7 AM

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 20:00 [2]

Morning practice with Yaya.
4 PM

FatTire (Trail) 1:09:00 [3]
shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

Absolutely perfect conditions. And I don't just mean the weather. As of 3PM, I had no job, so of course it's a great time to hit the trails. Felt pretty good, so I tried to break 20 minutes on the old loop at CC Lake. Didn't quite make it; but 20:38 is only 10 seconds off my PR, so it was a good go for this time of year. Meanwhile, GORC has further extended the trail. I't's very close to being a full fledged loop.
6 PM

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 30:00 [3]

Family class with Yaya.

Orienteering (Park) 33:00 [2] ***
14c shoes: Trail Attack 6

While Yaya was at sparring class, I did a sprint course using the base map at Faust (1:5). Took it easy; a quite fitting finish for a pleasant, if not particularly well executed March Mapness.

7 AM

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 20:00 [2]

Morning practice with Yaya, who was back to her usual self. Meaning, of course, that after practice and breakfast she decided to be extra helpful and prune the hedges in front of the house. It will be several years before they look good again.
3 PM

Orienteering (Woods) 1:18:00 [4] ***
21c shoes: Jalas Black

Hill intervals at Forest 44. First warm quality workout of the year. The first couple were true misery. Felt better after that until the 7th uphill (of 11). Things were pretty grim after that.

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 20:00 [2]

Mornning practice a little later than usual. Yaya wasn't feeling it this morning, so I sent her back to bed for some more sleep.
3 PM

Cycling (Road) 1:04:00 [2]
shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

Over to Queeny and back.

Orienteering (MTB) 39:00 [2] ***
24c shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

Woke up this morning with my feet telling me in no uncertain terms that running on rock was not a good plan for today. WIth all the flood plain venues underwater right now, that pretty much left Queeny. Not a particularly great place to run, but an excellent bike-O area. Rode a bike-O course from 1999 which included a couple nasty bikewhacks.

Note

Whacky moment of the day seemed like a slam dunk. On the way home I'm cutting through St. Louis Abbey as I typically do when coming from the south during rush hour. It lops off a busy and boring stretch of Mason and if the monks mind, they certainly don't show it; I usually get a freindly smile and wave. Then I'm passed by a F350. Gloss black, dubs, cab pipes, the ubiquitous naked lady mud flaps, and a Judas Priest bumper sticker. Not sure what sort of meditiation this guy was headed for, but I think it was a bit different from what I was taught in Chatechesis.

But no! I've barely managed to wrap my head around that one when I step inside the house and Yaya proclaims: "I am a great and honesty cowboy man, and I always stay with my herd." WTF?!?!?!

Orienteering (Woods) 2:17:00 [2] ***

Part of the 3-hour course at Meremac (1:15) from a few years back.

Heading west was definitely the right call today. By St. Clair, the cold rain had given way to partly cloudy and by the time I got to Meremac, it was a crisp blue sky and warm enough that I would have gone in short sleeves if I had any intention of pace.

However, pace was not on the agenda today, unless qualified by "very slow". Legs needed a break after a surprisingly stout performance yesterday. Instead, I worked on the skill that has been my downfall in many a 24-hour event: staying focused when not on the gas. Did a pretty good job. A couple minor errors, but none attributable to daydreaming. And it was a day for dreaming - perfect conditions.

Beaumont (1:10) Yellow course with Yaya. Legit Yellow course, so it was way too hard for her. We talked through each leg looking at the map and then I'd recite the route back to her as we walked. I offered her a chance to bail at #8, but she surprised me by insisting she wanted to finish. Good time for both of us.

Map.
10 AM

Orienteering race (Woods) 55:52 [4] *** 6.7 km (8:20 / km) +325m 6:43 / km
15c shoes: Jalas Black

Red course at Beaumont (1:10). Legs were back which was a good thing as Dave Fisher did nothing to spare us from the terrain. One of my better runs lately, though one must put a clean run on this map in perspective. Technical, it ain't. Still, nice to match up good nav with good legs for a change. Frei wasn't there, so Bill was the only one keeping me honest. He was slower than I would have thought. We'll have to look at splits to see if it was just a few bad routes or if there really was that much speed difference.

Map; with routes.

Beautiful day, so I slipped out for some midday practice at Laumeier (1:5). Legs were a bit off.

To run the Emmenegger Test Loop (1:10) at a very un-test-loop velocity. Was pushing OK by the end, but definitely softer than it should have been.
6 PM

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 45:00 [2]

Adult class. Was ranking student in a very small class, so got a little extra time on the floor.

Thursday Mar 25, 2010 #

Note

Feet are a bit torn up from the two long sessions in the woods. No blisters, but a couple hot spots. Since it was raining today, I decided that keeping them dry and letting them heal up was more important than March Mapness. The day wasn't completely devoid of map work, however. I spent about an hour deciding how I was going to carve up Cuivre River. My original plan was to simply map from north to south, but I think instead I'll hit the areas where the vegetation needs a complete remap (about 7 days worth of mapping) and then if I do manage to find a real job in mid-April, I'll have the critical stuff done. Fixing contours and trails can be done any time of year if need be.
7 AM

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 35:00 [2]
weight:177lbs

Morning practice with Yaya and then some separate work on my new form.
6 PM

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 30:00 [2]

Family class with Yaya. A bunch of new students so we went kinda slow.

Wednesday Mar 24, 2010 #

Orienteering (Woods) 4:24:00 [2] ***
140c shoes: Salomon XA

Planned another 200-control loop to finish off the vegetation appraisal at Cuivre River (1:15). It was a bit warm and after about 4 hours I really felt like I was losing my focus. Since getting the vegeation right is the whole point of this remap, I decided to call it a day rather than press on when my head wasn't in it.

Note

One shouldn't look a gift horse in the teeth, but these weren't really a gift, I won 'em fair and square. I don't think the Salomon's are going to work for me. They're not terrible, but the fit just isn't right. I'll try them on trail and see if they work OK there but they aren't workin' for me off trail. Oddly, they seem to pick up more junk inside as well. I don't know why that would be; the uppers come up just as far as any other shoe I have. Maybe the lacing system doesn't hold the collar as tight. Anyway, if I win CC again (big if this year given that it's the day after the Berryman 12-hour), I think I'll trade the shoes for something else.

Powerline is still slop, but the warm sun did a great job of drying out the singletrack at CC Lake. Perfect conditions. Still at base pace, but the hardest I've pedalled since since last fall. Fun stuff.

Orienteering (Park) 14:00 [2] ***

A bit bogus, but ran a quick sprint course at CC Lake (1:5) in my MTB shoes to get in my March quota.

Went to Alpine Shop to finally collect my prize from last year's Conquer Castlewood (they didn't have any size-13 Salomon shoes when I last needed trail runners). Then went over to Kirkwood Park (1:3750) to break them in by running an old score-O course. Made the course a bit longer by taking the controls in numeric order rather than optimal route.

Shoes are OK. Unless they are super durable (they might be - the construction seems top shelf), it would be hard to justify the premium over competing models. Can't argue with free, though.

Cold rain, soft ground, and dead legs didn't sound like a recipe for fun in the woods, but this is March, so out to Rocwoods (1:15) for 2 control picking courses at a firm, but slightly below competition pace. Includes short warmup, warmdown, and an easy long leg between courses.

Actually caught a huge break on the conditions. Despite the radar showing a pretty solid band of yellow moving in from the south, the rain let up just as I got started and didn't start again until I was back at the parking lot.

Legs were good for the first course, but the second had more climb and the last 2 days caught up to me. Nav was good; not great. Overall, better (and much more enjoyable) than I expected.

Orienteering (Woods) 5:53:00 [2] ***
202c shoes: Trail Attack 6

Yes, really, 202 controls at Cuivre River (1:15).

Because this is such a large area, I'm concerned that the vegetation will drift over the time I'm mapping it. Therefore, I decided I'd do a "snapshot" run. Basically went to every point and recorded the vegetation at that point. When I go back to do the real mapping, I'll have nearby reference points to make sure I'm staying consistent. Will do the same thing in the south half of the park next week.

Slower than competition pace, obviously given the distance, but fast enough to get a real read on the densitiy at each point. Of course, many were no brainers ("there it is 200m away - I'm thinking white woods"), but I adjusted by a shade at about 30 points and another dozen simply bear no resemblance to the map, so they'll have to be redone from scratch.

The unfortunate revelation of the run was that Eric Weyman was right - the contours at CR really aren't very good. I don't know why I haven't noticed that before. I guess I always use big feature navigation there, so it just hasn't been an issue. Anyway, I'm hoping I can find some LIDAR data, because adjusting 20KM^2 of contours by hand is going to take a really long time.

Running (Track) 45:00 [3]

Jogging over to the track, 5x200@42 200R to warm up, and jogging back reeeeeeeally slow.

Running race (Track) 10:35 [5] 3.0 km (3:32 / km)
shoes: Grid A2

US Team 3K Time Trial. Not sure why I thought this would be fun and it's not like I'm in any danger of being named to the team.

A bit better than I expected. Conditions were warm and windy, but not really a factor. Since I haven't done any VO2Max work lately, I just figured I'd take it out at 85s laps and stop when I puked or hit 3K. Reached both at about the same time as it turned out. Struggled near the end of the 2nd K running into the wind, then pushed too hard to get the time back, and was all over the place the last 800. Managed a slight pickup with the wind at my back for the last 200 and emptied my gut on the far side of turn 1.

Note

After that, I didn't have the stomach (pun intended) for doing any map work. One day off for March Mapness won't kill me and I'll make up for it tomorrow for sure.

Sprint course at McDonnell Park (1:5) plus some random running around. It would be a fair bit of work to bring this map up to sprint standards, but I think it might be worth it. Interesting venue if the vegetation is spot on.

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 15:00 [2]

Old red course at Babler (1:15). Easy pace since hammering the climbs and hopping over and under vegetation is not the best therapy for back problems. Goal for workout was 100% map contact. Almost made it, but got distracted running down a spur and for a little while couldn't have told you exactly how far I was. Didn't cost me any because I could just bail early to the stream below to make sure I didn't miss my attack point, but it violated the spirit of the workout. One lapse in 85 minutes is pretty good for me, so I count it a good session.

Map hike with Yaya at Powder Valley (1:7.5). Hiked the main loop, picking out features on the map and then identifiying them in the terrain. A bit sad that here we have a 15-year-old map that is still an excellent representation of this pretty little parcel, yet we've only done one meet here and will likely never do another because of the wierd usage rules at Powder Valley. Meanwhile, the Cliff Cave map, which we use constantly and was generally thought of as being pretty good when I did it in 2005 for IC Champs is already hopelessly out of date.

Note

Nice evening with Bill, Mark, and their families to celebrate the A-meet. As usual, Bill shamed me on the wine, presenting a 1996 Norman Cab just as I was popping the cork on a $9 Cava.

A fair bit of interesting stuff that didn't show up well on the aerials. LaNDO (Late Night Drunken O) might actually require some navigation skill this year.

Gateway Grunt at Hawn (1:15). Really glad we structured the meet so I'd be free to run this one, because it was just about as fine a race as I've ever participated in. Excellent course set by Bill, another bright, cool day, and, the great terrain at Hawn.

Didn't bother warming up because I knew I wouldn't have the legs to hang with the leaders. Was a bit shocked to find myself all the way back around 20th place at the first control, though. Good nav carried the day and I managed to run clean enough to get 5th overall. More to follow.

Wasn't at all upset when Bill told me control pickup was covered. I'm whupped.

Perfect time of year to be using Kennedy Woods; the straight routes would be taken out of play by vegetation any later and the ground would be mush any earlier. Now there are real decisions to be made and I think the map gives you what you need to get it right.

Probably shouldn't have run so hard with a cold, but it sure was fun.

What better way to kick off March Mapness than some time at Hawn (1:10). Hung a few controls and also checked out the vegetation along a few legs where it could be a factor.

Good news is that, while it hurts, the toe doesn't hurt enough to indicate that it's busted. Bad news is that I have a cold. Odd, since I've been getting plenty of sleep and really don't come in contact with many folks working from home.
