shoes: Speedcross 3

2x12:00T 3:00R on the way home from work via Hog's Hollow and Whispering Pines. Didn't feel like I was up for it, but I knew I had to do it today or lose the session altogether. Watch and HR confirmed it was legit tempo, so I guess I was just feeling lazy.

Tuesday Apr 29, 2014 #

6 AM

Running (Mix) 1:03:00 [2] *
shoes: Speedstar 6

In to work via powerline/Greentrails, running the road where available.

Monday Apr 28, 2014 #

4 PM

Terrain (Grass) 1:02:00 [2] *
shoes: MT110

Home from work via Pebble Acres. Looks like the powerline near work won't be an option for a while; UE is replacing some of the high-tension towers and has the whole thing dug up.

Sunday Apr 27, 2014 #

7 AM

Terrain (Grass) 35:00 [2] **

2 School Barefoot Loop.
3 PM

Terrain (Mix) 1:28:00 [2] **
shoes: Speedstar 6

Kate's sister and fam were visiting and we went to Longview Garms after church so they could tire out there kids in hopes they'd sleep on the trip back to Champaign. After sending the off, I ran back home by way of Queeny.

Saturday Apr 26, 2014 #

8 AM

Running (Road) 20:00 [2]
shoes: Speedstar 6

Warmup/down.

Running (Road) 21:37 [3] 3.0 mi (7:12 / mi)
shoes: Speedstar 6

Ross Elementary Fun Run. I won't dignify it by calling it a race because I was running a pace appropriate for ten times the distance and I still won by a couple minutes. No fast dads this year.

Friday Apr 25, 2014 #

11 AM

Terrain (Trail) 40:00 [2] **
(rest day) shoes: MT110

Lunchtime jog around the Maryville trails. Slow, but not labored. Right calf is still not right, but I think I can try a normal run tomorrow.

Thursday Apr 24, 2014 #

7 AM

Terrain (Grass) 26:00 [2] **
weight:179lbs (rest day)

Stopped at CC Lake en route from the PT's to work to get in a quick barefoot run. Another couple days needed before returning to normal training. Probably no quality until late next week.

Wednesday Apr 23, 2014 #

7 AM

Cycling (Road) 33:00 [2]
(rest day) shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

In to work on the SUV so I could use the granny gears if needed. I managed to stay out of the little ring, but only by using the biggest cog on the back.
4 PM

Cycling (Mix) 1:17:00 [2] **
(rest day) shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

Home from work via CC Lake. Includes about 20 minutes on grass and easy trail. Still using tiny gears as the legs have no power. No pain, either, so I'll try a run tomorrow.

Tuesday Apr 22, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

Completely off. Mighty sore.

Monday Apr 21, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

No real effort to speak of, but did have my first session with the Physical Therapist on the shoulder. Learned lots of new exercises.

Sunday Apr 20, 2014 #

6 AM

Running (Road) 40:00 [1]
(rest day)

Walked to church (Kate and Yaya were only doing 10:30 service, but I had to sing at both). This is going to be a full recovery cycle for sure.

Event: Double Chubb

4 AM

Running (Road) 30:00 [2]
shoes: Speedstar 6

7:30AM start meant the pre-run was very pre-dawn.
7 AM

Terrain (Trail) 20:00 [2] ***
shoes: MT110

Warmup.

Terrain race (Trail) 4:21:42 [5] *** 50.0 km (5:14 / km)
shoes: MT110

Double Chubb 50K. Decided to run it like a marathon in terms of pacing and fueling. Guess I got that a bit too right because at 3 hours I was pretty much shot. Managed to only give away one spot to finish 4th overall, 2nd M50, but the last hour was ugly indeed. Full report.

Friday Apr 18, 2014 #

11 AM

Terrain (Grass) 41:00 [2] *
(rest day) shoes: MT110

Work to Schnucks and back for lunch. Despite a very springy day, legs weren't very springy at all. Hope that changes in the next 18 hours. Meanwhile, the rain has missed us, so the Chubb should be quite fast tomorrow. Maybe just a tad warm by the finish, but it's definitely shaping up to be a no-excuses run.

Thursday Apr 17, 2014 #

Cycling (Road) 30:00 [2]

Tempo intervals on the Chubb from Lone Elk. Tracks to table@9:15, back down easy (roughly equal time), then 4x5:00Ti 1:00R along the bottoms.

Trail along the river is damp everywhere and somewhat goopy in spots, but on the whole I'd call the bottoms section neutral. River is about 2m below the lowest point on the trail, so we'll almost surely be using the full route this year. As the 50+ course record was set last year on the quad-bypass course and said record setter (Joel Lammers, who finished just behind me last year) is returning this year, it's almost as sure a thing that whichever of us finishes first will set a new 50+ record in the process. If we get no (or very little) rain on Friday, the bottoms will go from neutral to fast and that record may well be sub-4, which could keep it on the books for some time. So, the motivation is certainly there. Not so sure about the fitness, but if I'm off, it's not by much. At any rate, Saturday will be all in.

Monday Apr 14, 2014 #

4 PM

Terrain (Grass) 1:00:00 [2] **

Home from work on the powerline, which was soft, to say the least.

Sunday Apr 13, 2014 #

7 AM

Running (Mix) 46:00 [2]
(rest day) shoes: Speedstar 6

Easy jog round Dayton. Split between grass and pavement. Legs were crazy stiff and sore when we stopped last night, but didn't feel too bad this morning. Less then six hours drive remaining so should be OK. Hoping to get in one more quality session before Chubb.

Saturday Apr 12, 2014 #

Terrain (Trail) 1:29:00 [3] ***

Lookout loop including the climb @23:36. Foal finally arrived at 10PM last night. Good looking colt. Although I got to bed by 11:30 (Yaya was up until well past midnight helping Annie and Al)), I was still a bit tired mentally going into this one. Didn't really hit tempo pace until halfway up the climb. I ran the second half well enough to post a respectable split, but still decided to tack on another 12 minutes of tempo after I got back down to the dirt road (about 20 minutes recovery).

Running (Road) 33:00 [2]

The mare went into labor at 3AM, but then talked herself out of it. Easy jog round the farm in between naps.

Thursday Apr 10, 2014 #

8 AM

Running (Road) 36:00 [2]

Easy jog round Annie's farm. Still no foal. Yaya is getting worried we'll miss it.
4 PM

Terrain (Trail) 1:13:00 [2] ****
shoes: Speedcross 3

Pinnacles loop from Annie's. Still no foal. I'm going to be super pissed if we miss it. That said, it's been a great visit regardless.

Terrain (Trail) 2:26:00 [2] ****

Abbott Loop of Finger Lakes Trail plus out and back from Annie's farm. Typical spring conditions, meaning there was plenty of water, both solid and liquid. That, added to the already rugged terrain and excessive climb made this a pretty tough go. I took it easy as I wasn't looking to jack myself up. Chubb is going to feel like a bike path.

Tuesday Apr 8, 2014 #

9 AM

Running (Road) 1:06:00 [2]

Easy jog around my sister's farm. No foal last night; today is the due date.

7 AM

Running (Road) 29:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hotel in Erie.

Sunday Apr 6, 2014 #

5 AM

Running (Road) 33:00 [2]

I forgot to get my start time moved, so it was a pretty early pre-run. Woke up before the alarm, so I guess it was fine.
8 AM

Terrain (Grass) 18:00 [2] *
shoes: Oroc 280 (old)

Warmup.

Orienteering race (Woods) 48:20 [4] ***
shoes: Oroc 280 (old)

Green Middle at Mounds (1:10). Decent run except for the losing my SI stick part. Time doesn't count five minutes (exactly) looking for the stick. Amazingly enough, somebody else found it in the thick stuff and turned it in at the finish. Oh, well, this weekend just wasn't to be. Kostansek ran a 46, so I wouldn't have won even if my time had counted.
11 AM

Orienteering (Woods) 25:00 [1] *

Shadowing Yaya on the White course. Another good outing for her.

Green Long at Garr Hill (1:10). Started well, then lost 15 minutes (!!!) on a map reading boom. Jogged in the second half. Bummer, I did want this one.
12 PM

Orienteering (Woods) 49:00 [1] *
12c shoes: Oroc 280 (old)

Shadowing Yaya on White. She did fine and ran a good portion of it.

Friday Apr 4, 2014 #

1 PM

Terrain (Grass) 22:00 [2] *
shoes: Oroc 280 (old)

Somewhat disjointed warmup as the registration packets arrived late. Wasn't worried about it since I was treating today as a training run.

Orienteering race (Woods) 49:00 [3] *** 4.4 km (11:08 / km)
shoes: Oroc 280 (old)

Middle Green at Bear Creek (1:7.5). Footing was atrocious (wet matted leaves on top of mud). I ran conservatively and the result was about what one would expect: a safe 3rd place In M50.

Orienteering (Woods) 38:47 [1] *
12c shoes: Oroc 280 (old)

Shadowing Yaya on White.

Lewis@64:49 plus the Shot Gun loop to and from RGA West. Effort was steady state. Would have preferred a minute or two less on the watch, but this is just ultra+16, so I suppose I should expect to still be a bit off.

Figured a hot lap of Lewis would be a better test of the shoes. They passed; a viable option for Double Chubb. Also weighed them this morning. Was surprised that they are only .5 oz (per shoe) heavier than the ORoc 280's (and 2.5 oz lighter than the Sabinos). They feel closer to the Sabinos in my hand.
