Running (Track) 46:00 [4]

4x800@2:52 400R. Felt like my workouts have lacked discipline lately, so I hit the track. First time on the new synthetic track at the High School. Definitely a big improvement over the old cinder & weeds. Also a step up from the 350m asphalt track at CBC that I had been running on. Nice to see something for my property tax dollars that have doubled in six years. Time includes jogging over to the track and back.

Sunday Aug 29, 2004 #

Paddling (Canoe) 1:09:00 [3]

At Creve Coeur Lake with Brad in front and Yvonne & Doug in the other boat. We tried towing a bit but decided it wasn't helping. Paddling will be our weak leg at Berryman.

Cycling (Mix) 1:24:00 [3]

Took the mountain bikes across the Page Bridge and rode the Katy Trail for a while. Not at all technical (we could have been on road bikes) but a good tempo.

Saturday Aug 28, 2004 #

Cycling (Trail) 48:00 [3]

Flint Quarry to the picnic table and then back on the Chubb plus some easy spinning over to Rt. 66 Park. Trail was still wet, which makes for a pretty demoralizing ride on the Chubb (grip=0).

Running (Trail) 1:34:00 [3]

After I got done riding, David Frei showed up and we ran the Tyson side of the Chubb and Flint Quarry both ways.

Orienteering (Woods) 52:00 [3]

At Castlewood. Originally planned a course on the flood plain, but I was wearing shorts and the stinging nettle is still pretty bad, so I switched to the ridges.

Running (Road) 26:00 [2]

The park closed for normal business at 8:15 and the night biking didn't start until 9:00, so I passed the time with an easy jog on the road.

Cycling (Trail) 40:00 [3]

Castlewood Night Ride. Flood plain trails were a mess after all the rain we've had this week, so I just did a lap of Grotpeter/Lone Wolf.

Orienteering (Woods/Night) 50:00 [2]

After the biking I snuck out into the woods for some night nav using the USGS map.

Wednesday Aug 25, 2004 #

Running (Road) 45:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood. Felt kinda dead - I haven't got enough sleep over the past week.

Tuesday Aug 24, 2004 #

Running (Road) 33:00 [2]

Jogged over to gym to go swimming only to find that annual maintenance is this week, not last. I wasn't too broke up about it since I don't really like swimming anyway. Went for an easy jog instead.

Sunday Aug 22, 2004 #

Paddling (Kayak) 1:40:00 [2]

With Yvonne Deyo (in her kayak) and Brad Baum & Doug Nishimura in the canoe. First time we've had the whole Berryman team together. Brad and Doug have never paddled before, but they did OK.

Cycling (Trail) 1:46:00 [3]

2xLost Valley trail, plus the out and back to Mt. Plutonium (Weldon Spring radiation cleanup site where Yvonne works). Brad & Doug had to split after the paddling, but Yvonne & I need more work on trails than they do anyway.

Running (Trail) 1:28:00 [3]

Lewis trail in 80 minutes plus the out and back to Mt. Plutonium.

Orienteering (Park) 1:10:00 [2]

Setting controls at Willmore & Francis (1:7.5). Meet went well. We had a bunch of JROTC's show up. This was a good venue for them.

Orienteering (Park) 18:25 [4] 3.4 km (5:25 / km) +30m 5:11 / km
spiked:11/11c

Picked up the short course at a good pace. SInce we used stakes, it was easy to snatch them out of the ground quick and keep running. ST=868.

Friday Aug 20, 2004 #

Running (Road) 24:00 [2]

Over to gym and back.

Swimming (Pool) 12:00 [4]

6x100@1:40, go on 2:00.

Thursday Aug 19, 2004 #

Cycling (Road) 2:45:00 [3]

West to Kirkwood, north to Creve Coeur Lake and back in through Clayton. Meant to refill my bottles at the lake, but got distracted by all the teams setting up for the drag boat races this weekend. Summer is back, so I was 5 pounds light at the end.

Wednesday Aug 18, 2004 #

Orienteering (Park) 58:00 [3]

AM: Test ran the course for Saturday's meet at Willmore (1:7.5). A few touch-ups are required on the old section of the map. ST=836.

Running (Trail) 56:00 [2]

PM: Night running of the Clark trail with Yvonne Deyo and Brad Baum. My headlamp batteries died (forgot to change them after my last night race), so I had to use the little LED keychain light I bought for emergencies. It worked surprisingly well and I didn't trip on anything.

Tuesday Aug 17, 2004 #

Note

Finished the cartography for the Willmore-Francis map.

Monday Aug 16, 2004 #

Mapping (Park) 2:25:00 [1]

The Parkway along the west edge of the Des Peres River. Basically concludes the fieldwork for the Willmore-Francis map although there are a few sections I wouldn't mind re-checking. Probably won't get much chance before the meet Saturday. (Just in time mapping leaves little room for error.)

Sunday Aug 15, 2004 #

Mapping (Park) 1:40:00 [1]

North part of Willmore Park. I didn't map this area when I made the original Willmore map because it's too long and narrow to be of much use. It is, however, the corridor that connects to Francis Park, so I need it for the combined map. Mama and Baby-O came along to enjoy the day.

Running (Road) 48:00 [3]

Felt like a firm pace, but was only a couple minutes faster than I usually run this loop. Can't blame the weather as we are in day 11 of Autumn in August. Maybe I just haven't been road running enough lately and have forgotten what pace feels like.

Saturday Aug 14, 2004 #

Running (Trail) 1:14:00 [2]

At Castlewood with Yvonne Deyo.

Cycling (Trail) 1:16:00 [3]

We followed the run with some mountain biking.

Friday Aug 13, 2004 #

Mapping 1:45:00 [1]

Francis Park, which is only a few blocks away from Willmore Park. Between the two parks, we have enough for a meet.

Thursday Aug 12, 2004 #

Running (Trail) 2:02:48 [4]

8th straight day of October conditions. If this is climate change, I'm buying an SUV. Figured I might try to break 2 hours for the Chubb Trail (which I've never done in the summer). Took it out too slow for that - got to Tyson end at 63:45 - but came back in 59:03 for something of a moral victory.

Wednesday Aug 11, 2004 #

Running (Road) 1:05:00 [3]

Moderate pace around Forest Park. Includes some trail running.

Tuesday Aug 10, 2004 #

Cycling (Road) 2:10:00 [2]

Legs aren't sore from Sunday, but they sure don't have much snap. Puttered around Forest Park for about an hour before heading over to Carondolet.

Cycling (Road) 50:00 [4]

Tuesday Night Crit #1. Rode traffic cop for Big Shark (sitting in the top 5 deciding which breaks to chase) for the first half, then got really tired. Dropped back into the field until the end. Since everything was together, I tried to stay with the windup for the sprint (which I almost never do, since I'm a lousy sprinter). Managed to stay in the sprint, but was out of the top 10.

Cycling (Road) 22:00 [3]

Tuesday Night Crit #2. The sprint got rid of whatever life was left in my legs, so I just sat in the field for the second race. Decided I should do something to justify my existance in the race, so I chased down a break and then called it quits.

Cycling (Road) 37:00 [2]

Back home, easy spin.

Sunday Aug 8, 2004 #

Cycling (Road) 40:00 [2]

Warmup. Was surprised more people weren't warming up on the course. Turns out that warming up on the course was against the rules. I'm not sure how you were supposed to know this.

Swimming 9:15 [4] 0.46 km (20:07 / km)

Babler Beast Triathlon. A bit pokey in the swim, expected to go about 30 seconds faster. Was 4:20 for the first 250 yds, then for some reason slowed to 4:55 for the second half.

Cycling (Road) 36:59 [5] 12.5 mi (2:58 / mi) +375m 2:42 / mi

Bike leg. Three very hilly loops. Passed a whole bunch of folks. Ended up using the road bike after talking to some folks who had done the race before. Probably the right choice, although I think the TT bike would have been just about as fast.

Running (Mix) 15:39 [4] 2.2 mi (7:07 / mi) +60m 6:33 / mi

Run leg was a mix of grass and paved trail. Not sure about the exact measurement (race flyer said 2.7 miles which was obviously way off). I'm estimating from the O-map.

Ran OK, but got a stitch at halfway and had to back off just a bit. Finished 13th overall, 3rd in M40+. Including transitions (which were both OK, but not great), my time was 63:30.

Running (Road) 9:00 [2]

Warmdown.

Saturday Aug 7, 2004 #

Cycling (Road) 1:41:00 [3]

Moderate tempo, no hills to speak of. River Des Peres to Grant's Trail. Had to get the ride in early so I could be back to get things setup for Baby-O's first birthday party. When I started at 6:30, it was only 55F - my hands actually hurt from the cold for a while.

Cycling (Road) 34:00 [2]

After standing around all afternoon in the sun (although the temperature was a very pleasant 80F) cooking burgers for our party guests, I felt kinda dead so I went out for a short spin to loosen up for tomorrow.

Thursday Aug 5, 2004 #

Running (Road) 33:00 [2]

Over to gym and the long way back.

Swimming 11:00 [3]

A couple laps warmup, then 500@8:45.

Wednesday Aug 4, 2004 #

Running (Road) 41:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood in the monsoon.

Tuesday Aug 3, 2004 #

Running (Road) 22:00 [2]

AM: Over to gym and back.

Swimming 20:00 [4]

AM: 8x100@97 alternating go on 2:00, 2:30.

Cycling (Road) 39:00 [2]

Spinning over to the park and some easy laps between races.

Cycling (Road) 50:00 [4]

Tuesday Night Crit #1. Really hot tonight, but the pace was still good. Sat in the field most of the time. One big effort to spring fellow Shark Aaron Inch across the gap to the break. He went on to take third while I slipped back into the field.

Cycling (Road) 36:00 [4]

Tuesday Night Crit #2. Got in what appeared to be a good break about halfway through. Then, after three laps they all decided they had had enough. I continued on solo for a couple more laps before getting caught. Wierd. Another break went and got caught with 2 to go so I countered solo, but was caught as the sprint started winding up.

Cycling (Road) 40:00 [3]

Felt surprisingly good today so I took a longer route home at good tempo.

Sunday Aug 1, 2004 #

Cycling (Road) 25:00 [2]

Once again, the early morining drive to the middle of the state meant a shorter than optimal warmup. Still, I was glad to be one of the early starters (20 of 120) since that kept me out of the heat.

Cycling (Road) 59:48 [5] 40.0 km (1:30 / km)

Missouri TT Champs. Flat, exposed course along the Missouri River in Jeff City. The 1-hour club isn't nearly as exclusive as it was back when men were men and rode bikes with spoked wheels and drop handlebars. Still, I'll take a membership any way I can get it, even if it is 5 minutes off a PR (I'll never see that time again).

Probably could have taken it out a bit harder as the mild headwind going out wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. 10K Splits: 16:05, 15:10, 14:30 (sort of a cross wind coming back - wasn't much help), 14:03. 5th in M40+.

Cycling (Road) 27:00 [2]

Warmdown.

Note

After warming down and changing, I drove the Big Shark van around the course to pick up any stragglers. Got one taker - a woman whose stem let go so the handlebars were just spinning freely. How did she possibly keep it upright when that happened?

Glutton for punishment award has to go to the guy who rode it on a mountain bike. Not that 40K on a mountain bike is that big of a deal, but how much fun can it be trudging down a highway on fat tires with riders blowing by you at nearly twice your speed?
