Running (Road) 45:00 [2]

Finished the year with an easy run on roads. I hope to be doing fewer of these next year and more in the woods (was way off in that area this year, although my results didn't suffer too much).

Orienteering (Woods) 2:55:00 [4] *** 20.0 km (8:45 / km) +545m 7:42 / km

SLOC 3-hour course from 2004 at Hawn (1:15). Pretty clean and a good pace. Still a couple minutes off David's winning sweep time. Didn't think I was running that hard, but I felt pretty whipped by the end. It started raining about half way and turned to thunderstorms for the last half hour. Kinda strange for this time of year.

Running (Road) 43:00 [2]

Over to Y and back. Slightly longer route today.

Gym (Weights) 27:00 [4]

2 sets, 2nd on the heavy side of moderate. Upper only.

Tuesday Dec 27, 2005 #

Running (Mix) 1:01:00 [3]

Mostly on the old RR grade by my cousin's house which still had a lot of ice and snow. Apparently it's 60 degrees in St. Louis.

Note

Drove straight back to STL but it was cold, dark, and rainy by the time we got there.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:31:00 [3] *** 9.1 km (10:00 / km) +186m 9:04 / km
spiked:14/17c

Blue course from the 1998 A-meet at Deer Grove (CAOC 1:10). With the footing still slushy and the map light to medium green, I decided to focus on accuracy rather than speed. In that respect, I was successful with just a few minor bobbles. Might have been a competitive time given the conditions. It sure has been nice to get in some work on this terrain - completely different from what we have in St. Louis.

Orienteering (Woods) 56:00 [4] *** 6.3 km (8:53 / km) +35m 8:39 / km
spiked:11/18c

Control picking at Busse Woods South (CAOC 1:10). Thought this would be about 10 minutes faster. Was on the west side of the map which is all yellow, blue and various shades of green. The yellow and trails were really tough running because all the snow is melting.

Map Running (Mix) 25:00 [2]

To/from 2nd course.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:08:00 [3] *** 7.5 km (9:04 / km) +40m 8:50 / km
spiked:9/15c

Old red course on Busse Woods North (CAOC 1:10). Much different than the southern map, this is all white woods. Still a bit slow with the slush, but not as bad as the south map. It was also hard to read the marshes, but it was still a lot of fun.

Friday Dec 23, 2005 #

Note

Drove to Chicago with the obligatory stop in Champaign so various sets of grandparents could see baby-O.

Thursday Dec 22, 2005 #

Running (Road) 58:00 [2]

Easy lunchtime run.

Monday Dec 19, 2005 #

Running (Road) 40:00 [3]

Moderate jog round the hood. First time legs have felt good since Pere Marquette.

Saturday Dec 17, 2005 #

Running (Trail) 1:39:00 [2]

Mellow run at Castlewood. Flood plain trails plus Blue Ribbon.

Thursday Dec 15, 2005 #

Running (Road) 29:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood. Legs are still pretty shot from Pere Marquette. I guess that's good in that it indicates a pretty maximal effort.

Tuesday Dec 13, 2005 #

Running (Road) 39:00 [2]

Over to gym and back.

Gym (Weights) 25:00 [4]

2 sets, moderate, upper only.

Sunday Dec 11, 2005 #

Orienteering (Woods) 3:05:00 [2]

Hanging controls for the SLOC meet. Doug Nishimura (who also ran PM yesterday with a really fast 60:04) came with me to get some practice. I let him lead to a few controls and he did pretty well for a novice. We were both really tired and moved at a pace that would normally be a "1", but this is Greensfelder, so there's no escaping some effort.

Saturday Dec 10, 2005 #

Running (Mix) 47:00 [2]

Warmup (30min) and down. Mostly on grass plus a bit on trail.

Running race (Trail) 1:02:20 [5] 7.5 mi (8:19 / mi) +440m 7:02 / mi

Pere Marquette Trail Run. Tough conditions (3 inches of fresh snow). Winning time was off about four minutes so being 2 minutes off my best was sort of a PR. Finished 20th (of 600), 2nd in my age group. Good run; I don't see how I could have gone much faster. Nice way to finish out the year.

Friday Dec 9, 2005 #

Running (Road) 30:00 [2]

Easy jog to loosen up for tomorrow.

Wednesday Dec 7, 2005 #

Running (Trainer) 30:00 [4]

6x400@90 on the treadmill with 90s recovery. Includes warmup.

Sunday Dec 4, 2005 #

Running (Grass) 15:00 [2]

Warm up. I wasn't very warm when I got done (13F).

Orienteering race (Woods) 2:47:27 [4] *** 14.0 km (11:58 / km) +810m 9:17 / km
spiked:20/26c

Possum Trot 9 at Bluffwoods (1:10). Good run. Ankle didn't give me too much trouble, although I was a lot more careful in the thick stuff than I would normally be - and there was quite a bit of thick stuff. Navigated well, one dumb boom following the group when I was pretty sure everybody was going the wrong way (they were). Several other minor errors, but less than 5 minutes total. Was in a huge group that steadily dwindled until it was just a duel between me and Tom Carr over the last K. Managed to come up with a pretty good kick to take third. Everett and Platt were way up front.

Full report.

Saturday Dec 3, 2005 #

Running (Grass) 30:00 [2]

Warmed up a bit longer than usual to get the ankle loosened up.

Orienteering (Woods) 41:00 [3] ***
spiked:12/16c

Kansas champs. Technically a race, but I won't count it as such. Jogged it since I didn't want to risk messing up the ankle for tomorrow. Still a fun race. Got all the MICRO controls right.
