Paddling race (Kayak) 51:00 [2] **
spiked:1/3c

Back in the inflatable kayaks (which are very hard to paddle with any authority). We seemed to move through the water better, although maybe it was just hard to tell how slow we were going at night. A couple small bobbles looking for controls, but no real problems. Back into second.

Orienteering race (Woods) 3:44:00 [3] **
spiked:3/4c

Aerial photo at night. David took over navigation and did a fine job of it. Still in second, now behind on both points and time (we skipped a couple controls to get back on schedule).

Cycling race (Road) 1:49:00 [3] *
spiked:4/4c

Hit the last bike leg just as the sun was coming up. Race director removed two optional controls (why?) so we had to content ourselves with getting the easy controls. As before, all on dirt roads with reasonably fast surface.

Running race (Trail) 1:23:00 [2]

Last running section was supposed to be a "hard 2-hour run". Instead it was a fairly easy (albeit hilly) hike (vegetation too thick to run) that we finished fast enough that we could have gotten all the controls we skipped and had time to spare. Ended up finishing third because one of the teams behind us (LBC/High Gear) picked up more controls. Kinda sucked. Full report.

Running race (Road) 1:23:00 [3]

Extreme Heart Challenge Adventure Race (USARA Qualifier) with David, Jeff, and Carrie. First leg was a run to the river. We had to carry an inflatable kayak with us. Fourth at end of run, a couple minutes off the lead (Iowa Active).

Paddling race (Kayak) 1:32:00 [2] **
spiked:3/3c

Picked up another boat and paddled down the Missouri River. Caught Iowa Active at end of paddle.

Cycling race (Road) 50:00 [4] *
spiked:3/3c

Blasted the first bike section so we wouldn't be followed in the woods. All dirt roads, but pretty fast surface. Rode lead with the other three on the tow.

Orienteering race (Woods) 48:00 [2] **
spiked:4/4c

Good map, but the control locations were all pretty easy. David did most of the nav. Finished shortly before dark still in a dead heat with Iowa Active.

Cycling race (Road) 4:32:00 [3] *
spiked:7/9c

More dirt roads, all in the dark. Two badly misplaced controls and some serious problems with the map spoiled an otherwise good course. Not sure what place we were in at the end because many teams were skipping the optional controls.

Running (Road) 33:00 [2]

Easy run to get loose for the 8-hour car trip to Sioux City.

Wednesday Jul 27, 2005 #

Running (Road) 59:00 [2]

Heat finally broke. 8-minute pace with Jeff at lunchtime felt easy.

Tuesday Jul 26, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 2:10:00 [3]

Alton "Animal" ride. Actually, most of it is pretty mellow, but there were some big pushes in the mid section. Good sized group at the start, quickly went to five when the pace lifted. Includes 35 minutes of spinning on my own prior to the ride.

Monday Jul 25, 2005 #

Running 39:00 [2]

Over to Y and back.

Swimming (Pool) 10:00 [2]

In a fit of optimism following yesterday's win, I registered for the Babler Beast. Sure I haven't swam in a year, but I'm sure I can get prepared in three weeks. At least it's a short swim.

Sunday Jul 24, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 30:00 [2]

"warm" up/dn. Was plenty warm just standing around.

Cycling race (Road) 55:55 [5] 21.0 mi (2:40 / mi)

Show Me State Games Duathlon. Yes, you read that right. 22.5 miles an hour. Course was hot and hilly, but damn, that's slow. Was second at the end of the ride in a field that had some quality so I guess it was just a tough course.

Running race (Road) 20:19 [5] 5.0 km (4:04 / km)

Running leg. Jason started blowing chunks (serves him right for crushing me on the bike) so I passed him for the win. Full report. With the sprint to the bikes and transition, my time was 1:16:58.

Saturday Jul 23, 2005 #

Cycling (Trail) 2:30:00 [2]

Night ride in Mark Twain Natl Forest with Jeff & Carrie.

Thursday Jul 21, 2005 #

Running (Mix) 42:00 [3]

Was supposed to be an easy lunchtime run, but the heat made running at all difficult. Pulse at the end of the run was 160, so I'll give it a 3.

Wednesday Jul 20, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 3:06:00 [3]

Six flags loop with credible aerobic efforts on the hills but nothing deep. Some moderate tempo on the way back.

Monday Jul 18, 2005 #

Running (Mix) 1:02:00 [2]

Really hot lunchtime run along the powerlines.

Sunday Jul 17, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 3:52:00 [3]

Mostly mellow ride with a few stiff climbs with Glenn from Big Shark.

Saturday Jul 16, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 1:22:00 [2]

Over to Queeny and back plus some miscellaneous putting around.

Orienteering race (Bike) 35:42 [4] **
spiked:13/15c

SLOC Bike-O at Queeny (1:10). Trails were in good shape despite yesterdays rain - an indication of how dry things have been, I suppose. Cut through the woods a couple times, but it was mostly hammering. David Frei wasn't there at the start, but I didn't know if he'd show up late, so I rode it pretty hard.

Cycling race (Trail) 32:41 [5] *
spiked:14/15c

In an interesting twist, Yvonne had us repeat the loop without a map. Fairly easy to remember where I had been, although I did take a different route on one leg. I still wasn't sure if David would show so I really blasted on this one. Blew right by one control because I forgot which knoll it was on. Lost about a minute there but everything else was clean. Since David never did show, it was a lot of unneccessary effort, but it was fun to harmmer.

Thursday Jul 14, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 57:00 [2]

Easy spin.

Wednesday Jul 13, 2005 #

Running (Road) 40:00 [3]

Lunchtime run with Jeff at a good stiff clip.

Running (Road) 55:00 [2]

Over to Forest Park and back from the old house (I was showing it to prospective buyers).

Running race (Road) 11:16 [5] 3.0 km (3:45 / km)

I decided not to do the MO TT champs this weekend. Therefore, I felt blasting the pace series run was an OK thing to do. A bit better than last week, although still slower than I'd like.

Monday Jul 11, 2005 #

Running (Road) 34:00 [2]

Easy lunchtime jog.

Sunday Jul 10, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 1:37:00 [2]

Riding to Soulard, used it as a warmup (I wasn't feeling 100% this morning and figured a long warmup would help).

Cycling race (Road) 57:00 [4]

Soulard Crit, M40+. Always one of my favorite events of the year. 1-mile, 10-corner course lined with a fairly enthusiastic crowd. First 20 minutes were insane and the field basically disintegrated. The front 15 got back together and things settled down after that. Four got away near the end. Took third in the field sprint for 7th overall.

Cycling (Road) 1:42:00 [2]

Rode back a slightly longer route. Another hot day. From when I set out, I drank 9 pounds of water and 4 pounds of Gatorade. Was still 6 pounds lighter at the end.

Saturday Jul 9, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 1:51:00 [2]

Easy spin. Hot day.

Friday Jul 8, 2005 #

Cycling (Trail) 4:12:00 [2]

Berryman trail plus some fire roads with David, Jeff, and Carrie. Started at 8:30PM so almost the whole ride was with lights.

Thursday Jul 7, 2005 #

Running (Mix) 43:00 [2]

Easy lunchtime run on road and grass.

Wednesday Jul 6, 2005 #

Running (Mix) 35:00 [2]

Warmup on grass, warmdown on pavement.

Running race (Road) 12:50 [5] 2.0 mi (6:25 / mi)

Pace run at Forest Park. I suppose I really am this slow right now since training for 24-hour races doesn't do much for your speed. The heat and yesterday's ride didn't help either. Splits were 6:35, 6:15 so maybe I just needed to adjust to the effort a bit.

Tuesday Jul 5, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 1:40:00 [2]

Over to Marquette and back.

Cycling (Road) 1:39:00 [4]

Marquette f your buddy ride (hey, I don't name them, I just ride them). This used to be viewed as STL's toughest weekly ride. It probably still is, although the popularity of the Tuesday night crits has thinned the field a bit. Still, our lead group had 2 cat II's, a III, and 2 really strong triathletes. In keeping with the rides name, we worked together hard to consolidate the lead and then turned on each other. We were all pretty evenly matched, so even though we split on the last two climbs, we regrouped and finished together.

Monday Jul 4, 2005 #

Running (Road) 31:00 [2]

Easy jog near my parents house with my college roommate who came up for the memorial service.

Sunday Jul 3, 2005 #

Note

A hard day, but also a good one. Gave the eulogy at Carol's memorial service. Not surprisingly, the music was fantastic. The other speakers did a really nice job.

Saturday Jul 2, 2005 #

Running (Mix) 2:26:00 [2]

Half an hour of running along the waterfront with Baby-O in the jogger. Then I left her with mama and took the Cascadilla gorge trail up to Cornell. Back through downtown via the commons and the big grunt up west hill. Once on top the ridge, I cut through abandonded farms - mostly wildflower meadow, but did run into some rasberry cane which was no fun in shorts.

Friday Jul 1, 2005 #

Running (Road) 1:04:00 [3]

Down to the lake and back (about 800' elevation change) from my parent's house.
