Running 52:42 [2]

Noontime run with Sanjay and Sergio, ~7miles, about 1/3 or so on trails, then another bit on dirt roads. Sooooo nice to have company, especially given the rain! Ankle was a bit sensitive today, didn't crunch it, but felt pressure with flexion.

Feel tight and sore now, which is probably expected after lots of running and not a day off for awhile! Tomorrow will just be climbing, I think.

Orienteering 1:08:22 [4]

Mt. Tom Western Mass Score-O

Whew, 3rd race in 4 days- practice for summer multidays? Also a super-gorgeous day and nice woods. Anyways, if yesterday my focus was on navigating well, today I was trying to be fierce and ferocious through the woods, without of course, totally losing track of where I was. I think I was slightly faster per k today? I made a few more mistakes than yesterday (3 vs. 1, although none of todays were as big as the one yesterday) and 3 more ankle crunches (one kinda bad, argh!).

So, what was up with the mistakes? 16 -> 13 I think I didn't pay enough attention to my bearing, was dragged down the hillside a bit between streams, then mistook the nearest pile of rocks for the pile of rocks I actually wanted to be near. 6 -> 11 goofed up leaving the trail far too late and then still being unsure where exactly where I was when I left the trail. 11 -> 10 headed too far south, hit the trail below. Revamped plan to attack from the trail corner, but even messed up that plan by heading down when I hit the hillside scar instead of up, major whoops.

Some other controls were spot-on (but not all). Definitely fell like I was running a bit less timid today. Hopefully I can finally get rid of this ankle crunch over the winter!

Thanks to Phil for organizing/planning and PG, Gail and all others who helped! Was loads of fun!

Orienteering (control collecting) 25:00 [2]

Control collecting with Eric afterwards: 15, 18, 17, 16, 14. I navigated to 15 and 17, let him to 18, 16, 14. He hadn't been able to find 16 or 14 during the race, so think he was psyched to be able to find them later! Is more detailed and tricky terrain up that side of the road!

Headed into Northampton for pizza afterwards, unfortunately did not find the same pizza joint as others, but was too starving to look long...

Running warm up/down 4:30 [1]

Short warm up before heading out.

Orienteering race 1:13:28 [4] 6.7 km (10:58 / km)

HVO event at Blue Mountain Reserve

So much fun! The woods were so so nice to run through, nice day, if a bit cool, and good terrain, little hills and rock and cliffs and marshes. Loved it!

Had a pretty good run around, not frantic, was trying to focus on good navigation, but that went way wrong on my way to 8, when I went 90 degrees too far around a swamp took going down the hill and seeing a big lake to make me figure out that one... oops!

And, although I wasn't pushing it flying through the woods, no ankle crunches! Woo! Legs still a bit sore from Thursday's race still- had to have a quick stretch break at 1 to stretch out the hamstrings too.

Brought along nearly the whole family- Dad, Mom, Stephi, Stephi's boyfriend Eric and Stephi's friend Nancy. Stephi did well on Brown, Eric and Nancy walked Yellow in good time and Dad nearly completed the Orange, despite breaking a rib around control 2!

Orienteering 12:00 [2]

A run around the last 4 controls of orange having a look for dad. Went out with Stephi, alternating navigating. Good fun, but dad beat us back in the end anyways.

XC skiing (rollerski skate) 47:41 [1]

Recovery skate ski around my basic route backwards. Bit drizzly and dreary out. Organ Hill road could really use some re-paving- its a critical part of the loop!

Felt ok, but certainly tired from yesterday's race- even my back is sore? How does road running get your back sore?

Thursday Nov 26, 2009 #

Running warm up/down 7:00 [1]

Warm up around the parking lot. Felt ok, right ankle a bit wierd feeling.

Running race 31:07 [4] 5.0 mi (6:13 / mi)

5mi Turkey Trot from Arlington High School

Good run! I haven't done a road race, or even a cross-country one in ages and ages. (Over a year?) A very hilly 5 mi for being on the roads. I started fast, a bit scared that the first mile was in 6.27, but pretty much kept on pace- I think the variation in mile times is mostly due to the hills.

6.27
6.17
5.53
6.55
5.33

Right quad is a bit sore now- may have strained it a bit flying down the last hill (hence the 5.33 last mile....)

Was only about a minute behind the first woman (Marissa), was 3rd overall. Now time for turkey!!!!

Running 10:00 [1]

Could not sleep last night- so annoying! I blame climbing until 10pm + being super duper excited to head home for Thanksgiving...

So missed 6am Amity Hills, jogged to gym on way into work instead.

Crosstrainer 30:00 [1]

At gym (ankle feels a bit overused):
10 min wierd wave cross-trainer thing (kinda like skate skiing mixed with salsa dancing)
10 min elliptical
10 min bike

Some awful tv show was on. Must remember Ipod.

Running 1:01:00 [2]

Good evening trail run with Sanjay again. Bit shorter this time, possibly also a bit slower, last week was pretty intense. Tried out the new headlamp, like it! Better than the wee one I have for mountain marathons.

It's amazing how fast an hour of running goes in the dark when you're continually focused about foot placement!

Strength (climbing) 20:00 [1]

Climbing with Christina. Think I did 5 routes? Warm-up yellow, then a new 5.8 in the corner, a 5.9- in the corner (with the flake), Seattlite (5.9) and Green Toucan (5.8). Seattlite still has one really tough move for me that I definitely haven't mastered. Still have to work on that one. Really like Green Toucan, basically switchbacks up the wall.

Orienteering race 56:26 [4] 5.8 km (9:44 / km)

WCOC event: Hemlock Hills, Red

Decent run, just a few mistakes. Didn't feel super springy out there, but not real sluggish either. Was a bit freaked out by the north lines not being perpendicular to the map edges at the beginning... made me suspicious of my bearings.

One mistake was flying what must have been right by #8, having decided that the spur I was looking for was further on. Probably just needed an extra map glance and checked in with the terrain- there were signals, just not slap-you-in-the-face obvious signals. Probably lost 1.5 min or so.

Other biggish one was just a poor route choice to #15, I decided to go up, and then down super-duper steep hillside. Around, on trails, would have been faster! (Realized this comparing splits with PG).

Only one minor ankle crunch just near the finish- must must must be getting better, I hope!

Orienteering 50:17 [3]

Orange course with Eric, alternating navigating legs.

Was good fun, interesting to see how he orienteered (super well for 2nd time ever!), reminded me of when I was just starting! I did fine on my legs, but not amazing, came off the trail too late to #2, distracted by another small hill near #4 (too far east). Bit tired by the end, especially when we took an extra hilly route to 9!

Running 9:00 [1]

Little jogging warm up around the neighborhood- super gorgeous day. Lovely.

XC skiing (rollerskiing, skating) 1:43:24 [1]

Was thinking of going over to train with CSU ski folks, but that would have been an 1h15 drive, and folks from around here were going somewhere just 30 min away, so opted for that.

Gorgeous, gorgeous ski! Perfect temperature, nice pavement, few cars, no killer downhills. No one exactly my speed to train with, but that was ok. Don and Sully were classic skiing (they are training for the Craftsbury marathon) and an engineering postdoc named Cody was along with rollerblades- he apparently picked up skiing while working on a project in Norway last year. I wish Norway and/or Sweden did more astrophysics!

Stopped at a little cafe/bakery for lunch afterwards called Bread Euphoria, yummy panini on scrumptious bread, so ended up buying the week's bread there too... =)

Route: North from Williamsburg, through Conway and just into Ashfield before taking a left on Ludwig road- follow this up up up to the top.

Friday Nov 20, 2009 #

Running 33:48 [1]

Up and out the door at 6.10am to meet Amity hill folks- no one else showed! Ok, so it was pouring out, and dark, but I kinda thought they liked being tough and going no matter what... so ran back down the hill to my apt, dropped off extra clothes and went out for a little run. It really was pouring, soaked within minutes. Easy day.

Running intervals (Orchard Hill) 12:34 [5]

Orchard hill intervals with Sanjay and Paul. Paul went quick on the first one, and I followed, ended up new PR! Then got slower again for the 2nd and 3rd- but stayed under 4.20 for all!

4.03
4.14
4.17

Running 27:00 [3]

Warm up, down, recoveries. Far too warm out to snow....

Wednesday Nov 18, 2009 #

Crosstrainer warm up/down 25:00 [1]

Warm up and cool down. Decided to cross-train today as my knee was hurting Monday... don't think anything is wrong, but just a low-impact day in case.

Running (treadmill) 15:00 [2]

5 more min warm up, then 2 min recoveries

Running intervals 5:00 [5]

Some high-quality work. May be getting a bit cold to do true speedwork outside... so 5 x 1 min at:
11 mph = 81.6 s/400
10.5
10.7
10.8
10.9

Hard to do really good speed on a treadmill, but this is an attempt at least!

Strength (climbing) 20:00 [1]

Climbed 5 routes I think? Getting to be comfy with 5.8s, time to work on 5.9s- tried one at the end and there was one move I really couldn't get.

Strength 8:00 [1]

8 min abs with David and Christina after climbing.

Tuesday Nov 17, 2009 #

Running (night trail) 1:25:00 [3]

Amethyst Brook with Sanjay and Paul @ 6pm

Pretty tough night time trail run! Up up up from pretty close to the beginning up Mount Orient, then around a bit on the other side, up a bit more and flying back down on the way back.

Crunched the ankle a few times, never too badly, think thats good for how fast we were going with little time to process the minimal visual input into foot placement! (Also: no ankle brace.) Ankles were actually quite tired to start with from Sunday still... didn't kill them tonight, must make them stronger!

Ran with mini headlight and my bike light in my hand (far brighter).

Monday Nov 16, 2009 #

Strength 20:00 [1]

Just a core workout, forgot running clothes to work and wasn't motivated to run in the dark once I got back!

Sunday Nov 15, 2009 #

Orienteering race 1:59:25 [4] 13.9 km (8:35 / km) +280m 7:48 / km

Blue Hills Traverse

Pretty good for most of it, made plans and they worked, which was really fun. The start was of course panic-ed (eventually ended up on the road) and close to 2 was just a mess. 18 I also had major issues locating the cliff among the rocks, which was way frustrating to loose time like 100m from the finish!!! Think I was pretty straight on, but then tempted to go higher for some reason... I was aiming for 'near top of rocks', but there was open scattered rock above the true rock field part of it, pulling me higher. Still learning about rock features.

Mass start made it interesting to be racing around people. Was definitely tired by the end, but think I went a good pace. Taking 2 glasses of water was key, had that dehydrated taste in my mouth by the end of the race anyways.

Got a friend from Boston out to try his first orienteering think he enjoyed it, the orange more than the yellow, which is a good sign! Also carpooled with PG and Gail, great to have such good company for the car trip!

Wearing the race t-shirt now. Woo blue! Like it. =)

Friday Nov 13, 2009 #

Running 53:52 [2]

Amity Hills with Dave and George.

Forgot to take either pair of running shoes home, so did these in my trail runners- so opted to run on the little grass verge as much as possible to not wear them out on the pavement!

Thursday Nov 12, 2009 #

Running 31:00 [1]

Orchard Hill intervals with Sanjay and Nina

Warm up, one loop of the interval before intervalling (so I knew where to go), then recoveries and warm-down.

Running intervals (Orchard Hill) 13:00 [5]

4.13
4.15
4.28

Apparently tired on that last one! The first two were also with Sanjay either right in front or in back, last one was alone (he had a cold, so packed in early).

This is a really good interval- mostly up, but some flat sections too, almost all off-road. I'll probably be doing it a bunch more- is only a 5 min run from the dept.

Wednesday Nov 11, 2009 #

Running 54:59 [2]

With noon running group from work- good little 7ish mile loop with a good deal on trails- so nice to be able to get trails on a quick from-work run!

Tuesday Nov 10, 2009 #

Running intervals (track) 11:11 [5]

3 x (800, 200 roll-on, 400), 2 min rest

3.11, 1.25
2.54, 1.26
2.54, 1.21

First 800 was really inexcusably slow. Maybe needed a few strides beforehand, or just to be a bit more awake? Others were ok, not super-speedy, might be a bit tired.

There was also a maitenence vehicle parked in lane 1 near the waterjump pit on the 2nd turn. Think they must be closing it for the winter, but was annoying to have to go around!

Running 23:00 [1]

Warm up, cool down, and roll-ons.

Drills 5:00 [1]

Normal track drills.

Strength 5:00 [1]

5 min abs after some stretching, hopefully I won't get as sore as after 10 x 400s!

Monday Nov 9, 2009 #

Running 44:19 [2]

Run with the noon-time runners at UMass, nice loop involving a fair bit of trail in the general Puffers Pond area. Was a gorgeous day, but I packed for the run when it was still below freezing this morning, so was a bit overdressed...

Must remember to bring more food to the office for post-run lunch. Requires more calories than normal lunch!

Sunday Nov 8, 2009 #

Running warm up/down 5:00 [1]

Little warm up.

Orienteering race 1:30:08 [4] 8.4 km (10:44 / km)

CSU Pine Hill Event

This went pretty well, with one major problem- after the shared 11/21 control, went to 20 instead of 12 the first time... oops...

Otherwise, was much happier with my running + navigating than yesterday, much less headless-chicken-running. Had plans which mostly worked. Was also running decently, but got tired around 18. Really enjoyed it!

Let's see, what to work on based on this race- I still need to get more ferocious through terrain. Also, for cliffs, need to think a bit about the fact taht the controls are almost always at the foot. I found my self at the top so often, and once couldn't see the control just below, which confused me for a bit.

Orienteering 41:14 [3] 3.1 km (13:18 / km)

Pine Hill
No trails 3.1 k course. (Meaning no trails printed on map!)

Lori mentioned yesterday that there'd be a map like this, so after a few cookies and some water after the Blue, I decided to head back out and train on this course.

Trickier with no trails! Definitely worth doing. A bit easier because I'd been to most of the controls before, so the within-the-circle was easy, but that's not where missing the trails is hard anyways. Did decently well getting from point to point. Worst on 8, where I drifted, entranced by another reentrant and on 10, where I was just somewhere on the hillside, and didn't have much to go by and was super-tired...

Saturday Nov 7, 2009 #

Running warm up/down 12:00 [1]

Good warm up, didn't want to pull anything after I've been so sore all week.

Orienteering race 1:04:12 [4] 4.95 km (12:58 / km)

Started, and ran really badly for the first 4 controls or so. Okay, mostly the 2nd and 4th. Missed the right way over the fence to 2, then picked the first hill on the way to 4, not the 2nd one, and searched all over it for awhile. Partially knew that it felt too early, but it seemed so right for a bit.... argh! Went better after those, but still not super-on. Maybe just haven't been orienteering enough- been since the Highlander?

Friday Nov 6, 2009 #

Running 28:52 [1]

Just a little morning jog. After running hills on Wed, my body freaked out again and had a super-duper sore quad. Think my hamstring wasn't quite back to normal on Wed, and was probably running wierd which aggravated the quad. Argh! Felt the quad even just on the jog, but not nearly as bad as yesterday!

Wednesday Nov 4, 2009 #

Running 48:52 [2]

Amity Hills. Good little session, hamstring tolerable. Nice that it was in the light and not in the rain this week!

Tuesday Nov 3, 2009 #

Note

Hamstring more normally sore today. So I can walk with just a bit of pain, not limp-inducing pain. Think it'll be ready for jogging tomorrow... Maybe some circuits this afternoon.

Strength 6:00 [1]

Some ab work while cooking dinner.

Monday Nov 2, 2009 #

Note

Broken body. Yee-ouch! Right inner hamstring is way way painful. Doesn't want to walk at all. But thing it's just a strain, not a pull. Feels like that anyways. Will take a few days prob, but not more I'm guessing... Suppose I knew I was doing this to myself yesterday...!

Sunday Nov 1, 2009 #

Running race 48:58 [4] 3.6 mi (13:36 / mi) +762m 8:12 / mi

Moosilauke TT- 3.6 mi, ~2500 ft

Decided not to race while warming up, becuase hamstrings felt like they were about to snap. But then it didn't feel so bad, so did decide to race after about 5 minutes... doesn't need to stretch as far going up hill.

And... did a PB!!! =) About 30 seconds faster than my best previous time. Pretty psyched, because definitely wasn't rested in any way shape or form for it, and was just dilly-dally jogging for the first bit, so sure I could be even faster...

A perfect day for it. Clear, almost entirely dry trail, only frost on top, no snow to wade through.

Running 30:00 [1]

Back down from time trial. Probably actually took longer, but didn't time it...
Chatting with folks most of the way down, good times!
