Terrain (Trail) 2:30:00 [2] ***
shoes: Oroc 280

FFRC NYD plus an extra half hour beforehand to make sure it was a legit long run. Nobody else wanted to do the full loop, so I ran a lot of it on my own. Trail was getting pretty greasy by the end with the sun thawing everything. Glad I went with the Orocs; grip wasn't a problem.

Looked liked this one might require some fast running, so I did a short warmup.

Orienteering race (Woods) 1:02:00 [4] ***
34c shoes: Oroc 280

SLOC 1Hr@Brormmelsiek(1:5). Did run pretty hard, but what really would have carried the day was more speed through the trashy stuff. I'm just really out of practice with that. Anyway, Yvonne set a good course and the length was exactly what she was shooting for: 1 sweep in just under an hour. Only other sweep was me but, as you can see from the time, I didn't get in. Fun stuff.

Map is odd, to say the least. 1m LIDAR contours that haven't been smoothed. No problem to read them, just weird. Vegetation wasn't mapped very well, but I don't think that was a problem. Visibility was good enough that you could see the nasty stuff from a ways off and decide whether to go around. In general, it was faster to just suck it up and push through.

Big apology to Yvonne. I was sure during the meet that 14 was misplaced and told her so at the finish. Afterwards, I checked and it was, in fact, in the right spot. I still think the smaller ditches would be better represented with the ditch symbol, but the bag was in the right little squiggle. Glad I didn't pitch a fit about it.

FatTire (Gravel) 2:05:00 [2] ***
shoes: Bike: Raleigh RXS (SS/CX)

Had planned on a longer loop, but my legs were pretty soft after the meet and I didn't want to finish the ride with a dead legs grind back on Callaway Fork. Even with the distance reduced, keeping the 57 turning on that grade was pretty much all I had. The climb up from Matson, on the other hand, well, it wasn't pretty, but I did ride the whole thing. Might need to knock the gear down further if I'm really going to make the RXS my only bike. (Gasp! Did he just say only bike?).

Note

I'm going to bring my gravel bike to the O meet tomorrow, since it's in prime gravel country. I don't know the roads out there particularly well, so if someone with more knowledge wants to join me after the meet for a ride, I'd love to have a guide.
