7 AM

Running (Road) 30:00 [2]
shoes: DS Trainers

Over to the store to get a few things so I could get cooking for tonight. Wound up with about 5 pounds in the pack and it didn't hurt the shoulder running home. Perhaps I'll be able to return to adventure racing next year.
4 PM

Cycling (Road) 1:24:00 [2]
shoes: Bike:Cannondale Road

Really didn't have time for a ride, but with clear skies and temps in the 60's, it seemed positively criminal to not get out at all. Besides, our guests for the evening are friends I've known for 30 years; it's not like they were going to turn around and walk out if the house wasn't perfectly done.

Terrain (Grass) 21:00 [2] **

Back in STL. Barefoot on the powerline. 27F, which is the coldest I've run barefoot since I when I was a kid. I don't think I'll be looking to beat that, either. Not so much because of the cold, but when the ground is frozen hard, every little lump is like stepping on a rock. I think this short run did as much harm as good for my feet.
3 PM

Running (Track) 53:00 [4]
shoes: Speedstar 4

8x200@40 200R. Includes warmup over to track.

Running (Road) 38:00 [2]
shoes: Speedstar 4

Then an easy jog home with a couple extra miles thrown in.

Damage from this morning is worse than I thought. Quite a bit of blistering on the toes. Must have happened after they went numb so I couldn't feel them getting torn up. Bummer, but not a catastrophy. I'll probably need to ride instead of run for a couple days.

Terrain (Snow) 54:00 [2] **
(rest day) shoes: DS Trainers

More running around UI campus, this time with a couple inches of snow on top of the grass. Still no wind. I'm not complaining about that, mind you.

Terrain (Grass) 1:25:00 [2] *

Through UI campus hitting all the quads and athletic fields. Hard freeze overnight and much more seasonal temps this morning. No wind though so it still scores on the weirdness scale.

(rest day)

Drove to Champain after church. No room at the houses of any of Kate's family members, so we're staying at the Homewood Suites which are pretty nice. 50F Christmas in St Louis isn't that unusual but 45 here is certainly out of character. Went for a quick barefoot run in Hessel Park to loosen up. Longtime readers may recall this as the site of the infamous first kiss.

Terrain (Trail) 3:24:00 [2] ***
shoes: MT101

Lewis trail clockwise solo, then met the 7:30 SLUG group for clockwise loops of Lewis and Clark. Need to get in more headlamp running on technical trail; felt rather tentative until the sun came up. Other than that, it was a truly fine run.

Friday Dec 23, 2011 #

5 AM

Terrain (Grass) 1:04:00 [2] *
shoes: DS Trainers

In to work via Pebble Acres. Partly to keep getting the road shoes all gooped but mostly just for a change of venue. Was a little surprised that this route is almost the same time as the powerline, which is about a mile less distance. I guess it's just the shorter grass, but I didn't realize the taller stuff on the powerline was slowing me down that much. Might be something I should work on a bit.
3 PM

Terrain (Grass) 1:42:00 [3] *

Duck(U)@19:08. Includes work to CC Lake via Hogs Hollow and then back home via the powerline.

Finally found tempo pace. Let the brutality which is Daniel's Marathon Formula begin.

Time for a day completely off.

Sunday Dec 18, 2011 #

1 PM

Running (Road) 25:00 [2]
shoes: DS Trainers

Wasn't expecting this to be a loggable session, but Yaya wanted me to chase her all around Longview Park while she was on her scooter. As the bike path there is quite hilly, it was a moderately firm effort to stay close (she wants everybody to know that she won every lap).

I would have preferred that we were out at the SLOC party (Rudy is probably wanting to strangle me as I keep standing him up). However, I had to sing in church (warning: link has video and audio) this morning and we did the sacrement of annointing today as well, we weren't even out of church until after the meet had started.
4 PM

Terrain (Trail) 1:56:00 [2] ***
shoes: MT101

Change of Heart Loop, which is now even longer due to the recent efforts of GORC. One of the few things better than finding a couple miles of excellent new trail is finding such a trail attached to an already good trail that you can run to from your house. Was pretty dark by the time I got back to the powerline, but I managed not to trip over or run into anything.

Saturday Dec 17, 2011 #

6 AM

Terrain (Trail) 2:46:00 [3] ***
shoes: Sabino TR

Increasing pace run on the Greenrock. Ran with the SLUGs from Fox Creek to the entrance to Rockwoods Reservation then turned back as I wasn't looking for a 4-hour run today. Steadily picked up the effort on the way back. Last 20 minutes was quite firm, but not all out as I was afraid I might jack my voice for tomorrow.
6 PM

Note

Most excellent evening devoted to the long overdue celebration with Bill & Laura Langton over the A-meet.

From work to the garage where I picked up my car. It's not fixed, and it won't be as the repair will cost more than what it's worth. Kate has agreed to get by with one vehicle for a while.

Kate's driving me to work today so I can bring in my clothes for the week (we are currently a 1-car family and look to stay that way for a bit). So, I got in a quick barefoot run beforehand. Foot feels fine despite 24 miles on pavement yesterday. So fine!
4 PM

Terrain (Grass) 1:02:00 [2] **

Back home via the powerline. Still very wet.

Wednesday Dec 14, 2011 #

5 AM

Running (Road) 1:06:00 [2]

In to work on roads since I didn't want to gunk up my shoes for this evening's tempo run.
4 PM

Running (Road) 2:16:00 [2]

Decided my legs needed recovery more than a tempo workout, so I made my run home my weekly long pavement run.

Tuesday Dec 13, 2011 #

In to work on the powerline, which was a bit soft due to the rain.
5 PM

Terrain (Grass) 1:04:00 [2] **
shoes: Sabino TR

Back home by which time the powerline was REALLY soft.

Several good news items. First and foremost, the plantar isn't bothering me at all except very first thing in the morning. I'll keep icing and try to get in a few barefoot runs every week to be sure, but it appears that can be managed through this marathon cycle.

The injury to the top of the foot (which I haven't been too worried about, but it is nagging) also seems to be OK, though I can certainly feel it throughout the day. Only real problem is that I can't lace my shoes tight enough to have good control on steep downhills. I lost some time at both Pere Marquette and PTXV on the descents.

In longer-term injury recovery, I ran in and back today with a pack. Not much in it; probably only weighed a couple pounds, but the fact that I could do it all is a big improvement from last summer when the collarbone bump was still too pronounced to support a strap.

And one piece of not so great news. The WRX is dead. Needs to have the exhaust valves replaced and that's going to cost more than the car is worth. Kate was surprisingly open to just being a 1-car family for a while. We'll see how it goes.

Possum Trot XV at Shawnee Mission (1:10). Legs were better than I thought they'd be, but I still got dropped from the lead group on the way to 2. Not sure where I passed everybody, but wound up in 4th, which was a pleasant surprise. Race report to follow.

After a brief break, shadowed Yaya on the "White" course. Way too hard to be a white course; more like yellow with a couple near Orange. Anyway, Yaya got through it with only a little coaching, so that's a cool thing.

Terrain (Trail) 26:00 [2] ***

After breakfast and coffee with Kate and Yaya at the lodge, went for my proper warmup.

Terrain race (Trail) 58:17 [5] *** 7.5 mi (7:46 / mi)
shoes: Oroc 280 (old)

Pere Marquette trail run. Hard to interpret the time as the conditions were fast and they've done a fair bit of trail grooming. Just about everybody ran a PR. But, so did I and my overall place was about what I'd hope for given that this is an early season race for me this year, so I'm calling it a good day. 2nd to Rick Barnes in age group; 15th overall.

Terrain (Grass) 17:00 [2] **

Easy barefoot jog to ice the foot. As Sat evening, the foot is OK for the Trot. The legs, on the other hand...

Friday Dec 9, 2011 #

Finally finished up the 3-hour race report.
11 AM

Terrain (Grass) 34:00 [3] *

Easy jog around the neighborhoods south of 40 from work. Mostly running on people's lawns but also some on the powerline.

Thursday Dec 8, 2011 #

Note
weight:166lbs (rest day)

Took some force of will to take the day completely off as it's beautiful out. Going into the weekend, the G could be better, but I guess it's OK. Foot could be better, but I guess it's OK. Fitness could be better, but I guess it's OK. Conditions could not be better; if this was a late-season race rather than very early season (I usually take my annual break right after PM rather than October as I did this year), I would be shooting for a PR. As it is, I'll be happy to be under an hour which may take the age group if Rick Barnes gets the overall Masters win. No way I'm beating him this year.

As for the Trot, well, it will suck as it did two years ago when it was right after PM. But, it's an odd year, so what did I expect? Fitting that the Curse of the Odd Trot should go right to the end (PT9 being the only exception).

Wednesday Dec 7, 2011 #

11 AM

Terrain (Grass) 52:00 [2] **

Barefoot on the powerline at lunch from work. Most of the grass was fairly warm as the sun was out. Some of the shady spots still had a dusting of snow, so the feet did get the desired icing effect.

Tuesday Dec 6, 2011 #

5 AM

Terrain (Grass) 1:03:00 [2] **
shoes: Sabino TR

In to work on the powerline. Some sort of wierd icy mist coming down, but not uncomfortable. Overcast reflected enough light that I didn't need to turn my headlamp on the whole way. Not a whole lot of spring in the stride this morning. Mostly the trough from Sunday's workout, but I think the Sabino's may have had it, too. They've got over 1000 miles on them and it really felt like running with bricks on my feet. Probably heightened by the fact that most of my recent running has been barefoot or in the 101's (which are pretty close to running barefoot).
7 PM

Running (Track) 54:00 [4]
shoes: Grid A2

4x800@2:56 400R. Well sort of. Took a while to find the pace but finally got it dialed on. To be expected, I suppose as I haven't done a true track workout in quite some time.

Monday Dec 5, 2011 #

4 PM

Terrain (Grass) 1:06:00 [2] *
(rest day) shoes: MT101

Home from work via the powerline with a stop by the store to get hot dog buns for Yaya. Had a fair bit of spring in my stride, which was certainly a nice change from the way I have been feeling.

Pere Marquette finally got around to publishing the seedings for this weekend. I'm 14th, which is not as good as it has been recently (odd given that last year was my best placing ever), but it's still in wave 0 and that's all that matters. Actually, I'm a bit relieved. I was afraid they might seed me in the top 10 and then I'd feel a lot of pressure to do well. I want to break an hour, but if my first couple splits show it won't happen, I'll back offf and try to save my legs for the Trot.

Sunday Dec 4, 2011 #

8 AM

Terrain (Grass) 24:00 [2] **

Not surprisingly, it was a bit tough to get out of bed this morning. Went for an easy barefoot run on the powerline before church.
3 PM

Running (Road) 2:21:00 intensity: (1:21:00 @2) + (1:00:00 @4)
shoes: DS Trainers

IIncludes 6xCC Lake steps@73.

Last I checked, the Boston Marathon was still a road race, so a few long runs on pavement are called for. I'll probably try to get away with just one a week unless the foot problems completely go away (unlikely given the planned mileage).

The hope was to get in some work on longer hills, but time limited me to a run close to home, so the Missouri bluff was my only option. After I got done with the steps, I ran another 10 miles on rolling terrain at a firm, but comfortable pace.

Saturday Dec 3, 2011 #

7 AM

Running (Grass) 1:09:00 [2] **

Barefoot on the powerline to CC Lake, around the soccer fields on the far side of CC Mill Rd and back. Ameren had crews out clearing the powerline. While this is generally a good thing (there's not enough foot traffic to keep the trail open otherwise), their use of rather indiscriminant cutting machines meant there was an awful lot of vegetation pieces on the trail that I really didn't want to step on without shoes. Run was great for the plantar, but both feet are pretty bruised up.
2 PM

Cycling (Road) 1:38:00 [2]
shoes: Bike:Cannondale Road

Easy spin.
6 PM

Note

Rather big night. First the Champagne event at St. Louis WIne market (25 sparkling wines to taste and food from Annie Gunns!) then over to the Holtmann's for the annual post-Castlewood Adventure Race party. Alpine Shop won it this year, so they were all in a fine mood. Very good times, but it made for a mightly late night. Kate left a bit before 11 to pick up Yaya. I drove David home in his at 2:30 even though we had both sobered up because he was too tired to drive. Good to have a night like this once a year. Probably not good to have one much more often than that.
