Orienteering (Woods) 1:07:00 [3]

Old Red course at Busse Woods (CAOC 1:10). Not quite the pace I was hoping for, but I wasn't reading the terrain that well. Not surprising, as I haven't been on flat stuff all year. -6F at the start.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:02:00 [3]

By end of the Busse run, the temp had rocketed to a balmy -1, so I went over to Deer Grove (CAOC 1:10) to do another course. Deer Grove has just enough relief (about 2% rather than .5% at Busse) that I was more comfortable. Still couldn't go that fast because the woods were thick.

Rolled my ankle near the end and from the swelling, it appears to be moderately serious. The usual ICE (Ice, Compression, Elevation) treatment is keeping things under control and I can still walk on it. I won't be running on it for a week anyway, because Kate & I are going to Italy with my sister. It will be Kate's first time away from baby-O.

Running (Field) 50:00 [3]

Across the frozen trundra of Kane County, IL. Yes, back in Chicago, but this time to the western burbs to visit Kate's cousins. Mostly long grass, but also some corn and bean fields. As it was 8F, everything was pretty much like lumpy concrete.

Cycling (Trainer) 1:00:00 [2]

Easy spinning on the trainer.

Running (Road) 54:00 [3]

Over to Big Shark and back with my shoes, helmet, and 6 pounds of water in the pack.

Cycling (Mix) 31:00 [3]

Test ride of the Specialized Stumpjumper that will replace my aging and ailing Marin. Not the most high tech bike on the market, but rock solid and lightweight.

I took it over to Forest Park and hammered what little singletrack there is there. Since everything is frozen I was able to do that without getting the bike dirty.

Running (Trail) 3:45:00 [2]

2 loops of Lewis trail with the SLUGs and then one lap of Clark on my own (at a significantly faster clip).

Orienteering (Woods/Night) 20:04 [4]
spiked:21/24c

David Frei's Christmas Party-O. Rather than running around his subdivision again, David mapped the trail network on a tiny park near his house. New format this year, also: there were 13 controls, all at trail junctions. At each control, you took a card (without looking) and your next control was the one that corresponded to that card. Most cards wins. Despite being on trail, the navigation was a bit tricky because you were constantly changing directions. Despite being 4 seconds overtime, I managed to have the high score.

Running (Road) 57:00 [3]

Around Navy Pier then along the lake to North Avenue beach. Back on Dearborn. If I had 5 million to spend on a house...

Running (Road) 58:00 [3]

Back in Chicago. Ran the Mile and then through Grant Park to the Field Museum where there was a loooong line of cars queued up for some black tie affair. Then along the lake and around Navy Pier. This would be an enjoyable run on almost any day, but on a crisp, clear night, with all the holiday lights out, it was simply fabulous. If money was no object, I'd live in the loop. But, it is, and I sure don't have half a million for a 1-bedroom condo.

Warmup

Orienteering (Woods) 1:04:36 [5] 8.6 km (7:31 / km) +410m 6:04 / km
spiked:16/20c

SLOC Holiday Party at Beaumont (Using F44/Beaumont map 1:15). 1-hour score-O. I intentionally went over to snag a couple good-pointers that cancelled out the penalty. David Frei and I ran pretty much the same route. He hammered the first 3K (which were pretty flat by Beaumont standards) and I figured if he could keep that up for an hour, he'd deserve the win. I kept in in sight with the help of a few small bobbles on his part and at midway, we were together. The pace caught up to him and I dropped him on the hills coming back for the win. With one event remaining, I've clinched the Death Match.

Cycling (Road) 1:51:00 [3]

Easy spinning for about 40 minutes at which point my hands and feet were frozen. Hit some hills to warm up a bit and then big ringed it back home.

Cycling (Road) 1:38:00 [2]

Got back to STL mid-afternoon. Didn't think it was worth going into the office for 2 billable hours (especially on so nice a day) so I got in a ride.

Running (Road) 2:11:00 [3]

In Jacksonville near my cousin's house. Cooler - high 60's. Since the Trot was shorter than expected, I upped my midweek run a bit. Includes a couple miles running on dirt roads and fields.

Tuesday Dec 7, 2004 #

Note

Flew to Jacksonville for some plant visits. Really warm down here - 80's with high humidity. Spent a little time after work walking along the riverfront.

Running (Trail) 20:00 [2]

Warmup.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:41:37 [4] 11.6 km (8:46 / km) +315m 7:43 / km
spiked:16/22c

Possum Trot VIII at Camp Naish (1:10). One of my better runs - only one big boom for about 3 minutes on a somewhat questionable control placement. Ran in a pack for the first half. Finished 3rd behind Platt and Everett. Spike, Frei, Aaker and Carr were all pretty close behind. See splits.

Saturday Dec 4, 2004 #

Running (Mix) 30:00 [2]

Warmup/down.

Orienteering (Woods) 35:05 [4] 4.7 km (7:28 / km) +138m 6:31 / km
spiked:10/16c

Kansas Champs at Tall Oaks (1:7500). Fun course had three loops which were run in different order. Despite the mass start, I was on my own pretty much the whole way. Ran conservatively and resonably accurately. 4th behind Platt, Everett, and Carr. Beat David to tie the death match. See splits.
