Swimming (Therapy) 30:00 [1]
(injured)

Same drill as before (no laps).

Swimming 40:00 [3]
(injured)

My back is feeling a lot better (but still definitely not right) so I decided to try a real workout. Two sets of 10x50m@48 with a minute of treading water in between each lap.

Swimming (Therapy) 30:00 [1]
(injured)

AM therapy. Same drill as before. I'm seeing the doctor again this afternoon. Hopefully, he'll give me the OK to start doing some more interesting stuff.

Swimming 30:00 [2]
(injured)

Doc said I could go ahead and swim a lap in between treading water. Still a fairly lame workout, but at least my pulse got above 140.

Swimming (Therapy) 30:00 [1]
(injured)

AM. Two 15-minute treading water sessions (1 min on, 1 off) interleaved with sitting in the hot tub and stretching in the steam room.

Swimming (Therapy) 30:00 [1]
(injured)

More exciting times treading water after work.

Swimming (Therapy) 40:00 [1]
(injured)

Saw the PT again - he was pleased with my progress. I went into work for about 6 hours, but sitting down is not good so I had to get up and walk around every 15 minutes. After work I did two more sessions of hot tub/treading water.

Swimming (Therapy) 40:00 [1]
(injured)

Didn't go to work today because I can't stay upright for much more than 20 minutes. I went the the physical therapist who told me to try treading water. So I did two 20-minute sessions of 1 minute treading and 1 minute just hanging on the side of the pool. Sat in the hot tub between sessions.

Swimming (Therapy) 20:00 [1]

Went back again in the evening for another session. Some improvement noted.

Note

After an injury free O season, I managed to wreck my back taking apple juice out of the fridge. This is a recurring injury stemming from a curved spine, but I haven't had trouble with it for the last five years or so.

Gym 31:00 [2]

Time to start strength training again. Easy sets to get used to the motions again.

Sunday Dec 15, 2002 #

Running (Grass) 20:00 [2]

Warmup. Did a good job of bandaging the blisters so they didn't hurt too much. Was still pretty stiff from yesterday, but felt OK by the end of my warmup.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:13:25 [4] 9.5 km (7:44 / km) +190m 7:02 / km
spiked:23/31c

SLOC Holiday Score-O at Shaw Arboretum (1:10). Had a really good run with only minor errors. Most of the controls were intermediate level and there was a fair bit of trail running. Probably could have got one more, but I knew I was close on time (75 min limit). Finished first ahead of Gary Thompson and Dave Frei. ST=1340/2091.

Note

That's a wrap for 2002. Mixed results in the major goals:

1) 70 pts on Blue. Sucess (will probably have to wait some time for confirmation, but it looks like I hit this one easily).

2) Top 3 in M35+ at US Long. N/A. Missed the event due to work.

3) Top 3 at US 24. Depends on how you count it: 4th overall, 3rd US eligible, 2nd in Open. Guess I'll take half a point on that one.

Of course, the really important result didn't go my way. Dave Frei wins the death match 13-12.

Running (Trail) 30:00 [2]

Warmup/Down.

Running (Trail) 1:00:57 [5] 7.5 mi (8:08 / mi)

Yeah, I know, how can 8 minute miles be a 5. Well, this is the Pere Marquette Trail Run and trust me, this was pretty much all out. Followed Dave Frei over the first hill, but then he faded and finished a couple minutes back.

Was 42 seconds slower than last year in what seemed to be similar conditions, but the whole field was off, so maybe something was different. Up to 21st overall (from 31st last year). Won the Clydesdale division (over 200 pounds) again, but would have taken 2nd in 35-39, so this is my best finish at this race.

Note

Hadn't worn my spikes in a while so I forgot that I need to tape my heel when I run in them. They gave me a nasty blister on the back of each heel.

Friday Dec 13, 2002 #

Running (Road) 18:00 [3]

Moderate pace to loosen up for tomorrow. I'm not nearly recovered enough for a running race, but I'll give it my best. At least we can look forward to muddy conditions on the trail which should slow me down less than the roadies.

Thursday Dec 12, 2002 #

Running (Road) 19:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood. Right ankle is stiff again.

Tuesday Dec 10, 2002 #

Running (Road) 33:00 [2]

Easy recovery run. Muscles hurt (no suprise there), but the good news is that my knees, ankles, and feet seem to be doing well.

Sunday Dec 8, 2002 #

Running (Grass) 15:00 [2]

Warmup.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:46:56 [4] 14.1 km (7:35 / km) +390m 6:40 / km
spiked:9/11c

Possum Trot 6 at Knob Noster (1:15). Managed to stay with the lead pack for the first part of the race, which was a blast. Actually 21 controls, but I won't take credit for spiking the 10 controls that I follow people into. One bad boom on the way to 14 (only 2 minutes, but really brainless), but other than that maintained a good pace even after splitting from the group at half way. Easily the best O result of my life. Finished 4th behind May, Everett, and Eglinski. ST=1340/2060.

Saturday Dec 7, 2002 #

Running (Grass) 20:00 [2]

Warmup

Orienteering (Park) 31:30 [5] 4.7 km (6:42 / km) +110m 6:00 / km
spiked:10/10c

MO/KS champs at Clinton Lake (1:10). Basically a cross country meet since it was mass start and the difficulty was yellow/orange. You had to pick two of four controls to start and then do 8 more in order. I picked wrong and was deep in the pack going into the rest of the course. Backed off a bit near then end when it was clear I wasn't going to finish well.

Friday Dec 6, 2002 #

Running (Road) 29:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood.

Thursday Dec 5, 2002 #

Running (Road) 18:00 [3]

Moderate jog round the hood. Things are healing up nicely.

Wednesday Dec 4, 2002 #

Note

Dropped by Forest Park for the Wednesday run, but nobody showed. Can't say I was dissappointed as the weather was really nasty and I had to go back into work anyway.

Monday Dec 2, 2002 #

Running (Road) 19:00 [2]

Still feeling pretty beat up. My right ankle seems to be the biggest problem - slight pain in the outside tendons and also some ligament damage where the foot got bent up too much towards the knee. All under the heading of normal wear and tear, but it's starting to add up. I think I'll take a few weeks out of the woods after the Trot.

Sunday Dec 1, 2002 #

Note

Rest day - super beat up after yesterday. The knee is all swollen again after a couple of falls and 3 hours in spikes was a bit more than my feet could take. Should be able to get myself back together for the Trot next weekend.
