Warmup.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:00:00 [3] **
10c shoes: Oroc 280

SLOC 3-Hour at Raging Rivers (1:7.5 USGS). We've got enough Adventure Racers in the club that I guess it makes sense to do a couple events geared to them. I have no problem with that, though I certainly wish they had picked something other than my favorite event of the year to do it. After about half an hour I had pretty much had it with the vague map and crappy woods and turned back, picking up just a few more controls on the way in. As expected, David won easily.

Terrain (Mix) 2:02:00 [2] **
shoes: Oroc 280

I had anticipated the above scenario and had a backup plan to just run long. Did an out & back along the river and then a loop through the competition area on "roads" (which were really just cuts through the woods otherwise unimproved).

Terrain (Grass) 41:00 [2] *
shoes: Speedcross 3

Two School Loop. Was supposed to be a pre-run for the T&C 5K, but I decided I wasn't really in the mood for running a local "5K" that was really only 2.9 miles.
8 AM

Running (Road) 1:28:00 [2]
shoes: Speedstar 6

So I just ran to the theater to get tickets for The Hunger Games which Yaya has been very much itching to see.

New School Loop.

Running (Road) 1:02:00 [2]
shoes: Sayonara 2

To work to pick up my car (Kate picked me from work yesterday on the way to wine club). Run isn't as much longer as I thought. That's the end of the good news though. Running straight down Olive simply sucks. If I did it every day I would quit due to despair.

Easy jog round the hood.

Terrain (Trail) 1:32:00 [3] ***
shoes: Lone Peak

4x Love Loop@10:35 go on 13:00.
Yes, it's pretty ideal conditions but, if tempo for this loop at Castlewood really is 10:35 (and the fact that all were within a couple seconds indicates it is) then things are looking up.

Monday Nov 24, 2014 #

5 AM

Running (Road) 32:00 [2]
(rest day) shoes: Speedstar 6

Easy jog round the hood.

Sunday Nov 23, 2014 #

7 AM

Running (Road) 2:03:00 [2]
shoes: Speedstar 6

Easy miles around Champaign (came up yesterday for my niece's 4th bday). Wanted to satiate my predilection for my favorite surface (brick) which took some hunting as several of the roads I typically use have been repaved. Found about four miles on Clark and High streets.

Saturday Nov 22, 2014 #

5E 6M 1T 5M 1T 1M 2E no recovery. Ran first M mile and last T and M mile on track to make sure I wasn't cheating on pace (wasn't; splits: 6:43, 6:19, 6:39).

Tuesday Nov 18, 2014 #

4 PM

Terrain (Grass) 58:00 [2] **
shoes: Speedcross 3

Cuatro Electrico. About an inch of snow on the powerline.

Monday Nov 17, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

While I haven't failed any quality workouts so far this cycle, I've had rather high anxiety over them. That almost always indicates I'm pushing too hard. So, I took the day off.

Sunday Nov 16, 2014 #

7 AM

Terrain (Grass) 49:00 [2] **
shoes: Speedcross 3

Four School Loop. The half inch of snow last night was less than predicted, but still half an inch more than our usual pre-Thanksgiving total.
1 PM

Terrain (Trail) 2:18:00 [3] **
shoes: Rocklite 315

4T 4:00R 3T 3:00R 2T 2:00R 1T on the Al Foster trail. Rest of the run was easy miles on Stinging Nettle and Cedar Bluff. Snowing fairly had at the start, but then slowed down and didn't accumulate much more than an inch.

Saturday Nov 15, 2014 #

8 AM

Terrain (Grass) 41:00 [2] *

Powerline out and back.
2 PM

Orienteering (Woods) 1:29:00 [2] ***
31c shoes: Oroc 280

Control picking at Babler (1:15). Orienteering has obviously not been a priority this year. Still it would be nice to show up at the three hour with something of a clue. Nav was OK. Getting through the thick stuff with only one arm didn't work very well. Hopefully the shoulder will heal up in the next fortnight. Probably won't matter though. SLOC has gone all Adventure Race style complete with UTM plotting on what I assume will be a USGS-based map. David will crush me in such a contest.

Friday Nov 14, 2014 #

9 AM

Terrain (Trail) 1:50:00 [2] ***
shoes: Speedcross 3

Wholehearted plus a bit more at the start because Yaya forgot her homework so I had to drop it off at Ross. 8 striders at the end.

Terrain (Trail) 2:29:00 intensity: (1:29:00 @2) + (1:00:00 @4) ***
weight:170lbs shoes: Lone Peak

6xLewis East Hill@2:35 equal R. Plus a full loop of Lewis and the out & back from RGA West.

Wasn't at all sure how I'd fare on this one as last night was an all-nighter at work. Felt fine and pace was right where I'd want it to be for the repeats. Probably last time at RGA West as they are all moving to the new HQ over the next two weeks, so I really wanted to get this one in. The fact that it was the first winter run of the season helped, too. Grey sky, small bite in the air, ground not frozen but definitely getting hard, and a few flurries dancing in the light breeze. So fine!

New School Loop.

Running (Road) 1:27:00 [2]

Old Farm + Electric Duck. Was rather dreading this one on account of the forecast (40F + rain), but it turned out to be really nice. Closer to 50 and the rain didn't start until the last 5 minutes (and even then it was very light).

Monday Nov 10, 2014 #

7 AM

Terrain (Grass) 38:00 [2] **
(rest day)

Two School Barefoot Loop.

Sunday Nov 9, 2014 #

12 PM

Terrain (Mix) 3:32:00 [2] **

A couple dozen miles easy. About 75 min on trail at Longview and Queeny. The rest on grass.

Saturday Nov 8, 2014 #

6 AM

Orienteering (Woods) 1:36:00 [2] ***
30c shoes: Rocklite 315

Placing the remaining controls and putting epunch units on all of them at CC Lake (1:10).
1 PM

Orienteering (Woods) 32:00 [2] ***
10c shoes: Rocklite 315

Control pickup. Meet went well. Turnout was fair, but I wouldn't have wanted more since I was running it with only a few helpers. Those who came seemed to enjoy it. David and Emily smoked their respective genders.

Friday Nov 7, 2014 #

6 AM

Terrain (Grass) 35:00 [2] *
shoes: Rocklite 315

Two School Loop. Off this morning since I'm working until midnight. At this point things were quite OK.
9 AM

Orienteering (Woods) 1:37:00 [1] ***
18c shoes: Speedcross 3

And then things started not going so well. Got a little behind because Kate's printer was out of ink, so when I went over to CC Lake to put out controls, I forgot to bring my bag which has my whistle and the bright lanyard which I attach to my keys. Naturally, today was the day that I tripped and dislocated my shoulder (again; I think that's #15 but I've honestly lost count). No problem to reset it, but I forgot to check if I'd dropped anything. About half an hour later I realized my keys were gone. No chance in finding a black key fob in the leaves, though I did check. So, shoulder hurts like hell, I'm out about $300 for a new key fob, and I didn't get done...

Terrain (Grass) 49:00 [2] *
shoes: Speedcross 3

... because I had to run back home to get my other keys. At least the remaining locations are the easy ones, so I should be able to get them out in the morning with time to spare. Then again...

2x4T 1R.
While completely accurate, those six characters seem woefully inadequate for describing the brutality of split tempo.

Old Farm Loop.

Monday Nov 3, 2014 #

5 AM

Running (Road) 1:32:00 [2]

Big Lake Paved. Six striders at the end.
4 PM

Running (Track) 52:00 [4]
shoes: Grid A2

4x800@2:56 400R. Wasn't sure if I could do six on pace and decided I'd rather run fewer at the right speed than the right number too slow. Target, of course, is to do ten at this pace, but I don't expect to get there for another month or so.

Sunday Nov 2, 2014 #

6 AM

Terrain (Grass) 49:00 [2] *
shoes: Rocklite 315

Four School Loop. Moving OK but still a decided deadness in the stride. Moving the Q workout to tomorrow (just as well since I really need to finalize my courses for next Saturday).
1 PM

Terrain (Grass) 46:00 [2] *
shoes: Speedcross 3

Over to CC Lake and back on the powerline.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:15:00 [2] ***
25c shoes: Speedcross 3

Checking controls for the meet. Stinging nettle hasn't died down yet; that ought to make things fun for anybody who decides to run it in shorts.

Saturday Nov 1, 2014 #

7 AM

Running (Road) 1:16:00 [2]
shoes: Sayonara 2

FFRC run. Nothing hurt, but I had no spring at all.
