Monday May 31, 2010 #

7 AM

Running (Mix) 47:00 [2]
shoes: 2140 White

Easy jog round my Sister-in-law's house. A bit more than half on grass, but I won't take credit for a terrain run because it was all short and relatively smooth.

Sunday May 30, 2010 #

7 AM

Running (Mix) 2:14:00 intensity: (1:50:00 @2) + (24:00 @4) 17.0 mi (7:53 / mi)
shoes: 2140 White

Parkland to CMI airport and back. About a third of the run on grass; the rest was farm roads. Finished with 8 striders.

Saturday May 29, 2010 #

4 PM

Running (Road) 1:32:00 [2]
shoes: 2140 White

To Urbana and back through the UI campus. Pretty hot.

Friday May 28, 2010 #

8 AM

Terrain (Grass) 30:00 [2]
(rest day)

Morning barefoot run around Parkland College. Looks like they've had a lot less rain in Champaign, because the ground was really hard.
4 PM

Running (Road) 1:12:00 [2]

Well, it was supposed to be a rest day, but after spending the day on the phone trying to coordinate various work start dates I felt I needed a run to blow off some steam.

Thursday May 27, 2010 #

6 AM

FatTire (Trail) 1:14:00 [2]
weight:170lbs shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

Easy morning spin at CC Lake. Trails were in remarkably good shape - I never would have guessed we had a thunderstorm just 12 hours earlier. Maybe things are finally drying out.
3 PM

Cycling (Road) 1:35:00 [2]
shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

To Big Shark and back to use their shock pump; the shock on the Kona seemed a bit soft. Doesn't count about half an hour of job related calls that came in during the ride.

Here's how it's shaking out so far:

Modertatly long-term contract starts July 6. Not so great that I'd have to wait another month, but it's a good job. A different short term job probably would have been offered but I told them I'd have to finish in time to take the longer one and they want to implement in late July. Then there's the job I really want, but I still have another round of interviews for that one, so I won't know until the end of next week. Not sure I can keep the one in the hand that long.

Finally, another headhunter called and was really annoying. The position sounded familiar so I asked him where the contract was, hoping I could politely tell him I'd already been submitted. Indeed, it was one that I'm already in the running for though I don't think I'll get it because they're looking for someone more junior (read, cheaper). Then he gets all worked up claiming he's got the inside line on this one and he can get me the rate I want. And I'm wondering what part of "I'm already submitted" he's struggling with. Finally, I just hung up on him. I had hoped the downturn had gotten rid of most of these bottom feeders who just have no sense of professional ethics, but apparently a few of them are still hanging on.

10 AM

Paddling (Canoe) 44:00 [2]

Castlewood beach to the "islands" (which were completely underwater) and back with Brad Baum up front. Not sure if the river will drop enough next week for us to actually have a paddle leg for Conquer Castlewood, but if it does, I think we'll be ready.

FatTire (Trail) 1:13:00 [3]
shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

Then rode some trails together, including a hot lap of the Conquer Castlewood loop 8:43 up (!!) and 5:34 down for a PR of 14:17. That will surely be fast enough. The question is, can I do it the day after Berryman?
1 PM

Note

Quite a few developments on the job front in the last 24 hours. Had one interview this afternoon and lined up two more for tomorrow morning. Also got a call back from one I've been keeping warm for a while. It's entirely possible I could have anywhere from 1 to 4 decent offers by the end of the week. Then again, it could all fall apart, but at least there is some real interest being shown.

Tuesday May 25, 2010 #

6 AM

Terrain (Road) 24:00 [2]

Barefoot on the powerline.
7 AM

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 20:00 [2]

Morning practice with Yaya. Followed by about 20 minutes on the tandem, but I was soft-pedalling, so I won't log it.
11 AM

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 30:00 [3]

Midday class with Yaya.
3 PM

FatTire (Trail) 1:09:00 [2]
shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

Short loop of Lost Valley plus the out & back. Rode easy (serious work planned for tomorrow), concentrating on technique. Basically, the same idea as Sunday where I would re-ride a section as much as needed to get through it. Such discipline turned out to be quite unneccessary as I got through the whole ride with no dabs, unless one counts shouldering the bike through one particularly muddy section for fear that I'd be damaging the trail. I guess the moral of the story is that I should be riding the Chubb a lot more than I am because every other trail in the county is pretty easy by comparison. The difference between training that's fun and training that actually accomplishes something, I suppose.

Monday May 24, 2010 #

6 AM

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 20:00 [2]

Morning practice with Yaya. Not quite sure why she decided to get up at 6:10.
9 AM

FatTire (Trail) 1:57:00 [4]
shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

Trails at CC Lake including hot laps of the CC Lake Test Loop (CCLTL) at 19:54(PR!) and 19:43(PR!!) with 15:00 recovery.
4 PM

Cycling (Road) 34:00 [2]
shoes: Bike: Redline tandem

Fairly stiff pace with Yaya. Super hot & humid.

Running (Road) 25:00 [2]
shoes: 2140 White

Quick shoe change then easy jog round the hood.

Sunday May 23, 2010 #

5 AM

Terrain (Trail) 2:12:00 [2]
shoes: Trail Attack 6

Didn't sleep particularly well and the appearance of a 6-year-old girl who had a nightmare at 4:30AM convinced me that I should just go ahead and get up. Just as well as it was already uncomfortably hot & humid when I stepped out the door before dawn. Ran Change of Heart at a relaxed pace. Met John Brenner along the way and had a nice chat with him. He gave me some much needed encouragement on the job search before we turned the conversation to happier topics.
8 AM

Cycling (Road) 22:00 [2]
shoes: Bike: Redline tandem

After a short break, went out on the tandem (now with fat tires and the 52" gear) with Yaya. Legs had already shut down and even with the little gear, I was glad Yaya was in the mood to push on the hills.
6 PM

FatTire (Trail) 1:05:00 [2]
shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

Flint Quarry - Chubb - Lower Connector. And the locals say, "What? An hour to do that loop?" Catch was that I forced myself to ride all of it clean. I need to get better at rock, so I decided I might as well start in the deep end. Took several attempts on some sections, but I did manage to get through it all.

Saturday May 22, 2010 #

11 AM

Mapping (Woods) 4:00:00 [1] ***
shoes: Salomon XA

I forgot to change the date of the SLOC meet on my calendar, so Yaya and I spent the early part of the morning hunting around Forest Park for O signs. Finally called Anna to find out my mistake. We decided to go to the zoo for a bit since we were already there. Then out to CR for some more white woods. Should be able to finish up the fieldwork in another day or so, but I've still got a ton of cartography to get to.
5 PM

FatTire (Trail) 2:17:00 [2]
shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

Trails at CC Lake. Paved path around the lake is still underwater, so had to take roads over and back instead of the powerline.

Friday May 21, 2010 #

5 AM

Terrain (Grass) 24:00 [2]

Barefoot on the powerline. Really goopy after yesterday's rain.
7 AM

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 20:00 [2]

Morning practice with Yaya who was particularly well disposed today.

Cycling (Road) 25:00 [2]
shoes: Bike: Redline tandem

Then we did some riding. Later in the morning, we also went out on individual bikes. While not fast enough to log as training, it's getting close. She's really picked up the pace since getting her new bike a few weeks ago.
3 PM

Cycling (Road) 2:07:00 [2]
shoes: Bike:Redline Mono

Easy spin, though I've still got the 63" gear on there so it I had to work a bit to keep the cadence where I wanted it. Got a flat 1/2 mile from home so I guess that's my cue to pop the CX tires off, change the gear, and get it ready for summer trail riding.

Thursday May 20, 2010 #

7 AM

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 20:00 [2]
weight:170lbs

Morning practice with Yaya. Woke up very stiff - probably a reaction to jamming it in the TT position (which I obviously haven't used in a while). With the weather iffy, I decided to take a day off from mapping.
11 AM

Running (Road) 43:00 [2]
shoes: 2140 White

Easy jog round the hood. Not quite as stiff as earlier.
4 PM

Note

May have to bail on this local contract I've been holding out for. It's a great job, but the start date keeps getting moved back. Now looking at mid-June which means the Rocky Mountain races ain't gonna happen. I was rather looking forward to those.

On a related note, I've had plenty of time to think about life priorities these last couple months and there may be some big changes ahead. I've got plenty more to say, but my throughts aren't sufficiently organized yet.

Wednesday May 19, 2010 #

8 AM

Mapping (Woods) 6:00:00 [1]
shoes: Salomon XA

Slightly earlier start today since I wanted to get in a longer workout in the afternoon.
3 PM

Cycling (Road) 1:41:00 [4]
shoes: Bike: Redline tandem

8x1@2:05-2:15 equal time recovery on the River Valley flats. Relatively consistent efforts, but the gusty wind moved the splits around a bit. The bike felt super wierd after being off it (and any other road bike for that matter) for so long. Reasonably happy with how quickly we made freinds again. Practiced looking up, even though that's not really necessary on River Valley Rd; it will be at Highland next weekend. On the way back I hit a few small hills and did some bike handling work.

Running (Road) 34:32 [3] 5.1 mi (6:46 / mi)
shoes: DS Trainers

Quick shoe change and right into a marathon pace run. Spent the first mile wondering what it was I liked so much about duathlons, but felt OK after that.
6 PM

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 20:00 [2]

Pre-dinner practice with Yaya.

Tuesday May 18, 2010 #

6 AM

Terrain (Grass) 23:00 [2]

My feet have really been hurting a lot lately. I think they've gotten weak, so I'm going to start doing more barefoot runs. I ran everywhere barefoot until I was 16 (mostly on city streeets), but haven't done a whole lot of it since. In a rare show of restraint, I settled for three easy miles on the powerline rather than delaminating my feet with a longer run on the first go.
7 AM

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 20:00 [2]

Morning practice with Yaya.
9 AM

Mapping (Woods) 5:00:00 [1] ***
shoes: Salomon XA

White woods at CR.
4 PM

Cycling (Road) 1:37:00 [2]
shoes: Bike:Redline Mono

Easy spin over to CC Lake only to find that the lake has come up another six inches so now big portions of the bike path are submerged - in some spots, the bottom bracket was underwater. Also includes about 10 minutes on the TT bike at the end of the ride to make sure it's still functioning after an entire year of not being raced.
6 PM

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 30:00 [2]

Family class with Yaya. I was getting pretty tired by this point and didn't really try very hard.

5 PM

Cycling (Road) 1:06:00 [2]
shoes: Bike:Redline Mono

When I got back from mapping, the rain had stopped. Unhithced the tandem and rode a few errands on the Redline. I was a little dismayed at that, even with no Yaya on the back, there still seemed to be an awful lot of resistance for a 52" gear and fully-inflated cyclocross tires. Finally hopped off to look and, sure enough, I never switched the gear back from the CX race last fall. It's currently 63". That didn't make the pedals any easier to turn, but at least I wasn't depressed about it.

11 AM

Running (Road) 2:19:00 [2] 18.2 mi (7:38 / mi)
shoes: 2140 White

Went to bed with my feet screaming at me and they were not any happier this morning. This isn't unusual - I rarely wake without some body part making a fuss; in fact, that's one of the reasons I get up so early - it just hurts too much to stay in bed. I'm pretty good at telling the difference between old injuries, old age, and something new that I need to worry about, but I wasn't sure what to make of the feet. My guess is that they didn't like spending nearly two hours running and standing around in the racing flats. Fortunately, by the time I got back from church, they were feeling much better, but I still wanted a soft surface option. With all the trails gooped from three straight days of rain, I decided on Low Plains Drifter for my long run because most of the route has the alternative of running on the grass alongside the road/path.

CC Lake is as high as I've ever seen it. Not sure if they're asleep at the switch at the dam or if they're trying to mitigate the levels on the Missouri (which has much of the St. Charles riverfront submerged right now. Some of the bike path was underwater, but I was able to splash through no problem. Waterworks Rd was not flooded, so I didn't have to re-route the second half of the run. About the time of that happy surprise, my legs went away. Since I was already running 7:30's, the usual remedy of hitting the gas wasn't realy an option. Decided to daydream and let them do what they wanted for a few miles and by the time I got back to CC Lake everything was functioning again. Got back on the 7:30's for the last 40 minutes of the run. Good workout. I think it's easier to hold a firm pace on a long run the day after a short race because you've reset your expectations for discomfort considerably.
4 PM

Cycling (Road) 25:00 [2]
shoes: Bike: Redline tandem

Around the hood with Yaya. Legs were completely off. I think she was actually pushing me for much of the ride.

Saturday May 15, 2010 #

11 AM

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 45:00 [3]

Yaya bailed on morning practice. We got through stretches but she was just out of it as soon as we started working technique. Sometimes it's hard to remember she's only 6. I tried not to get too worked up over it.

Attended adult class. I was the only non black belt in the class, so Master Lee just had me hang in the whole time as best I could. Made for a better and longer workout than usual.
5 PM

Running (Road) 43:00 [2]
shoes: Grid A2

Jogging along with Yaya while she did the Ferguson 1-mile in a credible 13:11. I believe this is the farthest she's ever run continuously. We typically walk a fair bit of the O courses and I'm sure she and her friend were goofing around most of the time they were out on the 3-mile course 2 weeks ago.

Then a proper warmup for my race.

Running race (Road) 18:47 [5] 5.0 km (3:45 / km)
ahr:177 max:183 shoes: Grid A2

Ferguson 5K. Big River Running handled the course and timing, so I'm confident the distance was spot on. Pretty pleased with this for a no-taper run off nothing but base miles, and not a whole lot of base miles, at that. Course was fairly flat, small inclines in the first and third mile. Splits were even adjusting for terrain: 6:04, 5:58, 6:09. Fifth overall, 1st M40+ in a surprisingly large field for a community run (around 600, I believe).

Running (Road) 15:00 [2]

Warmdown.

Friday May 14, 2010 #

7 AM

Tae Kwon Do (technique) 20:00 [2]

Morning practice with Yaya.
2 PM

Running (Road) 38:00 [2]
shoes: DS Trainers

Off and on showers all day didn't seem like the best mapping weather and I really do need to get a job that pays actual money. So, I stayed home and trolled the net for out of town assignments just in case the local one I'm in line for doesn't work out. Went for an early afternoon jog round the hood at a pace that was firmer than it should have been given that I'm racing tomorrow. Felt good, though, and it's not like I really care about tomorrow's race; just trying to get some indicator of fitness.
6 PM

Cycling (Road) 22:00 [2]

On the tandem with Yaya.

Thursday May 13, 2010 #

6 AM

Running (Road) 1:36:00 [2]
weight:171lbs shoes: 2140 White

Yaya decided she wanted to race this Saturday rather than trying to both a running and O race on the same day next weekend. So, I'll be doing a 5K which means the real long run gets moved to Sunday. Went for an easy 12-miler around CC Lake.

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 20:00 [2]

Then rolled Yaya out of bed for morning practice.
11 AM

Mapping (Woods) 5:00:00 [1] ***

Then some more white woods at CR. May have the fieldwork wrapped by end of next week.

1 PM

Running (Road) 1:13:00 [2]

Final 4 hours of the trip was uneventful, if a tad wet. Back in STL, the weather was merely warm, but the 70F dew point and the stiffness of 900 miles in the car had me none to enthused to run. Felt OK after the first 15 minutes, but still deferred the long run to tomorrow.

Tuesday May 11, 2010 #

6 AM

Running (Road) 43:00 [2]
shoes: 2140 White

Jogged over to Carol's memorial stone to pay my respects. Threw in 6 striders on the way back.
10 AM

Note

Trip back was some of the whackier weather I've experienced in a single day. It was just above freezing for my morning run with the remnants of a fairly hard frost still visible. Warmed to 50F by the time we left and stayed there through the Southern Tier. Once into the Alleghaney's, the temperature plummeted and by Kane we were in a full-on snow storm. I don't think it amounted to much, but it was enough to turn everything white. Fortunately, the road didn't freeze, so the big tires on the Magnum weren't put to the test. Not sure how well 3-season 22's would do on a mountain road in the snow and I'd just as soon not find out. Down the other side to the Ohio border things warmed dramatically and by Columbus, it was 75F and sunny. Drove on to Indianapolis.

Mapping (Woods) 3:00:00 [1] ****

More mapping of Annie's Farm with Annie. Really complex terrain compared to what I'm used to mapping and the base map doesn't show half of it. I'm in over my head on this one, but at least it's a tiny area and it's not like we're going to use it for an A-meet. Great learning opportunity - I hope I can get some decent folks to run on it when I'm done and get some feedback.

Sunday May 9, 2010 #

6 AM

Running (Trainer) 30:00 [3]
shoes: 2140 White

Woke for my pre-Mother's Day brunch run to cold rain and a ripping wind with a just touch of ice and snow mixed in for good measure. Made the hotel exercise room look oddly appealing. Did a short interval workout on the treadmill.
2 PM

Mapping (Woods) 2:00:00 [1] ***
shoes: Trail Attack 6

Preliminay survey of Annie's Farm with Annie and Dad. (Left Kate and Mom indoors as it was still pretty cold and windy - but at least the rain and snow had stopped). Great area which could be connected to a much larger map (of a much less interesting parcel of state forest). Annie and I will map as much of it as we can tomorrow.

Saturday May 8, 2010 #

10 AM

Terrain (Trail) 57:00 [2]
shoes: Trail Attack 6

Trails at Buttermilk. Last bit of the loop around Treman Lake was closed due to "dangerous conditions" which probably meant there was a 1-square-inch patch of ice somewhere. So, I couldn't finish the loop and had to run the last mile back in on the highway. Probably an order of magnitude more dangerous than the trail, but still well below my threshold for unsafe activities.

Friday May 7, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Not particularly restful, as most of the day was spent completing the drive to Ithaca. Spent the balance of the day with Mom & Dad and worked on the base map for Annie's Farm. One could argue that the last thing I need is another mapping project right now, but after a month in CR's ridge and valley, I think I can be excused in taking an interest in this:

Dropped Lu Dog off at a friend of Kate's in South County who will watch her during our trip. Hit Castlewood on the way back. Worked on endurance technique - that is, getting over everything smoothly with no big spikes in output. Really nice day.

Left for Ithaca late afternoon and drove way into the night.

CR section 18a. Finished up section 18 (aborted due to gnats) and also checked a few adjacent areas. Gnats are still pretty bad, but not nearly like 2 weeks ago. Took a tip from the web and put vanilla on my face. It really does work, but only for the time it takes to evaporate which isn't very long when it's 80F. Got hit with a hail storm mid-afternoon and that sent them running for cover at least for a little while.

Sunday May 2, 2010 #

Note

I believe this is the first week since my 20's where I exceeded 20 hours of regular training (not races or mapping, just real workouts). Of course, it's also been about that long since I haven't had a regular job and there's an obvious correlation.
5 AM

Terrain (Trail) 2:04:00 [2]
shoes: Icebugs

Change of Heart at sunrise except that I dropped the southern out & back (which kinda invalidates the name) in favor of checking out the new section of trail. More of the same, which is not a bad thing: follows the contour just above where the ridge gets steep and has one interesting ditch crossing. Legs were sluggish and when I got back to the lower section of the park, the 40-minute trip home on gravel and grass seemed dismal. Tried my usual remedy when I get sick of a long run, which is to get on the gas a bit, and it had the usual positive result.

FatTire (Trail) 2:19:00 [3]

... for Specialized Demo Days. Rode an Epic 29'er for about half an hour and the Kona for the remaining time. The Epic is a great bike for sure and the 29" wheels seem to have fixed the old version's predilication for throwing it's pilot over the bars (the Specialized rep admitted that this was a common complaint, so it wasn't just me). However, I rode several sections of trail full-on and found that the times were no different (as in, often the same to the second for a several-minute section) between that and the Kona. No doubt the rear suspension would be a blessing if one was on trail for another few hours but, I only ride that long in a few races a year. I don't need another $5,000 garage trophy that only gets raced twice a year. The TT bike is filling that void quite nicely.

Running race (Road) 19:07 [4] 3.0 mi (6:22 / mi)
ahr:164 max:171 shoes: Grid A2

Ross Elementary Fun Run. Google maps agrees with the advertised distance, but I forgot to charge my Forerunner, so I don't know for sure. Seems about right. Figured in a school this size there would be at least one dad who was a serious runner. There was, me. By half a mile in it was obvious that this wasn't really going to be much of a race. Rather than turning myself inside out to get a time on a hilly course of dubious measurement, I decided to turn it into a tempo run. I'll find another race to get a baseline on.

Running (Road) 15:00 [2]
shoes: Grid A2

Sort-of warmdown.

Got in and was surprised that Yaya hadn't finished the 1-mile yet. Some of the milers had missed the turnaround and continued on the 3-mile course before being sent back another way so I ran that route backwards and still couldn't find her. Increasingly concerned, I got into a patrol car with one of the police marshalling the course and we searched for a while. Finally found her about 2 miles into the 3-mile course. She and one of her classmates had decided to switch to the longer course. All well and good, but it would have been nice if they told us that. Anyway, they were getting tired and the prospect of a short ride in a cop car was enough to get them to call it a day. Yaya was in the front seat and got to hit the siren a couple times.

We got a lot less rain than predicted last night, so I decided to see how the trails at CC Lake had fared. Decent shape except for some wet spots on the section built last month which isn't completely packed in. The really new section (built this morning) had no tire marks on it and I took that to mean that the GORC crew felt the ground was too soft to ride it in. I respected that and left it alone. I'll check it out on foot tomorrow.
