Cycling (Road) 2:02:00 [2]

Easy miles in the 60" gear.

Tuesday Mar 30, 2004 #

Orienteering (Woods) 1:11:00 [3]

At West Tyson (1:10). Warmed up with an old prologue course from the Prologue and Chase back in 1997. 3K, easy navigation, not too insane on the climb. Followed by 4K training course that used point features (yes, there are point features at Tyson) and had the usual crazy Tyson climb.

Didn't push too hard on the uphills - was using the session more for training my speed on traverses and descents. Did pretty well except for one face plant (on trail!) that scraped me up a bit. No serious damage. ST=504.

Cycling (Road) 4:25:00 [3]

Big Shark ride. Big group (12) for such threatening weather. The heavy stuff didn't hit until after the ride was over - we got off and on showers.

Easy pace out Clayton and Manchester to Greensfelder. Then the 50 MPH descent down to Six Flags in the rain which got the heart rate elevated. Followed by the Hornecker loop (2 solid climbs) and the grind back up to Greensfelder all taken at race tempo. Moderate tempo back (into the wind) followed by a few easy miles to warm down.

Running (Road) 12:00 [2]

Warmup with Dave Frei. Felt like crap. That didn't worry me too much because I often feel bad during warmup and then run well. Also, Dave warms up at a slightly faster pace than me.

Orienteering (Woods) 56:23 [4] 7.0 km (8:03 / km) +270m 6:45 / km
spiked:6/8c

SLOC meet at Beaumont (1:15). Apparently Dave runs through the woods a little faster than me, too - he got me by 3 minutes (death match now 3-1 Dave). I was basically clean except for one stupid bobble at a trail junction right near the end.

Warm and humid, the hills were tough. Rick Armstrong set courses and had some mercy on us providing some good around routes on trail.

Orienteering (Woods) 52:00 [2]

Control pickup. Brought along some intermediate runners and explained a few things as we went. ST=486.

Running (Road) 32:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood. Hamstrings are sore - probably from yesterday.

Thursday Mar 25, 2004 #

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 1:10:00 [3]

First trip back to the do jang since baby-O was born. Really rusty.

Tae Kwon Do (Cardio) 40:00 [4]

Mostly punches. My arms will be sore for a few days.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:19:35 [4] 9.0 km (8:51 / km) +360m 7:22 / km
spiked:14/18c

Blue course from the Babler meet I put on in 1998 (1:15). Ran easy for the first 2K (no warmup, but it was mostly downhill anyway) then ran hard. Good run, kept focus throughout. I seem to recall Rich Ruid won the meet with a time in the high 70's. ST=473.

Tuesday Mar 23, 2004 #

Running (Road) 21:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood.

Sunday Mar 21, 2004 #

Orienteering (Woods) 1:10:00 [2]

Control pickup. ST=455.

Note

Hawn meet went well. I'm pretty tired.

Saturday Mar 20, 2004 #

Orienteering (Woods) 1:09:00 [3]

Picking up a few controls and then re-hanging for day 2. All easy locations, so I ran a bit faster. ST=445.

Friday Mar 19, 2004 #

Orienteering (Woods) 5:01:00 [2]

Hanging Day 1 controls for the A-meet at Hawn (1:15). Decent upper body workout, too since some of the water carries were over a kilometer. ST=416.

Wednesday Mar 17, 2004 #

Note

Nothing like putting on an A-meet to torque your training plans. At least I got to sit around all night talking about orienteering while sorting controls, stuffing packets, etc.. Maybe that counts as something.

Sunday Mar 14, 2004 #

Map Running (Trail) 2:51:00 [3]

Wandering around the trails of Greensfelder and Rockwoods Reservation. Solid pace for most although I did take it easy on some of the steeper climbs.

Saturday Mar 13, 2004 #

Cycling (Road) 4:38:00 [3]

Easy pace to Kirkwood only to find that nobody else showed up for the Big Shark ride (strange on such a nice day - maybe it got moved and nobody told me). Then over Weber Hill and into Jefferson County for some more small climbs winding up at Six Flags for two big efforts on my favorite hills: Allentown Rd (smoked in 5:27) and Woods Rd. Moderate tempo back in on Clayton Rd.

Note

They've put a pretty little traffic circle in Manchester Rd just east of the Woods Rd. summit. Now you can pretend you're blasting on to Liege having crested the Côte de la Redoute (or, if you dump it, you can pretend you're Jan Ullrich hammering into Nantes in last year's Tour). The fantasy lasts about another 90 seconds at which point you hit the always red light at route 100.

Map Running (Trail) 24:00 [2]

Warmup/down.

Orienteering (Woods) 35:42 [5] 5.0 km (7:08 / km) +190m 6:00 / km
spiked:11/12c

Rockwoods (1:15) test loop. 1-2 minutes slow for this time of year, but not surprising considering my complete lack of speedwork lately. Still faster than Dave Frei has ever done it. ST=360.

Monday Mar 8, 2004 #

Running (Road) 40:00 [3]

Moderate jog round the hood.

Saturday Mar 6, 2004 #

Orienteering (Woods) 3:28:00 [2]

Vetting the advanced courses for day 1 of the A-meet at Hawn (1:15). Should have had the meet this weekend - conditions were perfect. Should be pretty nice in two weeks, too. Although I didn't need much, I carried a full Camelbak to get used to having some weight on my back. ST=348.

Friday Mar 5, 2004 #

Running (Mix) 38:00 [2]

A loop around Queeny with Baby-O in the jogger. Near the end we were going into the wind and she got pissed because it was making her cold.

Wednesday Mar 3, 2004 #

Running (Road) 42:00 [3]

Moderate jog round the hood.

Tuesday Mar 2, 2004 #

Running (Road) 19:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood.
