Cycling (Road) 1:02:00 [2]
weight:174lbs

Legs were super toast today - I guess Tuesday came as a bit of a surprise to them. Anyway, an hour easy spinning in the 60 was all I was up for.

Gym (Cardio) 36:00 [4]
weight:173lbs

5x3:00 at threshold 3:00R on the elliptical. Includes warmup/dn.

Paddling (Canoe) 1:06:00 [3]

Checking some upstream lines on the Meremac for Sunday. David in the back. Found one that's about 10 seconds faster than the two obvious choices (which were equal to the second!) Probably won't matter, but the year we didn't pay attention to such details was the year we got beat by 12 seconds, so I'm glad we scoped it out.

And no, I'm not going to tell any locals what we found. Do your own research.

Terrain (Trail) 3:04:00 [2]
weight:174lbs

Pretty much the whole trail network at Castlewood. Only omission was the ridgetop portion of Grotpeter (in favor of Love, Ranger, and Rollercoaster). Had time to go up and hit that, but decided to do the Lone Wolf loop over again since that's part of the race Sunday.

Sat in the parking lot a looooong time before getting up the gumption for this one, but once I got going I felt fine.

Finished the install of the new oven and cooktop around noon and then we had freinds over for dinner. Not sure what we would have done if I had run into one more snag, but I'm guessing it would have involved me on the receiving end of some pretty harsh words. Anyway, it all came together great and that's one huge item off the domestic chores list.

I suppose I should start training again. I had planned on backing off after Team Trials, but this is getting ridiculous. Ah, well, no races I care about until August and the break has had some medicinal value on many fronts.

Running (Road) 41:00 [2]
weight:171lbs

Easy early morning jog round the hood. Followed by a really good family day.

Cycling (Trail) 1:45:00 [3]
weight:172lbs

Entire trail network at Castlewood. Basically got through everything cleanly, which means I should be ready even if they change the course for Conquer Castlewood (which the frequently do).

I must say, I'm pleasantly surprised at my technique, although GORC's aggressive trail maintenance efforts have dumbed down a few sections, making a non-dab tour of Castlewood much more feasible. Not that I'm complaining; it's great to have a park where you can just go ride and not worry about what crazy obstacle lies around the next bend. Besides, trails don't have to be sick to be fun. The trail they just put in last year (aptly named Rollercoaster) is a blast and even a beginner could ride it.

I suppose I should cross the Meremac and ride the Chubb before my head gets too big for my helmet.

Cycling (Trail) 1:20:00 [3]
weight:172lbs

Repeat of Monday's workout at Castlewood without the annoying detail of trashing my bike (which meant I actually got to ride the ridge trails). Actually, this time it was Doug Nishimura's bike since mine is still laid up. My hardtail skills aren't as rusty as I feared - two times around the loop for the race with no dabs. Granted, it's not a particularly technical course, but it ain't the bunny slope either.

Note

So, as I'm driving into Castlewood, NPR does a review on Willie Nelson's latest effort. For some reason, that sets off a Lynyrd Skynyrd play list in my head for the workout. I don't really have any beef with the boys from Alabama (yeah, I know, really Florida, but that's not what they sing), but I've never been enough of a fan to buy one of their albums. Therefore, I'm just going through all the standards that got a lot of airplay when I was in High School. When I finish up, it occurs to me that the one hit my brain decided it didn't want to play was the one I know the best: Give Me Three Steps. It's not my favorite, but the guitar player in my HS garage band really liked it so he made us all learn it even though we were supposed to be a punk band. Anyway, I get back in the car and NPR is replaying the same damn segment. I switch to the 80's station, but they're doing a comercial block, as is the only surviving alternative station in town. I'm not in the mood for rap, so the only button left on my radio is KSHE (classic rock). I push it and what are they playing? Give Me Three Steps.

Unintentional rest day. 12-hour day at work and by the time we got done with dinner I just didn't feel up to much of anything.

Cycling (Trail) 50:00 [2]
weight:172lbs

Hmmm, I've got an adventure race in two weeks and the last time I rode my mountain bike was January. Sounds like a recipe for distaster.

So, under the heading of train for success, I rode the flood plain section of Castlewood. Sufficiently emboldended by that success, I started up the ridge, only to have my rear dropout snap. Not sure what caused that - I guess it was damaged worse than I thought last summer when I tore the derraileur off. Better to have it break in training, I guess, but now I'm doubly screwed: I'm out of practice and I'll have to ride a borrowed hardtail. Should be interesting.

Another family/recovery day; this one spent at the wineries. Baby-O was good all day and didn't need a nap so we stayed for dinner. Thought about going for an easy spin after we got home, but decided a day completely off would be better.

Saturday May 19, 2007 #

Running (Road) 23:00 [2]
weight:170lbs

Had a recovery weekend scheduled which worked out well because the weather was great for family activities. Took Baby-O to Chinese Cultural Days at Shaw Gardens and then we went to a local carnival where she had her first roller coaster ride. After riding it once with me, she wanted to go solo, which she was allowed to do because she's a crazy tall 3-year-old.

Terrain (Mix) 2:09:00 [2] **
weight:169lbs

If you don't want to blow off everything and go for a long run on a day like today, you might want to check your pulse and make sure you're not dead. Fortunately, I have a client that doesn't mind me skipping out for a few hours at lunch as long as I make it up.

So, another long terrain run in north city. Rather than randomly choosing a route, this time I took an aerial photo (roughly 1:15) and tried to pick out a path that would maximize soft surface running. Staying in contact required a surprising amount of concentration. I checked the map at least as often as I do in the woods. The end result was a route that contained less than 10 minutes on pavement.

Ran around Fairgrounds and O'Fallon parks, both of which are quite nice, but a little lean on feature density to make good sprint venues. Besides, while the stereotype is quite unfair, moving the sprints to the hood isn't going to improve attendance any.

Came back along the river again.

Terrain (Grass) 19:00 [2]

Warmup.

Orienteering race (Park) 10:25 [5] *** 2.3 km (4:32 / km) +14m 4:24 / km

Third Thursday Sprint 1 at Tower Grove (1:5). David Welsh set the first course, so I got to run. Decent course, especially considering this is the first time he's set a sprint and, since I was planning on running, he got very little help on the design. David Frei was out of town, so no death match. Too bad; it was a good run. First by a fair bit.

Orienteering (Park) 46:00 [2] ***

Putting out the controls for the second sprint. It was fun to watch. Links to maps are on the splits (I put my splits from yesterday in for Sprint 2).

Running (Road) 1:13:00 [2]
weight:172lbs

Over to park and back at lunch.

Test running the final version of the sprint course at Tower Grove (1:5). Not an all out effort, but pretty hard. I don't think anyone will be able to run that fast seeing the course for the first time, although David came mightly close to my test run time at Lafayette, so we'll see.

Tuesday May 15, 2007 #

Mapping (Park) 1:13:00 [1] ***
weight:172lbs

Finished the mapping for the special event at Tower Grove at lunchtime. Pleased with the result - I think it will be fun. Was so engrossed, I didn't even notice how dark the sky was getting until I heard the first big boom. Fortunately, I was nearly done, so I hustled through the last bit and got back to work just before the sky opened up.

Running (Road) 33:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood before dinner.

Monday May 14, 2007 #

Mapping (Park) 3:35:00 [1] ***
weight:172lbs

Finished the fieldwork for the Tower Grove sprint map. I still have a bit to do for the "special" event. I won't divulge the details of that until after the race.

Terrain (Grass) 33:00 [2]

After mapping, I jogged around the park to loosen up before test running some course ideas.

Orienteering (Park) 22:00 [3] ***
24c

Test running a bunch of legs for the sprint at Tower Grove (1:5). Roughly tempo effort, broken into three sessions.

Saturday May 12, 2007 #

Cycling (Road) 1:06:00 [2]
weight:171lbs

Easy early morning spin in the 60. Lots of riders out at 6:30AM.

Mapping (Park) 1:10:00 [1] ***
weight:170lbs

Better get moving on the Tower Grove map if I'm going to hold a meet there in a week!

Thursday May 10, 2007 #

Running (Road) 1:20:00 [2]
weight:170lbs

Over to park and back. Includes about 15 minutes on soft surface which I won't bother breaking out.

Orienteering (Park) 14:09 [3] *** 2.3 km (6:09 / km) +15m 5:57 / km
12c

Test running a sprint course at Tower Grove using the old map (1:7500). Decent course, but after running it a I got another idea that will require me to completely redo the course and also do more mapping. Naturally, I intend to adopt that idea because heaven knows I don't have enough things on my plate.

Wednesday May 9, 2007 #

Terrain (Trail) 2:11:00 [2]
weight:174lbs

Chubb Trail starting from Lone Elk. Really slow start - 36 minutes to the tracks. Then felt a bit better as it wasn't so hot in the hills of Tyson.

First FDF engagement of the year ended in a standoff with no blood spilled on either side. I wonder how long the peace will last? Also encountered a surprising number of snakes on the trails. Saw at least a dozen and heard twice as many rustling in the leaves off to the side.

Tuesday May 8, 2007 #

Cycling (Road) 1:57:00 [2]
weight:176lbs

Legs are still toast (no surprise there), so puttered around St. Charles in the 60" gear.

Monday May 7, 2007 #

Cycling (Road) 1:43:00 [2]
weight:177lbs

If it's Monday and my legs are dead it must be time for blasting over cobbles in the 60" gear. Rode the Tour of Flanders loop at a reasonably relaxed pace, but did pass a couple cars (and an SUV!) on the cobbles.

On the switchbacks up to the Page Avenue bridge I was just spinning along keeping the gear turning and passed a guy who seemed to take it as a personal insult. I could hear him sprinting behind me. OK, full marks for balls, but dude, you're riding a full suspension mountain bike, I'm on a 15 pound road bike, and this is a paved climb. Get serious. Anyway, after the thumping I took this weekend, it was nice to have an easy win.

Other 14:29 [2]

By the time I got home, Mama and Baby-O were both ready for dinner, so I had to go for a PR on the lawn or face the prospect of going back outside and getting all sweaty again after eating. Hammered it, although this also goes into the "easy win" column because it's the first time I've run behind the mower since swapping 1/3 of the back yard for Baby-O's playground.

Sunday May 6, 2007 #

Terrain (Trail) 33:00 [2]

Warmup (23 min). And jogging back out to the start for the second course.

Orienteering race (Woods) 2:09:21 [4] *** 12.9 km (10:02 / km) +357m 8:48 / km
25c

Team Trials Long at Pontiac Lake (1:10). Struggled, but managed to limit the losses except for one big boom (9 minutes at #5). I'm OK with it, but I hope to get better on this stuff.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:08:00 [3] ***
14c

One way to get better would be to practice, so I dragged myself back out and ran the green course. Well, "ran" is probably stretching it, although I was able to push the long leg and a few others. Not exactly a race effort, but good training and decent focus.

Saturday May 5, 2007 #

Terrain (Trail) 39:00 [2]

Warmup (25 min) and a couple trips back to the parking area after the event.

Orienteering race (Woods) 44:47 [4] *** 5.5 km (8:09 / km) +240m 6:41 / km

US Team Trials Middle at Peach Mountain (1:10). Good solid run on a really fun course. 9th among TT entrants.

Warmup

Orienteering race (Woods) 17:38 [4] *** 3.0 km (5:53 / km) +65m 5:18 / km

US Team Trials Sprint at Haven Hill (1:5). Fun course. No big errors but lots of little ones. Mainly came down to running speed and today my legs let me down a bit.

Orienteering (Woods) 49:00 [2] ***
17c

Went out on the old 1:10 map to check out some of the more technical terrain. Not much of a confidence builder for tomorrow. I can read the terrain fine if I stop, but I have real problems on the move.

Thursday May 3, 2007 #

Note
weight:173lbs

Thought about getting a run in but, after 12 hours at work, running in the rain seemed far less enjoyable than taking Mama and Baby-O to Dewey's followed by Cold Stone and then Kaldi's. At the last stop, Baby-O got to watch a coal train go by! Most exciting. Yummy too. Pretty sure an extra couple pounds won't matter in the sprint.

Wednesday May 2, 2007 #

Running (Road) 1:06:00 [2]

Down to the Arch, through Laclede's Landing and back to midtown. Stopped a couple times to check out the menus of some new restaurants on Washington Street.

Probably should have drank more (water, not wine) last night. I don't think that's an "honest" weight, but I'll take it for now.
