff yesterday somehow. Was about time to take a day off anyways.

So after my last breakfast up at the castle, went sightseeing in Munich all day. Pretty cool, energetic city today for sure! Currently stuck in the airport, because my plane was hit by lightning when it landed here in Munich.... will be a very late night now, as it's delayed 2h.

5 PM

Running hills 44:00 intensity: (35:00 @1) + (9:00 @5)

Ran a bit below the castle to warm up, then did 6 x 1 min and 6 x 30 sec hill up the really really steep road up to the telecoms tower. Ouchie! A nice dip in the pool at the end again. Am going to miss that!

Thursday Jul 15, 2010 #

Running 40:00 [3]

Down the castle road to the river road after conference day. Easy run after yesterdays long one! Humid.

Strength 9:00 [1]

Running 2:00:00 [2]

Woooooooo!! Amazing hike-run in the Alps! Started somewhere named Eng, in Austria, and took off up into the mountains. Ran first up up up to Falkenhutte, where I filled up my waterbottle and payed for a candy bar (1 euro) with a 50 euro note, right....

Then took a tiny trail down to another clump of huts, where I couldn't find the next trail. So orienteered myself accross a hill side, finally intersecting the trail I meant to be on. Was a bit steep for orienteering. Then up through a gap between two mountains on a very tiny trail- this one definitely wasn't used much at all, I even lost it somewhere near the top, but it didn't matter because it was just alpine meadow. Then down and around the mountain, appreciating amazingly gorgeous views all over the place.

The rest of the project team went on a hike up the other side to a hut, and mostly drank beer, although some went a bit higher too!

Hiking 1:15:00 [1]

Some of it counts as hiking instead!

Tuesday Jul 13, 2010 #

Running 55:00 [2]

Morning run. Started off down the hill and was quickly caught by another astronomer! What?!?! Danny Dale on our team also runs, so we ran together down the hill and he showed me the trail along the river, which was really nice. He turned around a bit earlier, which was kind of nice, then we didn't have to try to maintain the pretense of talking while battling our individual ways back up the hill to the castle.

Running hills 33:00 intensity: (17:00 @2) + (16:00 @4)

Flew out when we were released from meeting, changed and ran downhill to the main road. Then turned around and did 4 x 4 min hill intervals on the way back up, jumped in the pool for a bit and changed for dinner. Whew, run just sneaked in!

Sunday Jul 11, 2010 #

Running 41:00 intensity: (31:00 @1) + (10:00 @3)

And now in a castle in Bavaria, seem to be on a castle tour here in Europe... This one is owned by the Max Planck Institute and is used for conferences like this all the time. It's pretty cool.

Am going to get strong in hills here, I think! There are only two ways to go from the castle- up and down. Went up today, to the top where there is a telephone mast, did some plyometric ankle/ski drills whenever there was a flat spot (infrequent!), some *very* steep sections!

The swimming pool was great afterwards, since it was way hot, but it was just filled with mountain spring water yesterday, so a bit on the chilly side even, but bet a few more days of this sunshine will make it lovely!

Saturday Jul 10, 2010 #

Running 54:20 intensity: (43:50 @1) + (10:30 @5)

And woke up at the hostel in the old city, was not even the first out of my 8 bed room out the door! Went for a run around the old city, then some hill intervals up to the Heidelberg Castle- I think it was 'recently' destroyed as in WWII or something, it has obviously not been in ruin too long, but it is for sure destroyed- there's an impressively large turet that cracked in two and half is sinking into the ground. Like you would expect in some disaster special effects film, except the ground stopped it half way and it's just sitting there...

Headed down from the castle on a little cobble-stoned road and when I turned around to do some 30second intervals up hill, was told to go 'schnell, schell' by some kids, which I understood, but on the way down one asked, 'why do you go so fast?' which I could just about make out in german, but there is no way I could come up with a reply...

Then across the old bridge and up on the cool little winding path that shortcuts to the Philosophenweq and then down on the Philosophenweg to Neuenheim.

3 x 3 min + 3 x 30 sec hill intervals

Note

Travel to Heidelberg.

Fantastically poor job of getting from plane in Frankfurt to Heidelberg. First, I missed my scheduled train because they closed this huge area of the airport (bomb threat? exercise? thief? I have no clue!) and no one could get out to the train station. Then I choose the slowest possible trains possible at each junction, basically I was on an S-bahn the entire way from Frankfurt to Heidelberg. Oh well. Got here!

Running 1:08:41 [1]

Good morning run around Virginia Water with Christof and another astronomer Helen. It was right on the border of how long/fast Helen could take, but she didn't get cranky or give up or anything, which is pretty cool. Amazing to come back to hot cooked English breakfast! Bacon, eggs, toast, mushrooms, tomatoes. No beans for the toast though, slight disappointment.

One conference down, 4 more meetings/conferences to go!
6 PM

Field Sports (Frisbee) 20:00 [1]

Astro-frisbee! A good little crowd between 8-10 for ultimate in the Uni Parks. Good fun, and I didn't twist an ankle.

Wednesday Jul 7, 2010 #

Running 56:00 intensity: (40:00 @1) + (16:00 @3)

Ran to Windsor Castle and back! =) Amazing.

Ran past the Copper Horse (something about Rex George in latin), then all the way down the Long Walk up to the castle until you weren't allowed to go anymore. Did 4x4 min threshold intervals, moved legs quick, but not too hard. Tried to do hopscotch ankle drills a few times too. Did stop to take a few photos, I mean it's a castle! =)

Tuesday Jul 6, 2010 #

Running 38:00 intensity: (35:00 @1) + (3:00 @5)

Run towards Windsor Castle with Barbara and Christof (2 other astronomers). Not super quick, but nice to have company for sure. We made it to the second to last gate, but then had to turn around to get back in time for dinner. Mostly chatted about climbing there and back as they are both keen climbers- Barbara is working on her first 5.12a (sport), which is pretty impressive in my book!

Did two little hill intervals up to the Copper Horse on the way back.

Monday Jul 5, 2010 #

Running 33:00 [1]

Little post-flight run around Windsor Great Park (which contains the castle). Pretty sweet. Although legs were not too happy- I tried to do some ankle-plyometrics but my bum cramped. May not have hydrated enough on the plane!!!!

Strength 11:00 [1]

10 min abs + 1 min back, while listening to The Moth podcast- a story of an unlikely adventure to the all star game immediately after the baseball strike some number of decades ago...

Note

Now flying to London, probably no training today, unless I decide to do some situps in either Salt Lake or JFK airports... but, just wanted to say, NAOCs was such a blast, I'm so glad I was convinced to go. Great terrain, great courses, and fun people everywhere!

This Bjorn Kjellstrom Cup competition is a neat aspect too, friendly, but gives you more team aspect than normal in orienteering. Thinking so many good luck thoughts for the US runners in the sprint today!!

Running warm up/down 6:00 [1]

Partly on the warmup map, partly just on trail, so logged as running. Becoming sunny, woo! Legs didn't feel too tired from yesterday.

Orienteering race 1:09:51 [4] 9.3 km (7:31 / km) +350m 6:19 / km

Another good one! Super psyched. 2nd place to Louise, just 38 seconds back. Sam just a minute or so behind- awesome to have such a close race between the 3 of us, lead definitely switched and each one of us won several legs!

Not very happy with the first 3, but got into a pretty good groove after those. For things I really had to consider a route choice, I did just take a chill pill, like Sandra suggested, made a plan, then ran. The two long legs went ok, but I lost about a minute to both Sam and Louise to 13- maybe this was just hesitation along the way? I don't see an obviously different better route...

I was really happy I dealt well with the 3 detailed controls in the cliffs right before the spectator- definitely required a change of pace in orienteering speed. Then was a bit off on my bearing to the spectator, which is always embarrassing, but whatever, then scared on the hill control right after. After that, basically running in!
12 PM

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]

Running back to the car to take off and try to make it back to Spokane before they charged me with an extra day's car rental- made it with 10 min to spare! Woo!

Friday Jul 2, 2010 #

Orienteering warm up/down 12:00 [1]

Good warm up on the warm-up map, unhappy about indistinctness of yellow in places, but hey, that's a good thing to notice before the start!

Orienteering race 36:15 [4] 4.2 km (8:38 / km) +190m 7:02 / km

NAOC Middle

Woo! Got 3rd to Louise and Sandra!

Went steady through the more detailed controls at the beginning, staying in really good contact with the map. I think the ability to go faster through such detailed terrain will come with just more practice.

Then went pretty well through the easier controls on the second half, except for 12 where I overran after my attackpoint didn't materialize... at least I did stop not to long after when the hillside below me was totally featureless, then backtracked and found control.

All in all though, very happy! So much fun too! =)

Running warm up/down 6:00 [1]

Little warm down jog with Sandra after the race in the warm-up area.

Orienteering 20:00 [1]

NAOC Model

So Kseniya and I got in last night at what we thought was 10pm, but the time zone changed at some point from Spokane and was actually an hour later. We were running an hour late without knowing it all morning until we get to the model and they say last bus down at noon. Ok, so I have 1.5h, nope, they say, only 1/2 hour. Right.

So a quick foray into the model terrain, starting to get a feel for the mapping. Very nice to have this opportunity actually. Noted the vagueness of vegetation, what exactly light green meant. Those were probably the most important things.

Orienteering race 38:24 [3]

NAOC Thomass event

Nice day, fun event. I got to skip 2 controls, but one of my two was a bad choice and I had to go up a bigger hill than necessary, oh well! Only really made 1 mistake, on the sprint that followed, ran way past #2. Then had a good battle with a fast older Norweigan woman for the rest of the way in. I didn't really want to push it, because I wanted fresh legs for tomorrow, but also hard not to be competitive... ended up beating her in just the final sprint. I wore just my running shoes which were not so ideal on the downhills.
