Running (Mix) 1:05:00 [2]

Powerline loop at lunchtime. Not feeling particularly strong today. I hope I recover in time for this weekend's craziness.

Tuesday Aug 30, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 1:45:00 [2]

Over to Marquette and back. Brought my lights this time so I didn't have to blast home before dark.

Cycling (Road) 1:50:00 [4]

Marquette Ride. A bit different than usual. Since the group was pretty small, we decided to regroup after each hard section. Added quite a bit of time to the ride (usually between 95 and 100 minutes), but the hard sections were still plenty hard.

Running (Mix) 1:02:00 [2]

Between my clandestine parking spot and Forest 44. MDC doesn't like people in there after 10PM so I have to park in the commuter lot on the other side of the interstate and go in via the drainage tunnels. Very adventure racerish, as Spike would say.

Orienteering (Woods/Night) 1:05:00 [2] ***
spiked:5/10c

Night training at Forest 44 (1:15). Vegetation is still a bit greener than mapped in spots, but not bad. Tried to be accurate rather than fast and ended up being neither. I think I navigate better when I'm pushing a bit. No big mistakes, though.

Saturday Aug 27, 2005 #

Running (Trail) 1:06:00 [3]

Running before (22 min) and after on the Chubb, Flint Quarry, and Chinkopin trails.

Orienteering (Woods) 52:00 [4] ***
spiked:13/16c

Old course at West Tyson (1:10) that I run every year about this time to get something of a baseline. Ran well, felt better than last week. Navigated better, too. Not terribly hot (low 80's) but still crazy humid.

Thursday Aug 25, 2005 #

Running (Road) 45:00 [2]

Pushing baby-O in the jogger. Temperature: 78F. Dew point: 78F. What is up with fog at 6PM in the summer?

Wednesday Aug 24, 2005 #

Running (Road) 41:00 [2]

Lunchtime run with Jeff.

Tuesday Aug 23, 2005 #

Running (Road) 40:00 [3]

Lunchtime run with Jeff.

Cycling (Road) 2:59:00 [4]

Marquette ride including some tempo to get there (was running late) and coming back (was getting dark). Very hard pace for the first half hour established a lead group of 4. Then we took it easy, except for the climbs.

2 for 2 getting in the break at Marquette this year! Either I'm getting faster or these rides are getting lamer. Unfortunately, I think I know which it is although riding 5 pounds lighter than last year has to be helping a bit.

Monday Aug 22, 2005 #

Running (Road) 52:00 [2]

Easy jog at night. Still warm (80), but much nicer than it has been.

Sunday Aug 21, 2005 #

Orienteering (Woods) 1:08:00 [3]

Two short courses at West Tyson (1:10). A bit rough around the edges, but OK for the first time back into the woods. Includes some jogging before/after/between.

Saturday Aug 20, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 2:32:00 [3]

Big Shark shop (not team) ride. Got taken out by a triathlete who obviously hadn't made contact in a large group before. He felt bad about it, but neither of us were hurt much. If you'd like to avoid such a situation, instructions on staying upright can be found here. (See today's entry).

Friday Aug 19, 2005 #

Running (Mix) 1:04:00 [2]

Powerline loop (mostly grass) during another cooker of a lunch break.

Thursday Aug 18, 2005 #

Running (Road) 1:22:00 [3]

Seemed like a great idea - night run over to Creve Coeur Park and take the path along the lake. Forgot that between the recent rains, current heat, and the fact that I was the only large sweaty creature running past the marsh at nearly midnight I would be the primary target for several thousand mosquitos. At least it got me to go fast for that part of the run.

Tuesday Aug 16, 2005 #

Running (Road) 32:00 [3]

Lunchtime run with Jeff. Cooler temps allowed us to bump the pace a bit.

Cycling (Road) 2:28:00 [4]

Alton Animal Ride. Good stiff pace tonight with seven in the lead group. Includes a half hour before and after spinning on the bike path.

Sunday Aug 14, 2005 #

Running (Trail) 3:18:00 [3]

Babler Beast was cancelled because so many trees were down from yesterday afternoon's storm. Decided to run the Chubb, which was slow going along the river (goopy and lots of blow down) but OK on the Tyson side. When I finished, David and Jeff showed up, so I ran some more with them.

Saturday Aug 13, 2005 #

Orienteering (Park) 45:00 [2] **

"Hanging" (actually driving stakes) the yellow course (20 min) and picking up controls after the meet.

Running (Grass) 15:00 [2]

Warmup.

Orienteering race (Park) 39:48 [4] *** 7.5 km (5:18 / km) +115m 4:56 / km
spiked:7/10c

Forest Park (1:10). Not the best run of my life, but I was surprised that David took two minutes out of me. He's not usually that good at park meets. Death match is looking really bad, especially since we're not going to race against each other very much this fall. One boom for about a minute and two tentative controls. Map and report here.

Friday Aug 12, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 53:00 [2]

Easy spin to loosen up for tomorrow.

Wednesday Aug 10, 2005 #

Running (Mix) 1:18:00 [2]

Powerline run at lunch with Jeff. Super hot.

Tuesday Aug 9, 2005 #

Running (Road) 32:00 [2]

Easy (albeit hot - summer's back) jog at lunch with Jeff.

Cycling (Road) 1:17:00 [2]

Over to Carondolet and some riding between races.

Cycling race (Road) 50:00 [5]

Tuesday night crit #1. Big effort in the middle of the race to try to bridge to the leaders (who ultimately lapped the field). The heroism was glorified by the complete failure of the move. Once sucked back into the field, I could only sit on the back.

Cycling race (Road) 25:00 [4]

Tuesday night crit #2. I guess with the heat it was a one effort night. I never got my legs back. Rode off the front just to make sure I wasn't dodging effort. When that was promptly reeled in, I called it quits for the night.

Cycling (Road) 46:00 [3]

Back to the old house. Should have been an easy 2 for effort, but for some reason I decided I should ride Southwest Ave and, having made that decision, figured I might as well take it in the 17-tooth cog. It's the right gear, but it hurt a lot.

Monday Aug 8, 2005 #

Running (Road) 41:00 [2]

Over to Y and back.

Swimming (Pool) 10:00 [3]

50@45, 100@1:40, 200@3:35, 100@1:45, 50@47 all go on next even minute. Lame workout, but I was kinda depressed this evening.

Sunday Aug 7, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 2:10:00 [3]

Tour of Flanders loop followed by two laps of the Hog Hollow loop. All taken at firm tempo with good efforts on the bricks and climbs.

Saturday Aug 6, 2005 #

Running (Road) 54:00 [3]

With baby-O in the jogger.

Friday Aug 5, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 1:07:00 [3]

2xRiver Valley loop at moderate tempo with a fairly sincere effort up the climb each time. Also a good push up Old Farm on the way home.

Thursday Aug 4, 2005 #

Running (Road) 39:00 [3]

Early morning over to Y and back.

Swimming (Pool) 12:00 [4]

2x(5x50@45 go on 1:00) 2:00 recovery

Running (Mix) 53:00 [3]

Luncthime run, not too hot today. Includes 3@21:00 on grass. Rest of the run on road.

Wednesday Aug 3, 2005 #

Running (Road) 42:00 [3]

Moderate lunchtime run with Jeff.

Tuesday Aug 2, 2005 #

Running (Road) 50:00 [2]

Easy lunchtime run.

Cycling (Road) 1:18:00 [2]

Riding to Carondolet and back from the old house (no, it's not sold yet, so I have to cut the lawn).

Cycling race (Road) 48:00 [4]

Tuesday night Crit #1. My head wasn't in it at all. I mostly sat in the field. I still give it a 4 because I did ride up front at the end, launching one move and chasing down another.

Monday Aug 1, 2005 #

Running (Road) 42:00 [2]

Over to Y and back. Not as miserable as I thought it would be, but still pretty stiff.

Swimming (Pool) 20:00 [3]

8x100@1:45 go on 2:30.
