Over to the race from home and then some shuffling around the start area. A couple 30-second strides thrown in.

St. Monica's 5K. Fun little race held less than two miles from my house, so it seemed like as good a opportunity as any to put out a long-overdue maximal effort. Hot, humid, and the course didn't have a single 100m stretch of flat ground, so the time is pretty meaningless, but I think I'm probably about a minute off where I'd like to be right now. Heartrate splits (173@1mi, 179, 183) would indicate the pacing was pretty good.
The first bit was slightly downhill, so I actually had the pleasure of leading the race for a while. That fantasy didn't last long as Christen Moore blew by me on the first climb. Well, if you're going to get smoked by a girl, at least make it a really fast girl. Christen was using this as her last tuneup before Triathlon World's next weekend. Ended up finishing fifth, first in 40+. That says more about the quality of the field than about me, but it was still fun to be a big fish, even if the pond was very small.

Running home carrying a trophy seemed retarded so, since they were obviously not going to do awards for a while anyway, I ran home and got my pack and then ran back. Then I ran back home with the trophy in the pack.

Attended Kevin Hunsel's 40th birthday party in St. Charles with Kate and Baby-O. As I expected, I ate and drank enough there that the prospect of yet another party in the late afternoon (one of Baby-O's friends turning 5), was not at all appealing. So I let them go and rode my bike home hitting the cobbles on Main Street, the climb of Caulks Hill (on which the 23-tooth cog was called into service for the first time this year), and Great Harvest to get a loaf of Cinnamon Chip bread for french toast tomorrow morning.
All in all, so fine!
