Running (Road) 41:00 [2]

Easy lunchtime run with Jeff. Fantastic day.

Wednesday Mar 30, 2005 #

Map Running (Mix) 27:00 [2] *

Jogging from where I parked (at finish) to start.

Orienteering (Woods) 50:10 [4] *** 5.7 km (8:48 / km) +225m 7:21 / km
spiked:10/14c

Test ran the green course for the A-meet at Rockwoods (1:15 - competitors will get 1:10). Another great course by David Frei. Even though I know this park quite well, I had to stay focused. Made one dumb error for a couple minutes, everything else was pretty clean.

Fairly close to competition effort, although I took the sting out of the hills so my legs would be OK this weekend.

Tuesday Mar 29, 2005 #

Cycling (Trail) 1:34:00 [3]

Chubb trail from Lone Elk including the Castlewood loop and flint quarry. The Castlewood loop is a mess because of all the deadfall depostited across the trail from the flood.

Monday Mar 28, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 52:00 [2]

Easy spin round Forest Park before work.

Running (Mix) 58:00 [3]

Lunchtime run. North to the powerlines and then a couple miles along the powerline ride. Back through the subdivisions.

Saturday Mar 26, 2005 #

Running (Road) 1:17:00 [3]

With Big Shark Tri team at Creve Coeur Lake.

Orienteering (Woods) 23:35 [4] *** 2.5 km (9:26 / km) +95m 7:56 / km
spiked:13/14c

Ran model course at Emmenegger (1:10) which is also the new test loop. Decent pace considering the vegetation, but I think I can take a couple minutes off that.

Cycling (Trail) 1:27:00 [3]

1 loop of the Conquer Castlewood course at close to race speed then another hour messing around at an easier pace.

Friday Mar 25, 2005 #

Mapping 2:57:00 [1]

Southern part of Emmenegger (north part will be left as is for the model event). Lot's of new trails. Some vegetation changes.

Thursday Mar 24, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 54:00 [3]

AM: 6x400@30 in 60"gear (170rpm), 3:00 recovery. Includes warmup/down. Need to get that down to around 26 seconds if I'm going to do anything on the track this summer.

Running (Road) 46:00 [4]

Lunchtime tempo with Jeff. 3@21:00 into 800@3:00.

Wednesday Mar 23, 2005 #

Running (Road) 54:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood. Legs are still a bit heavy. Includes a few minutes at the end running with Lu Dog who, despite her advanced age and weight, decided to push the pace on her walk tonight.

Tuesday Mar 22, 2005 #

Running (Road) 22:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood. Legs are still dead, but my insides have settled.

Sunday Mar 20, 2005 #

Map Running race (Woods/Night) 3:50:00 [2] ** 14.0 km (16:26 / km) +450m 14:09 / km

A little sick quickly went to really sick and I was puking every time we went uphill. With my gastronomical problems occupying most of my foreground CPU cycles, David took over all the navigation duties shortly after midnight. We had to walk all the hills (I still puked on each one), but we were able to jog a little bit on the trails.

The slower pace did yeild cleaner navigation, so we still made good enough progress to clean the course ahead of Thompson/Wagnon for the win.

Saturday Mar 19, 2005 #

Running (Mix) 10:00 [2]

Warmup.

Orienteering race (Woods) 2:19:52 [4] *** 15.5 km (9:01 / km) +500m 7:46 / km

PTOC 3-hour score at Weston Bend (1:15). Ran with David Frei and Michael Eglinski for the first 45 minutes, but wasn't able to match their speed through the thick stuff. Finished 3rd. (Death match now 2-1 David).

Orienteering race (Woods/Night) 2:58:00 [3] ** 12.0 km (14:50 / km) +485m 12:20 / km

First part of the Bluffwoods (1:15) Night Rogaine with David Frei. 9:00 PM start. Map is enhanced USGS - acceptable for this sort of thing. I started feeling a little sick at just before midnight.

Friday Mar 18, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 52:00 [2]

Earlly morning spin around Forest Park in the 55" gear. Rode on the bike path, which I rarely do, but it was cold enough that not many people were out. Nearly crashed when I spotted another area that they just started tearing up and was looking at it to see if I needed to update the map and went off the path into the woods.

Thursday Mar 17, 2005 #

Running (Road) 55:00 [2]

Real easy lunchtime run with Jeff and Rusty.

Wednesday Mar 16, 2005 #

Cycling (Trail) 54:00 [3]

All the trails at Castlewood east of Stinging Nettle. Trails were in near perfect condition except for some of the flood plain which has a lot of sand after last month's flood. I was riding a perfectly straight and smooth section of the new trail from the ranger station to the Grotpeter crossing and for no apparent reason, my front wheel washed out. Just some scrapes, but very weird. The trail was off camber, but I'm not sure why traction would suddenly dissappear like that.

Monday Mar 14, 2005 #

Mapping 3:08:00 [1] ***

Touch up work on Cliff Cave map. All the fieldwork for the competition maps is now complete.

Sunday Mar 13, 2005 #

Running (Mix) 7:00 [2]

Warmup. It was pretty cold - a longer warmup would have been good.

Orienteering race (Woods) 1:52:35 [4] *** 15.9 km (7:05 / km) +360m 6:22 / km
spiked:35/30c

SLOC 2-hour score at S-F (1:15). As usual, the relatively flat terrain at S-F meant that clean navigation at speed was the premium. Had a good run but was getting a bit ragged near the end. Biggest error was around 30 seconds when I drifted off line in some really nasty scrub oak. Most of the woods was pretty open. Swept the course about 90 seconds ahead of David Frei to even the death match.

Saturday Mar 12, 2005 #

Mapping 1:40:00 [1] **

More touch-up work on Forest Park.

Running (Road) 1:29:00 [3]

After mapping, I met the Big Shark Tri team and ran two laps of the Forest Park bike path with them.

Friday Mar 11, 2005 #

Running (Road) 32:00 [2]

Over to park and back.

Orienteering (Park) 59:00 [4] **

Test running legs for the relay at Forest Park (1:10).

Thursday Mar 10, 2005 #

Running (Road) 48:00 [3]

Lunchtime run with Jeff Fromme. Fairly good tempo.

Wednesday Mar 9, 2005 #

Cycling (Trainer) 30:00 [2]

Long day at work catching up after two days off. Only had time for a lame ass spin on the trainer.

Tuesday Mar 8, 2005 #

Mapping 3:24:00 [1] **

More touch up work at Forest Park. Getting reasonably happy with the map - at least in the areas I'll be setting courses. Still grinding my teeth over the 2.5/5m decision. I like the 5m interval overall, but there are places where it's really hard to show the land without the intermediate line. I'm trying to keep form lines to a minimum.

Orienteering (Park) 37:00 [4] **

Test ran some legs for the relay. Includes about 10 minutes at warmup speed. The rest was near competition pace.

Monday Mar 7, 2005 #

Note

Was supposed to fly back to St. Louis. Only got as far as Detroit. At least Northwest was good enough to put us up in a decent motel.

Sunday Mar 6, 2005 #

Running (Mix) 2:07:00 [3]

Started from downtown Ithaca and went up South Hill via Quarry and King (900'), then back through town and up West Hill on 79 (800') and back to my parent's house. Ran mostly on the unpaved shoulder except for the four miles through the city.

Saturday Mar 5, 2005 #

Running (Road) 57:00 [2]

Easy pace on the farm roads near my parent's house.

Friday Mar 4, 2005 #

Cycling (Road) 55:00 [4]

5x800@72 using 60" gear. 3:30 recovery. Includes warmup/down.

Note

Flew to Ithaca in the evening for my sister's 40th birthday party tomorrow.

Thursday Mar 3, 2005 #

Running (Mix) 1:02:00 [2]

Variant of the Maplewood adventure loop. Mostly grass. Also some RR tracks, fence crossings and other urban obstacles as well as the obligatory few miles on concrete.

Wednesday Mar 2, 2005 #

Running (Road) 38:00 [3]

Lunchtime run with Jeff Fromme.

Cycling (Trail) 1:44:00 [4]

Chubb Trail from Lone Elk and back on Flint Quarry at a pretty good clip. Also rode around the bird sanctuary.

Tuesday Mar 1, 2005 #

Running (Road) 50:00 [3]

Moderate jog round the hood. NOT JUNK MILES!
