Note

Knees giving me grief after the road run this morning. Magnified by a few niggles I was carrying no doubt. Will avoid road until Friday when I am doing 10km road race, not ideal timing but sure will do it since I've paid the entry! Damn roads...

Orienteering race 17:08 [5] 4.4 km (3:54 / km) +30m 3:46 / km

IOC Sprint Relay - Lisburn

Proper WOC model Sprint relay, with a slick operation and superbly organised with full quarantine for different runners and then each leg brought in turn to the assembly. The first leg runners were led to the start by a bag piper and the start was laid out with barriers and maps stuck on boards for incoming runners to pass to outgoing runners, There was first aid tent and the MOO! It gave us a good insight as to how they do it at WOC. It was just a shame there were so few teams (9 full teams and one partial team?) to experience it, be them internationals or nationals.

I ran on team with Caoimhe on leg 1, myself leg 2, Hellsac 3 and Fionne 4 (now this relay format makes it easy for parents with young children!). The course had some tricky bits and I really struggled figuring out the underpass at full speed first time through and had to stop to make sure it was not out of bounds to follow footpath at the side of the main road. Other than that the walled gardens made for some interesting controls and again found myself slowing to pick the right route. After some teams mispunched and some missing out controls (!!!), we the united CNOC and CORKO stormed to a podium finish. Great fun!

Orienteering race 56:54 [5] 10.8 km (5:16 / km) +100m 5:02 / km

Lisburn City Race.

It was indulgent to do this event after a full weekend of orienteering, but if I have the opportunity to orienteer i'll take it.

I had a bit of an advantage over some of the other competitors having run on part of the area earlier in the day, especially knowing how the underpass worked and the walled garden. Lisburn has plenty of small alleyways making it interesting for the most part. I ran hard and clean up to 23. However, looked at the leg to 24 and didn't see the path along the river so decided if the undergrowth was shite I would take another route, it was shite - lots of nettles and I was wearing shorts, meant I opted for the route to the left, made this decision before reaching 24 and so punched and turned back around without seeing any path, would be interested to know if the path was visible from the control? It would be a classic example of an orienteers tunnel vision, I'ld made decision to turn back way I came, so saw control, punched and turned. Lost two minutes on this leg as left really wasn't a route if you had spotted the path, which to me seemed quite indistinct on the map while running. Had another miss at 29, nice control placement meant you had to read description carefully on approach, I initially headed for first tunnel, I corrected but didn't see second tunnel initially and headed down to approach from north, realised mistake and it was worth my while to turn around again and head back for the second tunnel, doh! Legs were pretty tired for last couple km. While out on run passed a nice playground so brought kids there after event. 2nd and a long way behind murraystraining
