Conference -> hotel -> Jardin du Luxembourg

Strength 6:00 [2]

Ankle plyo drills, while listening to an orchestra in the Jardin du Luxembourg on a sunny gorgeous day. Life is good.

Running 6:00 [3]

Mm, only way to get a run in was to run in the flip flops back to hotel during lunch. Tomorrow should attempt to wake up and run in the morning! Was roasting again!

A try-not-to-let-the-legs-atrophy-while-at-conference run! Un peu partout, was kinda lost for a bit actually, wander wander. Hotel is right by the Cimitière de Montparnasse, peaked in, is fancy! Gave my one-minute poster whirl through my stuff today, guess it would be better if I had a real talk, but this makes the conference way lower stress... Oh, except for the telescope proposal due Thurs...

36 degrees in france, roasting! but got here a-ok and survived day 1 of conference doping on some serious coffee, jeez louise! time for french food mmmm

Ran around as others were in the next park over (Franklin) checking out thinks for US Champs Sprint in the fall. Pretty good, somethings tricky b/c no controls, and then the grass was crazy tough to get through, especially uphill!!!

Baldwin Hill Training

Not sure exactly what to call this type of training, but it's done in partners with one kite/streamer and you go each to different 1st controls, then go to the one the other partner just went too and then to a common 3rd control. You set your streamer at the first one and pick up your partner's at the second. Came from an exercise suggested by Eva J on o-training.net sometime in the fall, here. Boris gets major gold stars for planning it for us, super thanks to him!

Got there and Jordan and Minga were also there with Alex, and was decided the best speed pairings were me and Jordan and Minga and Alex. Alrighty, time to be faster =)

Was great training, definitely slower than Jordan, but good to be pushed and yet stay aware that I couldn't just run headless because it was far too technical for that. And you had to be careful when you set the flags!

4- Not great, stopped at earlier form liney spur first and took a bit to figure it out
13- Found a little depression too early and was wondering if it was the right one when Jordan came through
16- Not a great plan into the control, went high which was a good approach, but then very vague on approach, now see the formline is indicating a different shape then I was envisioning
31-32 Jordan and I both did baldly with these, neither actually flagged the right point... bad bad

Into the rain with the noonies for a track workout. Alejandro and Sergio already had conspired to suggest 400s, was fine by me. We decided to do 8, and Alejandro said he was aiming for just under 80. But then we started and he took off! And ran the first one in 66, jeez! He only ended up doing 6... =)

We ran them in lane 3, cause lanes 1+2 were pretty much underwater. Different perspective on the track, which was nice actually. I kept mine relatively steady, although stomach started being really unhappy at the third or so. Only the long recoveries let the cramps settle before the next... ug.

Ian's Mt. Tom Red Course

Rainy rainy day and a horrible start to the course. Opted for what I now think is the slower route to #1, trails but just too much extra climb. But then 2 was terrible! Knew where I was, knew where I was and then boom, nothing made sense and I couldn't put it back together. Went back to relocate, again went high of the dot knoll and even higher for reasons that escape me now, and figured out what cliff I was standing on and into the control.

Tried it again, because you at least have to try to learn from your mistakes, still went above the dot knoll, but at least in the right direction from the cliff above this time...

3 was all fine, but too high just at the end and I think the streamer fell down. Passed the right cliff once, thought it was right but doubted myself because no streamer, came up from bottom, same cliff. 4 was almost fine, again just didn't see streamer until I did an extra loop?

Things went smoother after that, really no issues, except I felt like I wasn't moving that quickly. Still not quickly and clean is faster than all over the frickin place like first 4...

Things to take away: don't get scared by all the extra unmapped rock. It's fine, it's allowed to be there and not on the map because it's tiny, relatively! Also, a few extra seconds to be 100% sure of features is worth it. Sometimes being only 80% sure makes the brain do extra loops of doubt and panic when things get a bit not matching slightly later on.

Met another girl emerging from her car at the same time as me, registration wasn't open yet, so went for a nice friendly warm up together.

Then ran into 2 faces from long ago- 1) David Whitcomb, dad of skiers I was good friends with as a kid, so looked up to the daughter, Kate who was a few years older and so cool and so fast compared to me! 2) Matt Fleischner, from those same ski days (there wasn't any skiing in Poughkeepsie, so my fam always traveled to W Mass to ski). He's now being a lawyer in Springfield. Cool!!

And tied 2 weeks ago, 2nd to a guy who pretty much took off from the start, no one else around. Think the improvements are going to be harder to come by now, although I was hoping switching to lighter shoes (the 212s) was going to help for a few seconds on this one. But I'm not sure they actually had that good traction on this course, there's so much loose stuff, it's as if the cleats just fall through the gravelly stuff, liked my normal trainers better I think...

Anyways, traded splits on the first 2 miles compared to last week, think that means I paced more sensibly since first mile is even and second one is downhill. Strange that this week I was only 13 minutes in L5 this week compared to 15.30 last week though, maybe more tired? I did do 2 sessions yesterday, 1 kinda hard...

Splits this week:

Warm down with Aaron Judge, a Civil Engineering PhD student who is apparently on the noon runners list, but doesn't come. Tried to convince him he should. He reported doing tons of intervals on a treadmill in the winter... did not sound like fun one bit.

Alex's sprint course from SuperStars weekend. Was really trying to push it, but maybe I just wasn't hyped up enough, because L3 is not going that hard... guess I'm more competitive in real races!

Everything went smoothly, was an extra fence in one place because of construction. Especially did much better in the woods than previously when I ran around with my head chopped off for a bit!

Really want to be better with doing ankle stuff- didn't do *any* last week, no good!

Note

First half of day- continuing reunionizing at a friends farm up at Dartmouth, so good to see all. Scrumptious breakfast + sunshine.

Then off to southern VT for another friends' wedding, the ceremony was in both Italian and English and the juxtaposition of the two families/friends was amazing- the glossy Italians in black and sparkles and the VT hippies in linen and button-downs (one guy had dreads nearly 3 ft long!) And much tango dancing into the night, some guys were patient enough to try to teach me. It's an amazing dance, very different than salsa, more dramatic, less set, partners must be more in tune...

One friend at reunions decided a 7am run around in the woods with a map was a good idea. =) He's just recently out of the marines and kept referring to o as "land nav" and being really confused by the 1:10 scale.

But I only printed up 1 map, so that meant we had to keep switching and I had no way to follow along when he was navigating. Led to much confusion, some attempts at relocation... Altogether kinda slow orienteering and not great training although good to catch up with Anthony and show him what this sport is about!

Haven't done Orchard Hills in ages- good workout! Went out with Alex after work, and brought maps of the relay at Frith Hill to look at while intervalling.

Times were 4.14, 4.18, 4.19, 4.18, so pretty consistent, bit fast on the first. Maybe a few seconds slower due to map reading at the same time? There were a set Dec 09 I did in 4.09, 4.10, 4.12 at least, can't be bothered to do a full search for all times I've done them... Stomach was complaining at the end, always seems to with these.

Other news, next observing run to Chile doesn't fall during WOC, phew! A weekend at end of Sept/beginning of Oct.

Haven't done a score-o in a long time, accidentally skipped 2 controls, whoops!! Still had time to go get one after going through the finish the first time, but the second was wayyy out.

Anyways, super fun to run fast, the woods are so easy to get through and so visible. Slight hesitation on one or two, worst was missing a trail branch off I wanted to take- was trying to read ahead + run fast.

Note
(rest day)

Totally totally off day, letting the body recover!

The 3 day version of the Badger Training Camp was awesome! Going over QuickRoute, the mistakes I made seem to be because I mistook one feature for another similar one and then didn't notice or start to get worried early enough afterwards... and then some other times deciding x was y and running towards it without a compass check.

Oh, and used my magnifier for the first time! None of the maps were 1:15, but sometimes helpful on the 1:10 ones, for really approaching into the control. For planning long legs though, definitely needed to swing it out of the way.

Was also cool just to visit Wisconsin, think it was my first time in the state? Learned about supper clubs and the kettle-moraine terrain and the bizarre (to me) road naming system involving letters only. There's also a new trail in the process of being built crossing the state marking the approximate edge of the glacier in the last Ice Age.

Also, saw lots of cool and sometimes evil plants/animals. First run in the woods, saw a teeny-tiny fawn and two loud, big sandhill cranes squawking in the open meadow. Then learned about wild parsnip, which apparently leaves oil on your skin that turns to acid and burns you if exposed to UV from the sun? Yikes! Prickly ash looked like a tree, but had surprise thorns, not cool. Then, on the last day, I nearly ran over a turkey's nest-- momma took off, abandoning the eggs, which I narrowly managed to avoid trampling. Wowzer.

Day 3 – 4.0k – 15 controls – Hepcat
Slalom-O
Woo, so this one was designed to keep crossing paths with another runner who you started at the same time as. Saw Andrew at a bunch of controls up to 9, but then got totally confused to 10, had decided to bail to trail when I ran into control. Right, so don't quite have orienteering in this terrain perfectly figured out....

ay 3 – Memory-O – 3.9k – 8 controls – Hepcat
Did memory-o to 2, 4, 6, 8 with Andrew running the odd ones, did ok, pretty much had routes memorized while he was navigating, and always managed to actually get to the controls, woo! Then he was a bit tired so went straight back from 8, I decided to keep going, and totally did not give 11 the respect it needed. It was just over the road, so it should have been easy, as you had a clear thing to attak from only 100m away. But despite coming out on the road where I wanted, ended up heading more south-west than south-east and became confused and did not relocate well at all. Maybe getting tired...

Day 3 – Cluster course – 3.6k – 12 controls – Cat's Meow
This course was designed to have a bunch of short legs and then a big one, mix it up. My goal was to try to run under 10 min/k, but nope, didn't quite get that, as is the theme of this weekend, I guess... Was really focused going in, still totally messed up 1. Decided to just start over. Had run too far on the trail.

After starting over, the short legs went pretty well. The first long one was a bit rough, totally had to relocate when I finally came up to the big ridge. Probably a better route would have been to remain right of the line, as Andrew pointed out later... 2nd long leg went ok, but then got way confsued into 11. Actually, I'm not sure it's hung in the right place, after a circle around, went to attack it from a green spur when all of the sudden it was infront of me, instead of off to the right... but it's possible I wasn't actually on that green spur. Visibility was about zero in that zone, and super lumpy ground. That mistake left the going under 10 min/k impossible, but not too far off. Ah well. Has been really good to get out on this terrain!!

Day 2 – 1.3k – 6, 6, 6 controls – Mauthe Lake

Sprint training, but gosh, I tried to be too speedy and messed up at least once on each loop. Gr. I guess it's good to know where the line of becoming stupid is, but really feel like some of the things were super-silly and I should have done better. Andrew and I started 20s different on Loops 1+2 and then started in opposite directions for Loop 3.

Loop 1- 1->2 fail, I guess mostly because the veg boundary was yellow on both sides, should have been green on one, but this confused me for far, far too long...
Loop 2- Probably my best loop, but messed up coming of the hilltop, I thought the clearing was the road and changed direction accordingly, bad.
Loop 3- Gosh. Things were tricky at the beginning, some growth has maybe changed how the field should be mapped, and a missing earth bank, I think. But the silly thing was just heading on the wrong trail from 17, totally the wrong direction, may have seen the 8 on the map and thought it was 18???

Day 2 – 3.9 k – 9 controls – Keillings Lakes
Wowzer, ok, not sure I have ever found thicker 'white' woods as it was between 4 and 5. Just couldn't get through stuff! Ah well, good to try to develop ninja skills for France. It was mostly just that the map is a bit old, so the veg is out-of-date, otherwise totally would have gone around! But happy with how I went around. Almost messed up 6, but had a 'you've gone too far' warning bell go off, which was very helpful.

Day 2 – 7.8k – 15 controls – Cat's Meow
And the Red course, or almost, from US Champs 2009. Only almost because it was an earlier edition that Kevin planned that was 0.2k longer. So amazing to have a course this long with so few non-contour features! I think I used a trail only once and no stone walls, cliffs, streams at all... awesome. Still took me way longer than people were running it in the fall, but there is a lot more undergrowth/leafy stuff at the moment, according to the locals.

So, I'm happy with the run, learned that high routes on ridges are good for long legs, really helped speed things up. Bit slow to 2, because wasn't always in perfect contact and wasn't trusting enough of coming out at the big ridge/seeing the big depressions on the way. Used the 1 rock on the map to 7, nice.

A first course before lunch to warm up and start getting out on the terrain. And yep, it's different. Really had to think about not all closed loops being hill tops, so much negative contour features. First four went ok if not confident, then totally blew 5. I have not been so lost in a looooong time. I'm still not sure exactly where I went, thought I definitely was certain places on the way through, but then were I was afterwards doesn't make sense... ended up coming out to the open yellow, wasn't even sure which corner of the yellow I was at... jeez!

Tunnel-o. Decided to go do the first loop counter-clockwise of Andrew, maybe we'd pass each other somewhere- we must have, but may have been opposite sides of the corridor. And he rocked it, finished way before me. I had a pretty tough time with this one. Definitely left the corridor. Maybe worst was up in a big open field, which is a bit silly, nothing really to make you go off-bearing. Guess it was a gap in the green mostly filled in with a big tree that messed the plan up there... Looking at it, not quite sure why it was so tough, guess my style was cramped a bit by the corridor, and maybe wasn't doing as good a job as picking up what was up and down with the smaller amount of info provided.

Memory-o! This was fun. There was a piece of map at each control with the way to the next that you had to memorize and then go out and do. Taking splits, it took me 1-1.5 minutes usually at each control to plan and remember the way to the next, that seems like a lot... Only one that didn't work was #2, may not have had the proper respect for how difficult it was yet, and came out on the right ridge, but too far west, and decided I was too far east instead.

Cemetery Hill Sprint post-thunderstorm coming through!

Goal was to try to push the pace. But, again, it was tricky!! So had to back off, no L5, only a bit of L4. Pretty smooth through first 5. Then 6, I had forever to read the map on the trail coming in and still didn't get it right, boo. Slightly flustered from that, so decided to green-bash to 7 instead of the nice trail route around...

From then on, ok, sometimes hesitant, infrequently confident enough to really run and go for it. But it's a woods sprint, so isn't super-duper easy or anything. Some probably not-best choices too - 15 went around on ride + trail but then through the woods to 17, which wasn't terrible, but likely trails would have been faster... and sped up a bit into the finish, could finally work a bit harder!

Awesome training, so many thanks to Phil, for making the course and putting out streamers!!!

Mt. Tom at almost early o'clock with Alex. First we did a without-compass exercise based on Score-O from last year or so. Went pretty well, had to correct 1 as I got close, was a bit too low. Headed out of 2 maybe a bit the wrong direction, realized and corrected. Met Alex at 4 and we had a bit of debate about which reentrant was which... the mosquitos won the debate I think.

Made friends with extra cliffs to 5, and then 6 was scary scary compass-less, a boulder across a hillside. My plan had been to try to stay flat from the cliff I knew I came around, but I seem to have headed too far over the top, figured it out and got the boulder. 7,8 were good, 9 had issues in the circle, dot knolls are tough things, I founds something too small at first, turns out.

Nobscot Red

Wow, so much more open and fun to run through than Baldwin Hill, really enjoyed it!

Goal was to run with a plan, so planning exits from controls and routes to the next one. This worked pretty well most of the way through, fell totally apart after about 12 though.

Smooth through the beginning, slight issues with 5 in circle, when slightly too far/low to cliff first. 6 was super scary, pit among other pits and rocks. Came in off the top two distinct pits, then think I went to the one mapped and circled, but no control, looked up and saw the control just a bit higher, maybe lucky...

Bizarrely off my bearing to 8. Started vaguely right, then I think what happened is I saw some rocks, that were big enough I decided they were mapped and that they must be the set on my line. So next stage in plan: head east and cross marsh. But I still had far downhill to go, so kinda enacted that plan but that did not leave me where I should be. Recovered ok, but not good.

Should have had a plan to 12 before just running and same with 13- totally didn't see the staying-high route, and was a muppet executing the route I did choose anyway (joged east on a trail while trying to head south?) At least realized and not punished horribly for being silly.

Nobscot Yellow

Tried to do this as sprint training, found it very technical for a Yellow, jeez louise!

Hesitation at the beginning, my sprint mindset wanted to be running on a sprint scale I think. Sounds like 6 was put on the wrong boulder, I went to the right one first then onto the second. Have no idea what the map/my track is doing at 8... should be on the hill top, and I think it was on a hill top, but I do remember thinking it took a bit long off the trail... Goofmuppet to the finish, again, like towards the end of the red, just didn't have a plan, so first hesitated, then decided to go straight through the green marsh and then crossing, just decided to bold down the trail instead of heading to the finish... must keep focus up at end!!!

Baldwin Hill, backwards Red 2010 A meet course

Gosh is it thick out there! Thick to get through, thick to see through, good training. Did 14->3 going around the course backwards, to make it a bit different than when I raced.

Mostly pretty well, still faked out by the big boulder at 14, thinking it was the lower one. Off bearing to 12, corrected well, but was going on little else other than the bearing for this leg, so should have been better about it.

Happy with 11-10-9-8-7, but looks like I didn't find the right boulder at 6. Darn it! Crossed marsh awkwardly, for some reason drawn from a bearing that would have not done any marsh to one that went straight through middle of light green marsh... 5-4 ok if timid at times, fine to 3.

I hate diagnol-across slope with only vague features to find point feature legs, so figured I should practice those! Designed a little slope-o course, and went out to play.

1 and 2. Hm. My track does not add up with the map fantastically. I did hit the split at the backside of the hill at 1, but maybe the hill is longer or something? Other parts of the track add up to where I thought I was... And 2, I either punched at a wrong (unmapped) boulder or the boulder is not where the map says it was. Prob was just unmapped, because remember it was small, but then not sure how I didn't run into the bigger one right along the line to next control... Weird.

3-4-5-6-7-8-9 all went really well, pleased! Noticing the things along the way when there was anything, otherwise being good about my bearing and pacecounting from last available feature. (Yeah, yeah, pacecounting isn't cool, whatever, let's me run with more confidence on bland stuff, I don't have a sense of distance otherwise.)

10 I did not like, right about to it, hit the boulder between the streams on the way in, but then the in-the-circle made no sense. There was a dot knoll type thing that had a streamer on it that seemed to be in the right place, and then a little further on, there was an actual boulder that I would have mapped. Unsure what was going on.

11 was fine again
