Running (Road) 40:00 [2]
shoes: DS Trainers

Working from home today. Got out for a mid-morning easy jog round the hood before the thunderstorms arrived. Shorts and singlet weather, but now that the front has gone through, it's going to get cold in a hurry.

OMG, really?!? Sure, yesterday was a quality day, but I didn't expect to be this stiff in the morning. Took the Olive/Delmar/Grand route in to make it as short as possible.

Felt a bit better after moving around some, so I decided to shorten rather than cancel my afternoon session at Babler (1:15). Probably just as well as I didn't get out of work until late and, while I don't think one would get in much trouble for night-O at Babler, it is technically against the rules and I'd hate to damage our excellent relations with the Ranger out there.

Anyway, I decided I'd run the course I'd planned until it was getting too dark and then come back in on trails. I need to practice running trails with a small headlamp anyway to be ready for Kettle Moraine.

Too bad I had no legs, because the southern part of the map seemed more open than the northern part I ran last week. Seems backwards from previous experience. Maybe it was just perception since I wasn't trying to go fast. At any rate, the easy pace helped loosen up my legs and the nav was spot on, so it was a good session. Time includes about 20 minutes running back on trail.

5x500m@2:30-3:00 (not quite I-effort) with equal time recovery on the Castlewood flood plain (1:15).

Decided to check the feasibility of an O session before work. I don't know exactly what civil twighlight means, but I was hoping it correlated with enough light to run full speed through the woods. Wasn't too optimistic when I arrived at Lone Elk at 6:30 and pitch dark. However, by the time I had warmed up, the indicated time (6:48) had passed and there was, in fact, enough light to run full speed through the woods.

Actually doing that was another matter altogether as there was an inordinate amount of clutter on the forest floor. Still a very fine workout and not bad compass practice, either.

Today was also the first real test of the Oroc 280's (yesterday's session was to soft to assess performance). Acceptable grip, but certainly less than either my Jalas or VJ's, especially in the icy areas. They are comfortable, though I'd trade some of that for a stiffer sole. Fit is good; unlike the 340's, these are quite snug in the same size.

On an odd note, they came not only laced, but also tied. I don't ever recall getting a new shoe that was tied in the box. That wouldn't be particularly noteworthy, except that they were tied using the "Secret Swedish Knot." It's like somebody at Inov8 was taught the knot in exchange for silence (as I was), and is trying to get it out by tying all the shoes that way as they leave the warehouse. Further investigation by the nordic branch of Interpol is in order.

Finally, on the feasibility of pre-work O: yes, but why would you want to? By the time the sun comes up, you don't have much time to train (unless you're taking the whole morning off). If it's a night session you're after, you might as well just do it at night., I'm not saying I'll never do it again, just that getting to work two and a half hours later than usual seemed a poor trade for a 1-hour session.
5 PM

Running (Road) 2:05:00 [2]
shoes: DS Trainers

Left the car at work and ran to Great Harvest where I caught the bus (after purchasing a loaf of Popeye Bread). Did a little extra distance in Forest Park to get the time up over 2 hours. Light rain, but just warm enough that it wasn't a problem.

At Queeny (1:10). Wanted to do this midday as I was working from home, but my boss's boss called me just as I was getting ready to log off and that's typically not a call you ignore. Anyway, it was no emergency but it kept me occupied until the end of the day. Ran with a headlamp in case it got too dark, but I didn't need it.

Around routes are almost always preferred at Queeny, but that's not particularly good training, so I stayed close to the redline. Vegetation wasn't too terrible. Some of the really thick stuff has been cleared out by the anti-honeysuckle campaign. Nav was about as good as it's been all year, not that that's saying much. Also felt like I was moving OK through the terrain. 2011 is to be a rebuilding year in terms of O skills, but maybe I'll turn in a decent result or two.

Thursday Dec 23, 2010 #

Note
weight:168lbs (rest day)

Official break begins. No training whatsoever until Tuesday. Given the plans for this weekend and next, probably won't see a sub-170 G for quite some time.

Yet another significant change of plans WRT 2011. The date change on the Grunt takes out the Aslinger 24-hour run. I didn't really want to do that, anyway, I just had it on the calendar because it's necessary if you want to win EMUS. So, with that off, EMUS is off, which frees up a whole lot of schedule since five ultras pretty much nuke the whole year.

New plan is to run Kettle Moraine 100 in June. Given my experience with the Mother Road 100, I think the best way to prep will be to do a nomral marathon program finishing 6 weeks in advance. So, Illinois Marathon is on the sched. Gasp! Repeating a long race! And, a road marathon at that. Well, the no-repeat was just a guideline, not a hard and fast rule. As for marathon training, yeah, it kinda sucks and I said I wouldn't do it again, but boy does it work. I like being fit.

After Kettle, I'll begin my VO2max training, targeting some 5 and 10K's in the fall. Hopefully that fitness will carry through to a top 10 at Pere Marquette.

Orienteering has not been lost in all this. I still plan to do a 24 in August and a few other significant meets:

Gateway Grunt
Flying Pig
Possibly the upstate NY stuff in July/Aug
Possum Trot

And, finally, since our A-meet will have me tied down all fall, I'll make a serious run at the SingleSpeed points title in the Bubba Cyclocross series.

Back home via Midland. Never got anywhere near the predicted 35F, and the headwind made things pretty chilly.

Tuesday Dec 21, 2010 #

5 AM

Cycling (Road) 1:05:00 [2]
shoes: Bike:Felt CX SS

In to work at a very easy pace. My body has really shut down for the year. That's a good thing, it just seems wierd that 10 days ago I was hammering one of my best runs at Pere Marquette and now an easy ride into work seems like a lot.
3 PM

Cycling (Mix) 1:38:00 [2]
shoes: Bike:Felt CX SS

Back home fairly direct except for some putting around in Forest Park. A bit of off-road both in the park and later on the powerline.
7 PM

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 40:00 [2]

Master Lowe's adult class following the kid class and, once again, Yaya was invited to join. She jumped at the chance and did well.

Back home. Grand/Brentwood/Ballas, then a slightly longer route through Conway Park which was much nice than running up Ballas during rush hour. About half on grass.

Note

One final thought on 2011 goals before more or less formally putting them together: I really enjoyed cyclocross this fall. Not sure why I liked it so much more than in the past, but I am already looking forward to prepping for next season. Since VO2Max is a very big part of CX, it fits in fine with my other goals. I'll try to get in a technique workout once or twice a week (most likely in Forest Park as part of my ride home from work) and I'll also do some of my interval training on the bike.
3 PM

Skating (Ice) 47:00 [2]
(rest day)

Queeny rink with Yaya.

Note

Some more random thoughts on goals for next year. Despite the win in the Trot, I think my orienteering has slipped quite a bit. If the Trot had been on a technical map like Knob Noster, I doubt I would have done so well. Also, it's been an awfully long time since I've done a 24-hour and I rather like those. So, I think I'm going to try to stick a bunch of night-O work into my schedule. I don't know if I'll get out every week, but at least a couple times a month. I think night-O is a really efficient way to train map contact because you can't rely so much on distant large features.

Dakota or CNYO seem like the best choices as the actual goal event. Leaning towards Dakota simply because it gives an extra week recovery before Flatlanders. Then again, if I do CNYO, I could combine it with a visit to my parents. Don't need to decide quite yet.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:18:00 [2] ***
20c shoes: Oroc 340

Control picking at Babler (1:15). Very easy pace as I'm not supposed to even be training right now, but I really wanted to be in the woods today. Nav was OK in that I stayed in contact and made no mistakes. Not much flow, though. Part of the problem is that I simply can't read 1:15 on the run anymore. I guess I'm done with Blue courses for good :(

Note
(rest day)

Drove in and came back on the metro: Union Station, Delmar, Olive. Got a massage and then walked the final mile back home. I'm amazed at how many people try to get on the bus with an expired or otherwise bogus transfer. An urban bus driver's job requires considerable skill, but the duties couldn't be less ambiguous:
  1. Drive the bus

  2. Collect the fare

Anybody who can handle the first task isn't likely to stumble on the second.

Tuesday Dec 14, 2010 #

Note

Starting to think about goals for next year. Figured I should do this while I'm still riding the high of my fall results rather than wait until I'm feeling fat and slow in January. Not that it's bad to be fat and slow in Janurary; just that one might be prone to set the bar a bit lower while in that state.

Anyway, the overriding goal is the EMUS (Eastern Missouri Ultra Series) title. Always dicey to use a relative score as the main goal, but I think it's a good combination of what I want to do and how well I can do it. If someone like Tom Whalen decides to go for it, also, then I'll just have to settle for second best.

That goal will drive my competition schedule, but I don't think it will have much impact on my training. I don't really do anything specific for ultras; I have enough base that I just run them the best I can and it seems to work out pretty well.

So the motivator for training next year will be to post a VDOT-56 performance in a road race. I'm currently around 54 and Daniels seems to think you can bump that number 2 points with a targeted training regime. I haven't focused on VO2Max in several years so that should be possible if age doesn't get in the way. To qualify, the race has to be a distance where VO2Max is the limiting factor. So anywhere from an 18-minute 5K to a 62-minute 10mi would work. I'm thinking 10K in 37:30 is probably the most doable performance assuming I can find a good race.

Note

Not sure how long they'll leave it up, but Metro Tri Club has a video clip which explains why I gave up on the hour this year at Pere Marquette as soon as I saw the final descent.
5 AM

Running (Road) 20:00 [2]

In to work via Olive/Delmar/Grand. Thermometer said it was even frostier than yesterday, but the lack of wind made it much more pleasant.
3 PM

Running (Road) 24:00 [2]
shoes: Columbia Switchbacks

Work to Grand Station, Link to Skinker, ran to Big Shark to get a new helmet because my current one has hit too many hard objects this year so I don't trust it anymore, bus to Olive and jog home.
7 PM

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 40:00 [3]

Adult class following Yaya's kid's class. Yaya was asked to join because we had an odd number of students. She felt very honored and did quite well.

Orienteering race (Woods) 59:43 [4] ** 7.9 km (7:34 / km) +165m 6:51 / km
22c shoes: Oroc 340

SLOC Holiday O at Shar Arboretum (1:10). 1hr Score. Didn't think I'd be able to cover 8K after yesterday given how thick the fields were (all the rough open is basically light-medium green in terms of speed). David and I were running pretty much the same course going for the sweep. Some minor splits in the early going on route choice, but we basically ran together. I was a bit faster on the trails, but he was making better time off trail. After the 17th control, we split big as he went south to get my #22. I wanted to leave that as an out and back at the end in case I decided to drop it. Figured I would need four minutes to get back in from there. I got to it in 56:04 and hammered it back for all I was worth. David also got the sweep, but came in a minute later.

Very fun, despite the cold and wind. Followed by the usual pot-luck, which was quite good this year.

Terrain (Trail) 27:00 [2] ***
shoes: Oroc 340

Warmup. No surprise that the overnight rain turned the trail to goop. Went with the O-shoes over the CC Spikes. Actual running conditions weren't that bad; the rain got very light just before I started and, while the temps were in the low 40's, there was hardly any wind.

Terrain race (Trail) 1:00:47 [5] *** 7.8 mi (7:48 / mi) +500m 6:30 / mi
shoes: Oroc 340

Pere Marquette. No hour this year. Trail was slick in spots, and soft everwhere, but I was able to keep a decent pace most of the way. Being in wave zero helped a lot there; David, who was one of the faster runners in wave 1 said it was already getting messy by the time he came through, and that's only a difference of about 20 runners.

Managed to convince myself I still had a chance when I hit the last climb at 46:18 (I've only run the final loop under 14 once, but one plays these games). As a result, I actually set a PR for getting up the final climb. It was all for naught, though. The final descent (which is back down the first climb) was looking pretty much like what you'd expect a soft trail to look like after 600 runners had passed through. It was all I coiuld do to stay upright. Finished 11th. Didn't get Rick Barnes, but since he won Master's overall, I got the prize for 1st M45-49.

Less than hoped for, but really an all around acceptable performance. Followed by some fine times at Grafton Winery with the AR crowd.
5 PM

Note

In happier news, I just right now got an email from Zappos saying they had scored a pair of Oroc280's in my size. A pair, as in 1 pair. They now belong to me.

Cycling (Road) 1:04:00 [2]

In to work at a very mellow pace. Partly because of tomorrow, but mostly because there was a thin layer of frost on the road. Spun my rear wheel twice in the first five minutes and decided I didn't really want to make a third trip to the ER this year.
3 PM

Cycling (Road) 1:50:00 [2]
shoes: Bike:Felt CX SS

Home from work. Prudence dictated taking a more direct route, but it was such a nice afternoon, I was compelled to linger at Forest Park a while. Anyway, it's not like I was hammering the 108 or anything. A little extra spinning in the 62 might even do some good tomorrow. Weather forecast is ugly, which I should be happy about, but I'm really not.

Running (Road) 51:00 [2]
weight:166lbs (rest day) shoes: DS Trainers

In to work via Ballas/Brentwood/Grand. A bit further than I'd like to run on a rest day, so I took it pretty slow.

Metro Tri Club has posted the seeds for Pere Marquette. I'm #11, which was my finish position last year. I've never had a top-10 there. That would certainly be a nice bow on the end of a really fine fall season. Repeating the age group win will be very tough this year: Rick Barnes just turned 45 and Dave Spetnagle is running. Both would normally take me by a minute or so, but it looks like conditions will be soft, which should be in my favor. Might make breaking the hour a bit tough. Should be fun to find out.

I haven't run hard on a trail in some time and don't really want to finish the year with a face plant at Pere Marquette, so I decided to put in some quality time on the Chubb. Lower lot to trailhead then out to the tracks on the Tyson side. Tracks back to the trailhead in 25:03, which is a tad off tempo pace, but close enough for what I wanted to do today. Definitely had to concentrate more on footwork than I normally do, but I kept it upright. Should be fine Saturday.

PT14. Was pretty sure I had the fitness to win, so I went ultra conservative on the nav. Took safe routes, stayed within myself, stopped at the first inkling that things weren't right. As a result, pace was slower than usual, but the nav was relatively clean. Ran the second loop a bit harder since I had been fairly close to all the locations on the first loop, so I was confident I could fix any problems. Skipped 10 and 35. First overall.

Granted, the field was weaker than usual this year. However, I now join Mikell Platt and Mark Everett as a multiple winner of this event. It's a pretty fine day when you have something in common with those two.

OK Sprint. Not really that cold, but a crazy howling wind had me pretty locked up at the start. Had a lot of trouble punching at the first couple controls because my hands were so cold. Was OK after that. Didn't want to run too hard since I still wasn't really sure how much I'd have for the Trot tomorrow. Legs felt OK, but better safe than sorry. One stupid boom at #2, everything else was fine. Finished 3rd overall, 1st M45+.

In to work - very easy pace. Tried something new today; picked up the link at Clayton. It doesn't save any time (total time in was 3 minutes faster than usual), but it certainly does mitigate the cold. Got to the station in 37 minutes, which is about the time I'm usually feeling pretty miserable riding in mid-20's temps. Warmed up a bit on the train and the last mile in from Grand was obviously no big deal.
