4 PM

Running (Road) 28:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Sayonara 2

Decided to go for a half hour jog to see if the toe was going to be a problem. Felt OK for 28 minutes and then started sending STOP DOING THIS NOW signals. Walked the remaining half mile home. Looks like this is going to be a prolonged outage, so the injury flag goes on.

New I'd be working well into the night, so I left work after lunch and crossed the river for some gravel. Katy out to Black Walnut with a diversion for some singletrack at Bangert Island. Longest ride on this bike. It's comfortable enough, but I was ready to stop at the end. No regrets about not becoming a gravel racer, I'm not sure I'd want to go four times this distance.

Note
weight:174lbs (rest day)

Another "rest day" mandated by load at school and work. I think these are going to become increasingly common. The G has responded as one might expect to the combination of reduced training and three lunch meetings this week.

Note
(rest day)

More of a "no time to train" day than a rest day, but it fit in fine with my schedule and the weather sucked so, all good.

Monday Oct 26, 2015 #

4 PM

FatTire (Trail) 45:00 [2] **
shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

Wanted to ride off road, but didn't feel like putting any effort into technique, so I took the SUV for a spin around Duck in the Woods.

Did I mention I busted my toe yesterday? Yeah, that's awesome.

Old School Loop. The tiny bit of rain we got on Thursday did nothing to soften the ground, so I went with light shoes rather than barefool.

Chubb from Lone Elk. This workout is a keeper and will hereafter be referred to as Fast Tracks. Tyson side @51:32 (M-pace), tracks to tracks @16:07 (T). If these times look a bit precise for someone who threw away his stopwatch, they are. It seems this is one of those jobs you can't just walk away from. Either that, or making significant life plans while drinking with friends is a really bad idea.

Anyway, the paces were OK, but the legs aren't all the way back. The M-pace part in particular felt too hard (even adjusting for West Tyson). I've never put two marathon cycles so close together. Given that I really need to focus on school through the end of the term, I'm going to lighten the first six weeks of the cycle a bit. The next six are the crucial weeks and they coincide with winter break, so it's possible this will all work.

The casualty in all this is Tunnel Hill. No way I can run that and put any kind of marathon cycle together.

FatTire (Mix) 30:00 [2] **

Work to Balaban's via Chesterfield Central Park. Apparently, they had a cross race here recently as there was a telltale band of worn grass snaking around the park. Good venue and the course seemed well thought out, but I'm glad I didn't do the race because the ground was so hard a bumpy that I had a headache after just one lap.
6 PM

Cycling (Road) 1:15:00 [2]
shoes: Bike: Raleigh RXS (SS/CX)

Home from Balaban's after enjoying happy hour with Kate. Didn't drink much, which was good because I lost my multi-tool out of my saddlebag with all that bouncing around, so I rode the course again to try to find it. I didn't find it, but I did enjoy the course a bit more the second time round.

Terrain (Trail) 2:00:00 [2] ****
shoes: Lone Peak 2.5

TTR run at Rockwoods Res. All the little loops, then an out & back on Greenrock. A bit harder than I had planned on going (or maybe my legs are just more tired than I had accounted for). Having put out the effort to stay with the leaders for the first half hour, it seemed silly not to stick with them the rest of the way. At any rate, it was still an L/E run, but on the firm end rather than the recovery end.

UMSL Donut Dash. 5K + 2 donuts. First overall. Hilly course; not sure how good the measurement was; MapMyRun thinks it was close. Legs aren't all the way back, but way better than last week.

GO Halloween 10K.

Ya know, there comes a point where you need to trust yourself when someone tells you something and it just sounds fishy. There's this thought in the running community that you can run a really good 10K the weekend after a competitive marathon. Maybe they have different ideas of "really good" or maybe they have different ideas of "competitive marathon" or maybe they are just plain nuts, but this sucked so bad I can't even put it into words. Every step was agony. Sure, the time is OK, and I did win my age group but damn, no fun at all.
5 PM

Terrain (Trail) 45:00 [1] **

Hiking at Cuivre River with Yaya.

FFRC run. Ran the bootlegger loop with Len Debeer and Jim Huss rather than the lake path. As they just did the OT100 MTB last weekend they weren't moving any faster than me.
2 PM

Terrain (Trail) 1:00:00 [1] ***
shoes: Speedstar 6

Hiking Babler with Yaya. Too much time on my feet for having a race tomorrow, but we're not caring about results anymore, right?

BTW, to reinforce that attitude, I threw away my watch (it was pretty much dead anyway). All training times will be best guess going forward.

Running (Road) 2:58:48 [5] 26.22 mi (6:49 / mi)

Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon. Very tough run. Problems with the hips right from the start and never found 6:40 pace (although I did have several miles quicker than that, I wasn't able to settle into it as a rhythm). So different from Woodlands that just flowed, this one was forced the whole way. Sometimes that's what ya gotta do and the end result was respectable: "first" M50-54 (rolled down to me since there was a separate Overall Senior prize) and 47th overall.

Really not a bad end to a competitive marathoning career. Now, time to put this nonsense behind me and get my doctorate.
