Cycling (Road) 1:46:00 [2]

Riding over to the races and back.

Cycling race (Road) 1:25:00 [3]

Tuesday night crits 1&2. Not really the best venue for a recovery ride with my legs still torched from last weekend. Decided to work on moving around in the pack. Would drop all the way to the back and then move to the front moving up through the middle of the field rather than around the edges. It made it interesting and I didn't have to go too deep. Was at the front for the windup in the second race, so I did mix it up a bit. Was fourth out of the last turn, but had no legs for the sprint.

Cycling race (Road) 7:00:00 [3]

Mission on the Muscatatuck adventure race with Brad Baum and Doug Nishimura. A bit hard to split out the time because so many legs had multiple disciplines. First overall. Race report here.

Cycling race (Trail) 30:00 [3]

Singletrack section was really short.

Orienteering race (Woods) 2:30:00 [2] **

Orienteering sections were good. Includes about an hour of moderatly technical work at night.

Orienteering race (Road) 4:20:00 [3] *

Also had a fair bit of the usual AR trekking.

Gym race (Climbing) 1:00:00 [4]

Ropes sections included climbing, zipline, traverse, and rappel.

Other race 2:00:00 [3]

Not sure how to classify the paddling section. It sure wasn't paddling because there was hardly any water and we had these lifeboat-sized rafts. Mostly carrying the boats on the road and sometimes wading in the "river".

Thursday May 26, 2005 #

Running (Road) 34:00 [2]

Easy lunchtime run with Rusty and Jeff.

Wednesday May 25, 2005 #

Note

More low intensity box lifting. Actually feel a little fatigue in my forearms, so there may be some training value to this moving thing.

Tuesday May 24, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 1:20:00 [3]

Riding over to, between, and back from races.

Cycling race (Road) 50:00 [4]

Tuesday night crit #1. Didn't want to toast my legs for the weekend, so I just sat in the field. Pace was pretty fast with a big windup for the sprint, so I sat that out as well.

Cycling race (Road) 39:00 [4]

Tuesday night crit #2. Huge field (over 100 riders). Pace was brisk, but steady so sitting in was easy. Stayed near the front the whole way. Took third in the field sprint (a break was away).

Monday May 23, 2005 #

Note

Moving day! Several hours of low-intensity lifting, but no elevated heart rate.

Sunday May 22, 2005 #

Paddling (Kayak) 1:03:00 [2]

Easy paddle on Creve Coeur lake. Not feeling particularly motivated this morning. Maybe I'll feel like doing something more substantial this afternoon.

Running (Trail) 1:24:00 [3]

My motivation rose in the afternoon, but so did the temperature. Ran a lap of the Lewis trail and the first few miles were tough. Then it cooled off and I was able to complete the loop at a pretty good clip.

Cycling (Road) 39:00 [2]

Warmup.

Cycling race (Road) 1:49:00 [4]

Missouri Road Championships (40+). Two laps of an excellent course. After a pokey first 10 miles, things got interesting. Made the big split on the climbs at the start of the second lap. Shortly after, my teammate Joe Walsh got away with three others so I became a passenger. Took 3rd in the sprint which got me 7th overall. OK result, especially considering how little riding I've done this spring. Full report here.

Cycling (Road) 1:05:00 [3]

Rode another lap in the opposite direction with Joe Fuller who pushed a bit harder than I would have chosen. The course is actually tougher overall in the other direction, although the big climbs are easier.

Map Running (Woods) 36:00 [2]

Poking around Creve Coeur Park on the old map (1:10). In need of some major revisions, but most of the changes are for the better. I think you could set some fun A-quality courses here.

Orienteering (Woods) 42:00 [2]

Ran a short course. Easy pace to see if the old map is even useful as a base map (barely) and to save my legs for tomorrow.

Thursday May 19, 2005 #

Running 51:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood. Will be one of my last in this hood. I have to move some more boxes to the new house now.

Wednesday May 18, 2005 #

Running (Road) 58:00 [2]

Lunchtime run with Rusty & Jeff.

Monday May 16, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 58:00 [2]

Easy morning spin at Forest Park.

Sunday May 15, 2005 #

Running (Grass) 15:00 [2]

Warmup.

Orienteering race (Park) 22:19 [4] *** 3.2 km (6:58 / km) +100m 6:02 / km
spiked:22/17c

SLOC score-O at Laumeier (1:5). Fun course on a tiny map. Thick woods and dense trail network made for lots of interesting route choices. Beat David to win by 90 seconds. Death match at 4-2 David. Map and details here

Paddling (Kayak) 1:48:00 [3]

After the meet a bunch of us went over to Valley Park for some paddling. Fairly mellow, but I give it a 3 for the big pushes up two fast sections.

Saturday May 14, 2005 #

Running (Road) 42:00 [2]

Easy jog over to Webster Groves for the...

Running race (Road) 20:04 [4] 5.0 km (4:01 / km) +50m 3:49 / km

ALS 5K. I figured I should put in an appearance at this one since I'm running an ALS charity myself these days. It was a nice little race and it raised $8,500 for the ALS Foundation. I ran it as a tempo run, but did put in a decent kick at the end to take third. (You know you've found a pretty small pond when 20:04 takes home a trophy).

Running (Road) 50:00 [2]

Warmdown and running back home. Felt a little silly carrying a trophy - I certainly didn't expect to get one as I was saving my legs for tomorrow.

Friday May 13, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 1:08:00 [4]

10x400@29 in 62" gear (170 RPM), 2:30 recovery. Includes warmup/down.

Thursday May 12, 2005 #

Running (Road) 53:00 [2]

Easy lunchtime run with Rusty and Jeff. My back is still really stiff, but feels better after running.

Wednesday May 11, 2005 #

Gym (Weights) 30:00 [3]

Rather lame upper body workout.

Running (Mix) 34:00 [2]

Lunchtime jog following the lifting. Ran about half on grass, half on road. Getting kinda hot.

Tuesday May 10, 2005 #

Running (Road) 29:00 [2]

Easy morning jog round the hood to loosen up after a long travel day with Baby-O.

Cycling (Road) 1:19:00 [2]

Riding over to park and back, plus some riding between races.

Cycling race (Road) 59:00 [4]

Tuesday night crit #1. Fairly mellow pace as these things go. We had a man in the break pretty much the whole race, so I just hung out about 10 riders deep until the end when it all got back together. Finished 10th in the sprint again - seeing some improvement there, but need to work on my positioning. I don't have the speed to come around 10 riders in the last 200m - I need to be closer to the front during the windup. Time includes first 10 minutes of the second race. I had to bail out to get home on time.

Sunday May 8, 2005 #

Running (Road) 56:00 [2]

Easy run around my parent's house.

Saturday May 7, 2005 #

Note

Flew to Ithaca in the AM to visit my sister (probably for the last time). Took over an hour to get four sentences out of her. Sure wish there was some way to get this done before she goes. Other than being rather frustrated at not being able to speak, she is remarkably upbeat.

Friday May 6, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 3:13:00 [3]

Had to work in Alton today, so I brought my bike and got out on some different roads after work. Over to Pere Marquette via the hills to the north and back along the Mississippi.

Thursday May 5, 2005 #

Running (Road) 42:00 [2]

Easy lunchtime run with Rusty.

Wednesday May 4, 2005 #

Orienteering (Woods) 48:00 [4]

An old Green course at Babler (blown up to 1:10). Was pleasantly surprised by how open the woods are - Babler is usually getting nasty around now. The leaves are out, but the undergrowth hasn't filled in yet, so I could still run pretty much everywhere.

Tuesday May 3, 2005 #

Running (Road) 40:00 [2]

Early morning job round the hood. My back has been stiff the last couple days (didn't much like the yardwork over the weekend) and the run helped loosen things up.

Cycling (Road) 48:00 [2]

Spinning before/between/after the races.

Cycling race (Road) 49:00 [4]

Tuesday Night Crit #1. Since it was my first bike race of the year, I just sat in. The first big acceleration came right at the gun and didn't let up for several laps. I was beginning to wonder if I was going to get taken off the back (about half the field didn't survive), but things eased off a bit after 15 minutes.

Cycling race (Road) 33:00 [5]

Tuesday Night Crit #2. Rode a bit more actively. Bridged to a break with two laps to go, but the whole field came up half a lap later. Got 10th in the field sprint, which is good for me.

Note

After the race, the I was shootin shit with the ref about how I miss riding in the pro/1/2 fields and he out of the blue offered to bump me back up to cat-2. Seems like forever since I gave up riding with the pros, but it's kinda tempting.

Monday May 2, 2005 #

Running (Road) 53:00 [3]

Over to Big Shark for the team meeting and back. Intended to be an easy stretch your legs type of run, but with the cool weather some decent tempo felt good.

Sunday May 1, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 4:01:00 [2]

Over to Webster Groves, then to St. Charles via Page bridge. Road length of main street (1 mile of very old brick) in honor of the spring classics, which I've been too busy to follow this year. Back to Earth City via 370 bridge and then Midland to Forest Park. Was surprised to get to the park in only 3:30, so I did a loop around the park to bring the distance up to 4:00.

Did some moderate tempo into the wind on the flood plain, but mostly it was easy miles.

Running (Road) 41:00 [2]

My arthritis in my foot's been bothering me again - an annoying remnant of the double break two years ago. Since the only thing that makes it feel better is running, I loaded Baby-O into the stroller and took her to a park. After she had had her fill of swings and slides, we came back a longer route.
