Note
(sick)

Have mono (= glandular fever). This explains past 10 days of fever and headaches and general wimpyness.

Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

So at the very least will miss West Point this weekend, but hoping to recover quickly.... not quite sure how much hope to have?

Saturday Apr 24, 2010 #

Cycling 2:00:00 [1]

Cycling around Minneapolis with Dan! Saw lots and lots. Lakes and waterfalls!

Thursday Apr 22, 2010 #

Note

Was hoping to wake up ready-to-go for at least a jog this morning, but still weird body temp regulation and headache. Letting my immune system have full power for this one and not training through it... go immune system, go!

8 AM

Running 7:00 [1]

Jog over to physio's for appointment.

Strength 25:00 [1]

Got to put weight on the wobble board, Marlo was psyched I apparently learned how to jump rope, but disappointed I completely flopped over on my ankle Sunday... made me ice it and told me I should have been icing every night. Suppose so, just doesn't seem like a big deal when it doesn't swell up or anything!

Felt not-too-terrible doing the exercises, a little weird because still a bit feverish.

Monday Apr 19, 2010 #

Note

Woke up with a fever again in the middle of the night, probably when the advil wore off... so took more and went back to bed. Today=no training day, in the hopes of actually getting better!

Positive note on weekend: no ankle crunches!!! Woo! (One twist all the way over, but just slightly sore today, no prob.)

Running warm up/down 8:00 [1]

To the start, easy jog on road, then walk up the big hill. Mmmm definitely wiped body!

Orienteering 1:13:10 [2]

Map-memory middle with Becky, who was also feeling a bit tired. This was sooo much better than slogging away out there myself! (She gets points for suggesting!) =)

We switched who led each leg. The person leading doesn't look at the map because they should be navigating off of map memory, the person following tries to get enough out of the map while running to have a plan for the following leg.

Super-good exercise. I definitely floundered more than once. Most often, I'd get within the control circle and then not actually have a clue what feature I was looking for... in some sense that's good because I'm getting to a point where I could then have a map peek and put things together and nab the control. But even better would be able to visualize the control circle and know already where I'm headed!

Also, must run with a map more, would love reading-while-running to be more natural!

Note
(sick)

Woke up in the middle of the night with a smashing headache and it was still around come morning. Felt off in the morning, had no appetite and felt a bit feverish, actually went back to bed at 7.30 for a solid hour-long nap... hmmm... decided to go training anyways, but also to start taking antibiotics incase it's related to my tick bite from last weekend...

Symptons: fever, bad headache, lazy. Not really naseous at all, just food didn't seem that interesting.

A does of Advil (thanks Marie!) took care of symptoms enough for me to do the morning training at Harriman, which was great. Felt fine until I got home and collapsed for 2hr in a feverish headachy mess...

Running 13:00 [1]

Run out with Erin and Tracey and back in.

Orienteering 1:28:00 intensity: (28:00 @1) + (1:00:00 @2)

Harriman Camp, Sat morning

Line-o I did really carefully, just walking, making sure I was on line and taking everything in, noting how things were mapped.

Control pick #1: Pretty good. Lessons learned: Do *not* like rhododendron. Maybe I already knew that, but reaffirmation. Should not be afraid of broken-line swamps. They might actually be fast for running.

Contouring: fine, think I stayed about the right height.

Control pick #2: Felt quite with it, but bit of a problem being too low for one control (dragged down by slope), then also puzzled by the control with no flag. Relocated off the bolder nearby twice before being convinced. Also,I found it difficult to differentiate between open, semi-open and bare rock...

3 PM

Running 7:00 [1]

Jog to and from physio.

Strength 15:00 [1]

Plyos/exercises at physio-
hopscotch
wobble board
jump rope
ladder things
bosu ball

Physio and guy she was helping were chatting about the merits of various cruise lines. I was amused. Not my type of vacation!
6 PM

Running 35:11 intensity: (24:50 @1) + (10:21 @5)

Over to the Amherst track where some steeplechase guys were just finishing their last barrier drills and what looked like the distance women were doing their circuits- perfect timing as they were just done with practice and no one else was yet walking their dog or jogging in lane 1.

Two laps warm up, with strides on straights then:

2 x (4 x 400m, 1min rest), 1 lap jog = 3 min rest in between sets

First set: 81 77 77 77
Second set: 78 77 77 77

Like those 77's apparently! Psyched with consistency and that I'm not way slow after taking time off from the cold.

5 PM

Running 50:42 [1]

Wanted a long run, but some inner hamstring muscle is sore from Monday's plyos at the physio- what? Aren't they supposed to target my ankle?

Ran to pick up my tuned-up bike from the shop (needed rusting chain replaced) then drove out to Amethyst Brook for a trail run. Lovely run, went to the top after a short unintended detour (only been out there at night before, things look different!) and back down.

Monday Apr 12, 2010 #

4 PM

Running 16:27 [1]

Jog over to physio's then home, with laptop containing backpack...

Strength 15:00 [1]

Plyos at physio's office. I am really terrible at jumping rope how they want me too- I always do two little hops per rotation, they want just one, but a little hop, not a big one, which means you have to spin the rope really fast. And then I miss.

12 PM

Running warm up/down 14:00 [1]

Warm up run around Lake Bray at Mt. Tom. Was staying in contact with the map as I ran, and then couldn't find a boulder where I wanted to. So searched it out, which took embarrassingly long.

Orienteering 45:00 [2]

Ran around the south of the road bit of the Western Mass Rules event from last fall. Felt not good going up hills (breathing issues), but otherwise wasn't too knackered from the illness, so hope I'm nearly healthy! Went pretty well, and also didn't wear brace by mistake and still didn't crunch ankle, so psyched about that!
1 PM

Strength (ankle plyos) 5:00 [1]

Skips and squats. Everyone loves someone wierdo jumping around their parking lot!

Saturday Apr 10, 2010 #

Running 16:32 [1]

Still feeling blah from cold, little running to and from errands.

Strength 15:00 [0]

10 min abs
1 min back
~4 min ankle exercises

I am totally crap at doing balance tip toes. One of my exercises is to raise up onto tip toes on one foot and then balance there for 10-30 sec. 10 is pushing it at the moment...!

Thursday Apr 8, 2010 #

Running 32:00 [1]

Little mid-afternoon jog. Lovely weather. Ran around, did some plyo exercises, saw two turtles scamper away into the pond then swim. There are also some really impressive cherry trees in blossom around campus. Woo!

Wednesday Apr 7, 2010 #

Note
(sick)

Ill since I woke up with a sore throat yesterday. So just chillin til it won't feel really bad to breathe hard.
3 PM

Strength (ankle) 20:00 [0]

Got back into physio because someone else canceled. Was shown bunches of exercises to do. Mission: really, frickin' strong ankles. Here I come!
6 PM

Strength 11:00 [0]

10 min abs, 1 min back

Monday Apr 5, 2010 #

8 AM

Note

Exhausterated from awesome orienteering weekend! But had 8.30 am physio visit for ankle stuff. She was a bit surprised about how sore my ankles were- all those little muscles complained no matter which way she twisted! But now have plyo exercises to do to work on ankle strength and priopreception (however you spell that...!)

Running 17:00 [1]

Some running, some control collecting. Woo!
10 AM

Orienteering intervals 45:52 [4]

'Guessing' exercise with Becky. Goal was to choose different routes, guess how long it would take (whoops, we forgot to do that!) and then race along the different routes to the next control, so ended up being very interval-like!

Was both a great workout and a great exercise. Made you thing about the route, try to execute a given plan and immediate feedback/note comparing. Good times.

Splits were:
3.34, 1.57, 2.52, 2.22, 6.17, 3.07, 4.13, 7.44, 8.30, 3.52, 2.24

Bit clueless on the way to 7, marshes were not a great attackpoint, at least without some more focus than I gave them. Also a bit off to number 9, but reward: saw a real live beaver! Not sure I've ever seen one on land before...
11 AM

Running warm up/down 12:04 [1]

Jog back with Becky, we went and had a look at the beaver dam out of curiosity, but wasn't quite complete enough to cross- abandoned now?
1 PM

Orienteering 47:21 [2]

Control Pick #1

Was trying to stay focused and notice everything I needed between points. Mostly worked, certainly way way way more comfy than yesterday morning!!!

I redid 2 that went really badly the first time 4-5 and 15-16. 5 was tricky, very hidden among boulders on the edge of a little pond, but I was way off high the first time. Number 16 I actually didn't even find the first time around- I think I was a bit off to the east, then circled around south of it, ending up west where I finally really relocated and exasperated-ly headed back to 15 to try again.

Was totally getting tired at the end. Took a few short breaks at controls to keep focus. I know I won't be able to do that in a race, but I think worth it for trying to get the most out of training when super duper tired!

Running warm up/down 7:00 [1]

Warm up out there for night-o!

Orienteering (night) 48:00 [1]

Night-o with buddy Alex.

So I don't think I was doing too terribly, but kept having Alex point out better routes or that I wasn't on the trail I thought I was... Good to be out there anyways, very different perspective at night!
10 AM

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2]

Warm up chatting with Sam, warm down back by myself.
11 AM

Orienteering 1:15:00 [3]

Control pick at Pawtuckaway.

Gosh, not so great! Most confused to number 1, but also other times. Felt totally clutzy running into trees and such left and right and was everything but smooth in and out of controls...

Very impressed by the size of the boulders!
2 PM

Running 15:00 [1]

Warm up chatting with Alex.

Orienteering 1:34:00 [3]

Simplification exercise. Much better than the morning, and most afore-made plans were executed ok, but occasionally really badly. Think I was getting a bit unfocused by the end because of dehydration/tiredness!

However, worst bit was ending up at #1 while attempting to get from 2->3. So I gave up getting to 3, and made myself do 1->2->3 again...

A few others, drifted off bearing. Need to remember to aim off perhaps.

2 PM

Running intervals (track) 1:00:11 intensity: (48:00 @1) + (12:11 @5)

Track workout on a lovely sunny afternoon with Sanjay and Sergio.

We tried the UMass track, but they were having 'real' track practice, so no-go. Over to the highschool, where they were having 'track' practise, which meant they stretched, ran a lap or two, mostly seemed to bask in the sun... but think that was just the middle-schoolers...

800 - 2.46
400 - 79
800 - 2.47
400 - 79
800 - 2.44
400 - 76

Sergio did just 800s as he's training for Boston and 400s are a bit short. Sanjay did most with me, only the first half of the last 800 though. Not bad I don't think, none of these was a total crazy push, although did push the ends of the last two.
