Running (Road) 25:00 [2]

Over to the race from home and then some shuffling around the start area. A couple 30-second strides thrown in.

Running (Road) 20:22 [5] 5.0 km (4:04 / km) +95m 3:43 / km
ahr:175 max:183

St. Monica's 5K. Fun little race held less than two miles from my house, so it seemed like as good a opportunity as any to put out a long-overdue maximal effort. Hot, humid, and the course didn't have a single 100m stretch of flat ground, so the time is pretty meaningless, but I think I'm probably about a minute off where I'd like to be right now. Heartrate splits (173@1mi, 179, 183) would indicate the pacing was pretty good.

The first bit was slightly downhill, so I actually had the pleasure of leading the race for a while. That fantasy didn't last long as Christen Moore blew by me on the first climb. Well, if you're going to get smoked by a girl, at least make it a really fast girl. Christen was using this as her last tuneup before Triathlon World's next weekend. Ended up finishing fifth, first in 40+. That says more about the quality of the field than about me, but it was still fun to be a big fish, even if the pond was very small.

Running (Road) 36:00 [2]

Running home carrying a trophy seemed retarded so, since they were obviously not going to do awards for a while anyway, I ran home and got my pack and then ran back. Then I ran back home with the trophy in the pack.

Cycling (Road) 2:10:00 [2]

Attended Kevin Hunsel's 40th birthday party in St. Charles with Kate and Baby-O. As I expected, I ate and drank enough there that the prospect of yet another party in the late afternoon (one of Baby-O's friends turning 5), was not at all appealing. So I let them go and rode my bike home hitting the cobbles on Main Street, the climb of Caulks Hill (on which the 23-tooth cog was called into service for the first time this year), and Great Harvest to get a loaf of Cinnamon Chip bread for french toast tomorrow morning.

All in all, so fine!

Running (Road) 49:00 [2]
weight:171lbs

In to work, taking the bus to Forest Park Station. Took a long time to hit stride and the pack felt very heavy even though it was only 5 pounds. Not sure what that was about, but I was moving fine by the time I arrived.

Cycling (Road) 2:30:00 [2]

Home via Grant's Trail and a slightly longer route north through mid-county.

Thursday May 29, 2008 #

Cycling (Road) 53:00 [2]

In to work.

Wednesday May 28, 2008 #

Cycling (Road) 1:01:00 [2]

Seemed like an easy day was in order, so I just soft-pedaled the 60 into work.

Cycling (Road) 2:00:00 [2]

Back home via Grant's Trail. Still in the 60, but with a bit more effort.

Tuesday May 27, 2008 #

Running (Road) 20:00 [2]

Really tight after the drive back from Chicago, so I took the bus and link into work to minimize the run.

Running (Road) 1:31:00 [2]

By the end of the day I was feeling good enough to run back from Big Bend station.

Monday May 26, 2008 #

Running (Road) 1:29:00 [2]

From my cousin's house. The bike path through the forest preserve, then over to the Fox river and south through St. Charles and Geneva and straight back.

Sunday May 25, 2008 #

Terrain (Mix) 1:02:00 [2]

Half an hour out on the railroad path then back in the grass along IL64. Cold is pretty much gone.

Terrain (Grass) 20:00 [2]
(sick)

Feeling better, but still pretty stuffed up. Took an easy lap around Campton Hills Park.

Friday May 23, 2008 #

Note
(sick)

Nasty head cold set in. Made the drive up to Chicago a bit unpleasant.

Thursday May 22, 2008 #

Running (Road) 48:00 [2]

Bus to Forest Park then into work.

Wednesday May 21, 2008 #

Running (Road) 1:27:00 [2]

Home from work via the link to Clayton.

Tuesday May 20, 2008 #

Cycling (Road) 47:00 [2]

Not quite halfway into work at a decent clip when a car made a turn in front of me. I pulled off a fairly credible roll over the car which avoided any serious injuries. I can tell that my left arm (first thing to hit the car) and right hip (first thing to hit the pavement) will be pretty sore for a few days. The bike was still ridable, but the front brake was torn off (which seemed rather strange given that the fork and front wheel were OK). Anyway, I decided to ride back home rather than continue in, although it probably would have made more sense to do otherwise and drop the bike at Big Shark for a replacement caliper.

Monday May 19, 2008 #

Running (Road) 38:00 [2]

At CC Lake with Baby-O on the bike. Started fast, but then she got tired and I had to push her up the hills (fortunately, there really aren't any hills at CC Lake).

Sunday May 18, 2008 #

Cycling (Trail) 1:02:00 [3]

More ridge trails at Castlewood. Things are finally drying out - I might check out the Chubb if we go another few days without rain.

Running (Road) 45:00 [2]

With Baby-O biking on the Katy. She's not as fast on crushed stone, so this was a pretty easy jog.

Saturday May 17, 2008 #

Cycling (Trail) 58:00 [2]

At Castlewood. Took it easy since I wanted to have some legs for the meet.

Running (Mix) 10:00 [2]

Warmup.

Orienteering race (Woods) 1:13:50 [4] *** 7.8 km (9:28 / km) +400m 7:32 / km

SLOC meet at Rockwoods Range. Definitely would have enjoyed this one more if my fitness was better as the second half was super hilly. One bad boom when I gave up on a ditch too early thinking I had made a parallel error when I was actually within 50m of the control. A couple smaller bobbles as well. Overall, pretty lame.

Friday May 16, 2008 #

Running (Road) 36:00 [2]

Lunchtime run around the arch.

Thursday May 15, 2008 #

Cycling (Road) 53:00 [2]

In to work. Pushing a bit to stay ahead of the rain.

Wednesday May 14, 2008 #

Running (Road) 1:45:00 [2]

Home from work (taking the link to Clayton) in 88 minutes, which surprised me a bit since I didn't feel like I was pushing. Then a couple more miles around the neighborhood with Baby-O on her bike. I'm not sure what Kate fed her for lunch, but this was NOT the easy training pace of last weekend.

Monday May 12, 2008 #

Cycling (Trail) 1:20:00 [3]

Ridge trails at Castlewood. Goopy on top and bottom, but dry on the steep parts where traction matters. Flood plain is a real mess, having been underwater 4 times so far this spring. It will be interesting to see how much things recover before Conquer Castlewood.

Note

Fans of the Carol's Team blog may want to read this post.

Running (Road) 45:00 [2]

Took Baby-O cycling at CC Lake. She's fast enough that this is getting into legitimate training. Easy pace, for sure, but definitely running.

Friday May 9, 2008 #

Cycling (Road) 55:00 [2]

In to work.

Cycling (Road) 56:00 [2]

Back home.

Orienteering (Woods) 45:00 [2] ***
11c

Setting the sprint course and then jogging/walking the first part of the training course with Mark and Patrick Geldemeier. Inbetween these to sessions (and not included in time), the photographer from the Post Dispatch took a bunch of thrilling action shots of me running through the woods.

Orienteering (Woods) 17:00 [3] ***
6c

Second part of the training course at tempo pace. Felt good to be running fast through the woods again.

Orienteering (Woods) 17:00 [4] ***
8c

Sprint course at competition speed. One small boom, but not too bad for the amount of training I've been doing lately.

Sunday May 4, 2008 #

Orienteering (Woods) 1:19:00 [2] ***
21c

Control picking at Babler. Includes about 10 minutes warming up on road. Modest pace; reasonably clean. Trying not to think about how much better I was this time last year.

Saturday May 3, 2008 #

Note

In-laws in town for the weekend, so not much opportunity to get out. Not the greatest day out anyway, so I didn't feel bad about it.

Friday May 2, 2008 #

Cycling (Road) 56:00 [2]

In to work.

Cycling (Road) 2:00:00 [2]

South to River Des Peres (which is actually looking like a respectable river since it's backed up against the Mississippi right now) and along the bike path to Shrewsbury. Right near the end of the path, there's a slab that's been turned up by frost heave or something. I didn't notice it until I was hitting it at around 25mph. The result was the longest air time I've ever achieved on a road bike without a susbsequent need for professional medical attention.

Thursday May 1, 2008 #

Cycling (Road) 1:03:00 [2]

In to work. Dead legs and a stiff headwind made for a slow ride in.

Cycling (Road) 1:23:00 [2]

Back home via midland.
