Was going to run home from work but that turned out to be a non-starter. Running hard workouts in the heat has some value. Easy runs in the heat completely defeats the purpose. So I drove home and just went for an easy spin in the 60 around CC Lake.

Chubb from Lone Elk. Was supposed to meet the SLUGs at Tyson at 8, but I either missed them or nobody showed. Chubb is not a good trail to run as recovery by yourself. It's not that you can't run it easy (you can and I did), it's just mind-numbingly slow.

Duck(P)@19:30. Baseline for this cycle. Suggests a VDOT of around 52 which is certainly lower than I'd like, but probably right.

4xFaust North Hill@2:10, equal R then immediately South Hill@3:30 plus over and back from work on grass.

No baseline for these so was running entirely by feel. I expect North Hill will be just under 2 minutes at I-effort when my fitness comes back. South hill should be somewhere around 3:10-3:15.

And under the heading of things that may only interest me (and possibly maprunner), South Hill, East Hill, and West Hill have been in my place names vocabulary for so long they are almost common nouns. As I write this entry, however, North Hill seems weird. There should always be a lake to the north.

Warm up/down.

Running race (Road) 20:14 [4] 5.0 km (4:03 / km)
shoes: Grid A2

MO Senior Games 5K (running). As I was just coming back from layoff and I had another race 3 hours later, I stuck to my strategy of running just fast enough to be third, which qualifies me for nats next year. Ended up second M50 because the second place overall was older.
10 AM

Cycling (Road) 1:18:00 [2]
shoes: Bike: Felt TT

Already 90F, so I wasn't needing to be warm, but I didn't want to stiffen up either, so I soft pedaled for a while, including riding the course and then did a few firm efforts right near the end to get my HR up for the start.

Cycling race (Road) 7:03 [5] 5.0 km (1:25 / km)
shoes: Bike: Felt TT

MO Senior Olympics 5K (cycling). Well, that's what it was advertised as, anyway. About 2 miles in I passed a couple folks taking times on the side of the road. Figured that was a split and didn't pay it any mind. Then I really got on the gear for the last 1500m only to find nobody at the finish (which was a very clearly marked line with 5K written above it). Turns out they modified the course and didn't tell anybody, which pretty much invalidated the results since all the good riders were holding back knowing the final 800m was uphill. Happy with the time for 5K (from my own watch, obviously). No idea what my official time or finish was because I was too pissed to stick around for results.

Cycling (Road) 16:00 [2]
shoes: Bike: Felt TT

Soft pedaled back to the start (it was a 1-way course), put the bike in the car, and got the hell out of there before I said a bunch of unkind things I'd regret later.

As of this writing, I'm glad I did that. I was really just doing the bike for kicks, so there was no reason to be an ass about it. Back in STL, we had our annual church music ministry party, which was great fun and would have been less so if I thought I had been a poor example of my faith earlier in the day.

Faust perimeter loop from work with six striders thrown in at the end. Super hot. Most of the run was very easy footing; listed as 3 stars because I was intentionally striking on all the sharp stones on the descent to test out the rock plate in the Altras. Seemed to offer adequate protection, so these are now my nasty trail race shoes.

Around the hotel. If you want to make an easy jog feel like the end of a marathon, take three weeks off and then run up a mountain the day before.

... Which means it's time to do something really silly like run up a volcano. Ran to the summit of Sleeping Giant. Elevation gain was something like 1000m. Trail was fairly substantial but, being less than ten miles from the rainiest place on earth it was also slicker than snot. Walked a few of the dicier downhill sections. Running through the jungle was a great experience, but I'm now sure I'll never do the HURT 100. Wondering if each step will stick would get old long before 24 hours was up.

Hiking around the summit of Mauna Kea with Yaya. Give it a 2 because of the altitude (nearly 4000m) and I did do a short jog back up to the summit when I realized I had forgotten to take a picture. Yaya seemed completely unaffected by the altitude so mountain camping is surely in our future. After coming off the summit, we hung around the visitor center (3000m) for until the sun went down and then took part in their free stargazing. Definitely a must trip for anybody going to the big island.
