Running (Road) 28:00 [3]

Moderate jog round the hood. Legs have a bit more bounce in them - should be OK for champs this weekend.

Tuesday Oct 29, 2002 #

Running (Road) 29:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood. Still a bit stiff from Saturday.

Sunday Oct 27, 2002 #

Orienteering (Woods) 1:44:00 [3]

More constant contact work at Hawn (old map, 1:15). Three courses, 2.5-3K each. It was a little difficult to stay in contact in some places because the map is so out of date. ST=1072/1782.

Note

That pretty much wraps up my fall preparation. Now I'll just focus on recovery and staying healty. I'd say this was some of my best technical training, but at the expense of some fitness. It will be interesting to see how things pan out. On the schedule are:

11/02-03: US Classic (Red)
11/09-10: Open, might do a local meet in Chicago or KC.
11/17: Billy Pig
11/23-24: Open
11/30: Turkey-O (3 hour score)
12/07-08: Kansas Champs & Possum Trot
12/16: Pere Marquette Trail Run

That set of races (minus US Champs) went really well last year, so I'll have a good basis for comparison.

Running (Grass) 15:00 [2]

Warmup. Felt like I was running at altitude; not a good sign.

Running (Trail) 35:09 [5] 5.0 mi (7:02 / mi)

Wild Woods Trail Run. Sloppy conditions, but generally an easy trail technically. I kept moving up on the uneven sections and then dropping back when things were smooth. Finished 9th which I wasn't very happy with considering the relatively weak field.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:35:00 [3]

Here's a way to make a bad day worse: get a speeding ticket leaving a crappy race. After my brief encounter with the Missouri State Police, I did some constant contact drills at Cuivre River (1:15). Three courses, each about 3K. Stayed pretty focused; made a couple minor mistakes.

Friday Oct 25, 2002 #

Running (Road) 19:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood.

Thursday Oct 24, 2002 #

Orienteering (Woods) 39:00 [3]

Setting controls for SLOC training at Castlewood (1:15).

Note

Took a group of beginners on a Beaver-O during the training while the advanced runners did the course I set.

Wednesday Oct 23, 2002 #

Running (Road) 30:00 [3]

Felt a bit unmotivated today, but training has been going well so I didn't get down about it. Just went for a short road run.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:32:00 [3]

Legs are still a bit shot from last weekend, so I drove down to St. Francios (1:15) to do some constant contact practice. 3 courses of 2K each with 6-7 controls per course. Used the subtle section of the map near the river. Navigated pretty well, but ran into a barb wire fence as the sun was setting and tore myself up pretty good. I'll have to get a tetanus shot tomorrow.

Running (Grass) 26:00 [2]

Warmup/down.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:07:59 [4] 7.4 km (9:11 / km) +175m 8:13 / km
spiked:7/14c

CAOC Red course at Palos North (1:15). First three controls were memory-O, then you had to copy from a master map (time above doesn't count 2:51 of copying). Was running a bit ragged, but fast through 10, then my concentration fell apart and I boomed 3 of the last 4 controls, giving away around 5 minutes. Had fourth best time on Red.

Orienteering (Woods) 53:00 [2]

Control pickup. Had to go a bit slower than usual because my back started hurting - too much driving and crashing through thick woods for one weekend! ST=998/1708.

Note

My little "Tour of Illinois" was fun and interesting. The contrast between the two little clubs (where the competition, maps, and courses were definately "local" level) and CAOC which runs over 200 people through A-meet quality courses was dramatic. I hope CIOC and IRVOC keep trying, because their meets were fun. I imagine SLOC and CAOC were putting on similar events 25 years ago.

Running (Grass) 15:00 [2]

AM: warmup/down.

Orienteering (Woods) 26:14 [4] 3.2 km (8:12 / km) +50m 7:36 / km
spiked:6/9c

CIOC meet at Camp Cilca (1:7.5). Didn't know what to expect from this as I've never done a meet hosted by this tiny club in Illinois. I was pleased to see that the map was made by Mike Minium (I wouldn't have been surprised to get a B&W park service map). Course was on the easy side of Orange, but basically good with some interesting route choice legs. Unfortunately, they copied the circle for #7 onto the wrong place on my map. Time doesn't count hunting around for about 3 minutes before giving up on it.

Running (Grass) 27:00 [2]

Evening: warmup/down.

Orienteering (Woods) 35:07 [4] 3.6 km (9:45 / km) +30m 9:22 / km
spiked:6/9c

IRVOC meet at Evergreen Lake (approx 1:7.5 - yes, that's what the scale said, approximately!) Another little Illinois club I'd never tried before. This map was closer to what I had expected (as in, pretty rough) but at least it was still 5-color. Another light side of Orange course, although darkness makes everything a bit more challenging. One big boom in a sketchy area, but everything else was OK - at least by Night-O standards.

Orienteering (Woods) 49:00 [2]

Control pickup. Took one of the novices with me and explained what we were doing as we went.

Thursday Oct 17, 2002 #

Orienteering (Woods) 42:00 [2]

Hanging controls for SLOC practice.

Map Running (Woods) 28:00 [3]

SLOC Thursday training at Castlewood (1:15). Since I both made that map and hung the controls, this wasn't exactly navigation practice.

Wednesday Oct 16, 2002 #

Map Running (Park) 1:23:00 [4]

5x533m@1:50-2:15 on Forest Park (1:10). Measured out 5 legs on O-map through open terrain with moderate climb (meant to be 800m, but I forgot which scale I was using). As pennance for shortening the intervals, I joined the Wednesday night run on the bike path. Started with the leaders, but after we went through the first mile in 6:45, I dropped back to the 7:30 group for another 3 before jogging home.

Tuesday Oct 15, 2002 #

Orienteering (Woods) 1:22:00 [4]

Ran an old red course at Greensfelder (1:15). Pushed hard on the hills (of which there are plenty at Greensfelder). Includes warmup. ST=974/1649.

Sunday Oct 13, 2002 #

Running (Mix) 30:00 [2]

Warmup/down.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:47:37 [4] 7.4 km (14:33 / km) +120m 13:27 / km
spiked:13/18c

Great Lakes Challenge Day 2 Red (Prospect Hill, 1:15). So much for protecting a lead. Boomed 3 & 4 badly (12 and 14 minute errors, respectively). I have no experience relocating on this glacial stuff and am obviously not very good at it. Ran well from 5 on, but the damage was done. Wound up 4th on Red for both days (1st M35, but there was only 1 other guy). ST=961/1636.

Saturday Oct 12, 2002 #

Running (Mix) 45:00 [2]

Warmup/down.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:09:43 [4] 7.3 km (9:33 / km) +150m 8:40 / km
spiked:14/16c

Great Lakes Challenge Day 1 Red (Prospect Hill, 1:15). 6K of really cool orienteering and a ridiculous 1K road run around a gravel pit. Map is a color copy on plain paper! What's up with that? Completely illegible. What's worse, we weren't given clue sheets so you had to unfold the map at each control if you wanted to check the code. Why? There was a ROGAINE going on simultaneously that used the controls for BOTH DAYS. What total BS. This whole meet should be thrown out, but why bother since so few people showed up. Had fast time on Red, for what it was worth.

Friday Oct 11, 2002 #

Orienteering (Woods) 1:30:00 [2]

Practice on SMOC's Mill Lake map (1:15). Eastern part of the map has aged remarkably well. Western part was all wrong.

Thursday Oct 10, 2002 #

Orienteering (Woods) 35:00 [3]

SLOC Thursday training at Castlewood 1:15. Short course on the south flood plain.

Wednesday Oct 9, 2002 #

Orienteering (Woods) 1:20:00 [3]

Constant contact practice at Babler (1:15). Three short courses (about 20 min. each) with 7 or 8 controls per course. Pretty dense vegetation still at Babler. Moved well, but didn't push really hard. Focused on staying in contact with the map at all times. Time includes some jogging before/between/after. ST=905/1580.

Tuesday Oct 8, 2002 #

Running (Track) 42:00 [4]

6x400m@80 with 300m recovery. Was planning on running more like 84-85, but with the weather cooling off 80's felt OK. Time includes jogging to/from the track.

Monday Oct 7, 2002 #

Orienteering (Woods) 55:19 [4] 6.8 km (8:08 / km) +330m 6:33 / km
spiked:9/10c

At Rockwoods Range (1:15). Hammered a red course set by Orlyn Skrien who's back in town for a couple weeks. Was really pleased with both my fitness and focus. I'll be happy if I can run as well in Michigan this weekend. ST=880/1555.

Sunday Oct 6, 2002 #

Running (Mix) 1:22:00 [3]

St. Louis Hash Run #987. Great trail set by BB King with lots of streams, woods, etc. even though we were in mid county. Time includes running home afterwards.

Saturday Oct 5, 2002 #

Orienteering (Woods) 58:00 [3]

Hanging controls at Castlewood (1:15).

Running (Trail) 35:00 [2]

Runnin around doin' meet director type stuff like getting water out on the course, etc.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:00:00 [3]

Control pickup. The meet went really well. I'm happy that people liked the map (although it does still have some rough spots that I avoided). A lot of the long-time SLOC'ers were out for this one, which is good since they move a bit slower and tend to notice problems with the map more than the fast guys who just run through ambiguous areas. Congrats to Yvonne Deyo for smoking everybody on the red course.

Friday Oct 4, 2002 #

Orienteering (Woods) 2:04:00 [3]

Hanging markers for tomorrow's meet at Castlewood (1:15).

Thursday Oct 3, 2002 #

Orienteering (Woods) 1:41:00 [2]

SLOC Thursday training at Castlewood (old map - 1:10). Set up training course, then did some taping for the meet on Saturday.

Wednesday Oct 2, 2002 #

Running (Track) 40:00 [4]

8x200m@37 with 150m recovery. Includes jogging over to track and back.

Tuesday Oct 1, 2002 #
