Running (Road) 29:00 [2]
weight:174lbs

So I'm on my way to Babler after work and make the mistake of calling home to see how Mama and Baby-O are doing. "I've been better," says mama. Well, it's obviously a trap, but I'm screwed either way, so I step right into it and ask what's wrong. Turns out Baby-O is blocked and mama can't get to the store to buy any prune juice because she's also blocked - the tree guys are trimming our tree and have her stuck in the garage. Well, so much for Babler. I swing by the store and get some juice and come home. By now, there's not much point in heading out; Baby-O is hungry because she hasn't been able to take a nap (oh, I forgot to mention, she managed to poop while I was getting the juice, but apparently there was a lot of crying involved). The upside is that mama is trying out a new recipe. It's a dish called "The Stack" that we've had at a restaurant that a friend of ours manages. It's actually a pretty healthy vegetarian dish. Naturally, we add wine and it turns out just dandy. The downside is that my chance to hit 172 by May 1 isn't looking so good, despite the fact that prior to dinner I had eaten a whopping 550 calories. I know if I hang around I'm not going to want to get out at all, so I head out the door while there's still daylight even though I'm still a bit woozy from the heat and the wine.

By the time I get to Creve Coeur Lake, the buzz is gone and I'm actually able to push pretty well through a control picking course. Woods are nasty around the edges, but quite fast inside. Didn't get too torn up despite wearing just shorts and a singlet.

Terrain (Trail) 34:00 [2]

Back home via the power line. Will it be enough for 172 tomorrow?

This spring has been a lot of fun, but the task list at home is getting pretty long. So, a beautiful day spent on domestic chores. Actually kinda fun to just putter around the house and not think about competition for a while. Got in a short run after Baby-O went to bed.

Emmenegger Test Loop. No chance of a PR with the woods filling in. I think I was a bit off as well. Maybe the 6:30AM start, maybe something else, but things just didn't feel right.

Schedule called for an easy day, so I worked on map contact at Rockwoods Range (1:15). Managed to stay reasonably focused despite the slow pace. Really nice day to be out.

Running (Road) 57:00 [2]
weight:175lbs

My enthusiasm for getting out and running today was about as low as I can remember it. However, I noted that I wasn't too enthused about sitting at my desk either, so I figured running wasn't the problem. Managed to get myself over to the gym and ran to Forest Park.

Terrain (Mix) 1:07:00 [2]

By the time I got to the park I was feeling a lot better about running. Ran a loop around the park. Mostly on grass, but also some gravel paths and woods trails.

Putting out/picking up controls for the sprint at Lafayette (1:3). Turnout was light, which I expected given the light rain and cool temps (plus the fact that I really haven't been promoting these things). Those who came seemed to enjoy it plenty.

Testing another contender. Ran both at tempo pace. Distance seems about right. I think I like the first one better, even though it will involve the extra work of a map exchange. This park is tiny, but fun.

Easy jogging around the park before and between.

Chicago Goat

Running (Track) 15:00 [4]

Spent more time than planned with Baby-O yesterday. That's not a bad thing, but I didn't get the maps done for the SLOC meet until after midnight. I decided I'd drop the maps at David's and then head off for Chicago, stopping to sleep as needed. Despite frequently honoring that plan, I kept getting drowsey. At about 6AM I decided to go the opposite route and run some intervals to try to perk up. 3x400@90 200R. It worked well enough. I drove the remaining 2 hours to Chicago without difficulty.

Terrain (Grass) 20:00 [2]

Totally lame warmup. I felt like crap. I didn't let it bother me because I often race well when I don't feel good at the start.

Which is exactly what happened. Won the Curse of the Goat (CAOC) at Palos Hills North (1:15). Fairly large group through the first half dozen controls, then things started to break up. By #13, it was just me and Audun Botterud with Jeff Shaw a few minutes back in third. Two skips were allowed and I decided to stay with him in skipping 14 and 17. Opened a pretty good gap on the long leg to 19 but gave it back by overrunning the control. He got to within a few seconds of me at 20, but I had a bit more in the tank for the last 500m.

Excellent course designed by Maricel Olaru. Woods were thorny in spots. Now my arms match my legs from last weekend. Really hot for this time of year. I was glad I was wearing my Camelbak.

Puttered around north county in the 60" gear. Don't usually ride in this area; St. Charles is nicer if I want to avoid hills. Still, this early in the day things weren't too congested and it was nice to be on some different roads.

Not sure how to categorize this. It was basically hanging and mapping together. At each control location I'd make sure the map updates were adequate. In a few places there was some work required. Also mapped some new building just off the courses.

Test ran the final version of the first sprint course at S-F (1:5), including punching at each control (to get a master punch card). Close to race pace. Probably didn't need to pay too much attention to the map, but I did anyway because I wanted to make sure it was OK throughout the leg.

Terrain (Mix) 1:44:00 [2]
weight:177lbs

Lunchtime terrain run - yes, terrain running in the middle of the city! Headed north (ooooo, scary) into the hood. Despite Nelly's informed commentary on this area, the pimps and drug dealers are generally still rubbing the sleep from their eyes at noon, so it's pretty safe. Most of the folks that live here are decent enough, they're just really, really, poor.

Anyway, there are enough parks, boulevards, and vacant lots that you can pretty much stay off pavement. Made my way up to the railroad bridge north of the McKinley and then ran downtown along the river. Did a lap around the arch grounds and then back to midtown via Keiner Plaza. Fun times.

Cycling (Road) 1:52:00 [2]
weight:178lbs

Easy spin in the 60" gear. Really nice day and as I puttered along I started thinking that maybe it was a shame I wasn't doing the Tour of St. Louis this weekend. Put it in the big ring to remind myself of what really riding a bike feels like and it only took a few minutes for me to decide that going to Chicago for the goat holds considerably better prospects. Heart and lungs are there, but the cycling muscles are pretty off right now.

Finished up the sprint map for Lafayette Park. Took longer than expected, but I think I was just going slow because it was so nice out.

Cycling (Road) 1:38:00 [2]

Nice enough, in fact, that when I got home I decided I had to get out and ride. Did the Tour of Flanders loop in honor of the fact that the Americans did absolutely nothing in that race this year. Spun easy in the 60" gear, except for the climbs and cobbles because one has to hammer that stuff when dreaming about Flanders.

Another day of meetings, so another early run. This time I ran for home so I could have breakfast with mama and Baby-O before they left for Chicago.

Cycling (Road) 2:01:00 [2]

Easy laps around CC Lake in the 60" gear. Not a particularly inspired route, but I didn't want to get caught in the rain an hour from home. (Not that I really mind riding in the rain - I just didn't want to have to spend a bunch of time cleaning up my bike this evening.)

Running (Road) 1:14:00 [2]
weight:180lbs

With my work day all chopped up with meetings, there was no time to get in a mid-day run. So, I decided to run early. The simple thing would have been to run from home and then go into work. The problem with that plan is that it would have me going downtown during rush hour in the rain. That's a nice way to kill an hour. So, I drive in to work at the normal time (5:45 - takes about 15 minutes) and run from there. I go in wearing my workout clothes.

Putting my work clothes into my locker, I notice that I've only got one sock. Not wanting to match rain-soaked, white athletic socks with black wing tips, the purpose of the run is now to procure some socks. That would be fairly easy to do at lunch, but at 6AM there aren't too many vendors of socks eager to do business. I've just about reached the time when I need to head back if I'm going to make my first meeting when I spot a supermarket that's open. A very friendly manager apologizes that they don't have much in the way of men's socks, but I might be able to find a women's pair that will work. The closest I come is a pretty basic black that fits sizes 6-10. Fortunately, women seem to like hosiery made from fairly stretchy material, so I figure I'll be able to pull them over my size 13 clompers OK.

Prospects brighten from there. The rain stops and I pick up the pace enough that I still have time to take a shower and cool down before rushing off to my meeting. The socks are tight, but actually not a bad fit. I think a women's 6 corresponds to a men's 4 or 5. Hard to believe these socks wouldn't just fall off a foot that size.

Technically, Easter is a 7-week feast, but I guess I'll have to limit it to one day if I'm ever going to get this G value under control. I suppose I shouldn't be so hard on myself. At this time last year, I would have regarded 181 as a prime summer fightin' weight. However, having tasted the lotus of running another 10 pounds lighter, I can't satisfy myself with lumbering along at my current mass.

Not that that has anything to do with the fact that I need to get the S-F map updated for the meet in two weeks. So, that's what I did. Just adding all the new stuff they've built around the Swift center (other side of the lake from where Team Trials was held). Anyway, we've now got something I can set a couple sprint courses on.

Orienteering (Woods) 46:00 [4] ***

Then I test ran my courses on the old map (blown up to 1:5) while trying to remember the updates. Ran each course in around 14 minutes, so the distance is good provided David Frei shows up and runs well. Anna could probably run them in around 15 minutes too, if she's healthy. Also re-ran a few legs to make sure the map correctly represented route choices. Of course, at S-F you pretty much run straight at everything, but I managed to set a couple legs where an off-line route is best.

Control picking intervals at Babler. Roughly 7x6 minutes with equal recovery.

Caught my foot on a dead branch and drove it into the back of my left calf with considerable force. Hurt like hell at the time, but quickly diminished to a level I could ignore (which I did). During the drive back home it really stiffened up. I'm walking with a considerable limp now. The area doesn't look too bad, so I'm hoping that ice and vitamin I fix things up in short order.

Running (Mix) 2:16:00 [2] 16.0 mi (8:30 / mi)

Got to Indy a bit after midnight when Kate decided we absolutely had to stop. That meant back on the road really early and Kate dropping me off directly at work so I wasn't too ridiculously late for my 9AM meeting. That left me 1) lacking transportation home 2) needing some easy activity to loosen up after so much driving, and 3) very fat after a week of eating out. Running home seemed like a good solution to all three, but mostly I just wanted to see if I could goad another log comment out of Tom Carr for doing a long run on a recovery day.

Includes about 20 minutes of running on the powerline. Misjudged the sunset (again) so it was really dark going through the culvert under 270.

Day 2 Blue at Fair Hill/Mason-Dixon (1:10). Another good run. Felt like my pacing was OK, but when I picked it up at the end, I was surprised by how much was left in the tank. Probably could have pushed harder early on. Spent a lot more time reading the map today. The course seemed more technical, though I don't know that it was. No significant errors, though my eyesight cost me a minute or so at 8. I could have used a maginfier there as I didn't see the little ditch on the map, even when I stopped to look closely. Finished 10th to take 8th for both days.

Happy to put together a solid weekend. Speed in the terrain is a real concern. I'm losing time even on legs that are run perfectly.

Terrain (Trail) 11:00 [2]

Jogged back to the event center. I also cleaned up and changed in less time than it took mama and Baby-O to get back on the bus. I don't know why they just didn't have everybody walk.
