Running (Mix) 50:00 [3]

Over to the Des Peres River and then along the grass and railroad tracks following the river for a while.

Tuesday Apr 27, 2004 #

Running (Road) 47:00 [3]

With Baby-O in the jogger.

Monday Apr 26, 2004 #

Note

No PR's for yardwork this week. My pennance for the weekend trip was spending 45 minutes walking 1/2 mph behind the mower while it tried to cut through 8" high grass.

Running (Mix) 27:00 [2]

Warmup.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:17:58 [4] 7.5 km (10:24 / km) +180m 9:17 / km
spiked:13/16c

Badger Day 2 Red on Devils Lake (BGR 1:10). Navigated well (except for one bad route choice on a long leg that costed me about 3 minutes and a couple small errors) but really had trouble moving fast on the wet rocks. Finished second again, but this time Mark spanked me by 13 minutes. ST=617.

Note

Good courses, good map, good terrain. All added up to a great weekend. Proof that you can put on a fine A-meet with a tiny staff as long as you focus on what's important. Congrats Kevin.

Here's a no-name athlete product endorsement: Wal-itin D (Walgreen's generic for Claritin). I can tell that I'm still sick, but it really didn't mess me up at all over the weekend. Amazing stuff.

Running (Mix) 33:00 [2]

Warmup.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:16:44 [4] 7.7 km (9:58 / km) +305m 8:19 / km
spiked:13/8c

The Badger Day 1 Red at Devils Lake (BGR 1:10). Very rocky terrain. Good run considering how unfamiliar I am with this type of terrain. Took safe routes to avoid big booms. Had several small mistakes for about 5 minutes total error. Second on Red to Mark Voit by 2 seconds. ST=601.

Friday Apr 23, 2004 #

Running (Road) 28:00 [2]

Easy jog round West Baraboo to loosen up after the 6-hour car ride.

Thursday Apr 22, 2004 #

Note

Head cold coming on. Doctor thinks it's viral so I'll just have to fight it off myself.

Wednesday Apr 21, 2004 #

Cycling (Road) 52:00 [4]

Over to Forest Park for 2 laps of the He Man Big Ring Loop (modestly manly splits of 6:46 and 6:38 with 4 minutes recovery).

It turns out that the loop is absurdly dangerous in the evenings during softball season. I just about got run over 3 or 4 times. I guess I'll have to move this workout to the mornings.

Tuesday Apr 20, 2004 #

Running (Road) 21:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood. Legs are still dead from last weekend.

Sunday Apr 18, 2004 #

Running (Road) 15:00 [2]

Warmup. Not as good as I would have liked - I started jogging to the start and was almost there when I realized I had forgot to tape my shoelaces. By the time I got back to the car and taped them I didn't have time to run back so Nadim drove me up there.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:05:51 [5] 7.4 km (8:54 / km) +290m 7:26 / km
spiked:12/14c

Pig Day 3 at Templeton Creek (OCIN 1:10). Fairly easy navigation with lots of viable trail routes. Woods weren't as thick as the previous 2 days. Also, the earlier start meant the heat wasn't so bad. All added up to a day for running fast. Was pretty clean until #13 when I dropped 3 minutes on a boom. Still managed best M40 time to pass Dan on combined time. Tom Carr got by both of us to take best time on Red by about a minute.

All in all a fun meet, Friday's "Juniper Groves" notwithstanding. ST=588.

Saturday Apr 17, 2004 #

Running (Grass) 20:00 [2]

Warmup.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:11:47 [4] 8.0 km (8:58 / km) +300m 7:33 / km
spiked:9/13c

Pig Day 2 Red at Garr Hill North (OCIN 1:10). OK run marred by one really stupid boom. About 5 minutes total error. 2nd M40 to Dan Menehan. It was pretty hot and I slowed down in the last couple K. ST=574.

Friday Apr 16, 2004 #

Running (Mix) 45:00 [2]

Longish warmup after a rather bad night sleeping in the van.

Orienteering (Woods) 49:14 [4] 4.5 km (10:56 / km) +145m 9:25 / km
spiked:7/13c

Pig Sprint at Woodland Trails (MVOC 1:10). Terrible map. Absurd that this would be allowed in an A-meet. I think this meet would have been thrown out on protest a few years back. Sadly, the tolerance for this kind of crap is growing. Somebody needs to stop the madness and take a stand that OCAD + GPS <> mapping. ST = 561.

Thursday Apr 15, 2004 #

Other 15:43 [2]

New PR for cutting the lawn!

Tuesday Apr 13, 2004 #

Running (Grass) 15:00 [2]

Warmup/down.

Orienteering (Woods) 41:18 [4] 5.1 km (8:06 / km) +225m 6:38 / km
spiked:10/12c

Short course at Babler (printed at 1:10 to practice for the Pig). 8 minute K's at Babler! I'll be happy if I can run that pace at the Pig. ST=548.

Monday Apr 12, 2004 #

Running (Road) 20:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood.

Saturday Apr 10, 2004 #

Orienteering (Woods) 3:35:00 [2]

Group session with Yvonne Deyo & Dave Frei at 24-hour pace. Started at Greensfelder and went north into Rockwoods Reservation then south to Rockwoods Range using USGS quad (1:24). Carried 20-pound pack. ST=536.

Friday Apr 9, 2004 #

Cycling (Road) 4:27:00 [3]

About an hour of easy pedalling, then into the hills along the Meremac. First the St. Paul - Ridge loop (2 steep climbs, but not very long). Then down Old State and up to Hidden Valley Ski (longer than I remembered - didn't pace myself too well). Through Eureka to the Hornecker loop (2 more short steep ones) and the big finish with the Greensfelder - Woods pair. About an hour of decent tempo work coming back in on Clayton.

Thursday Apr 8, 2004 #

Running (Road) 25:00 [2]

Over to the park and back.

Orienteering (Park) 42:00 [4]

O-intervals at Forest Park (1:10). 5x600m@2:15-3:00, 2:00 recovery. Then a short break while I jogged around checking out some of the park renovations. Finished with a 2K course at race pace. ST=514.

Note

So I'm jogging back from the park and about to cross 40 on the Highland bridge when Mark Geldemeyer spots me. He's just heading out for a run in the park. He asks if I saw the news a couple nights ago.

No, what happened? Apparently his neighbor got pretty pissed that all the bridges over 40 (and 40 itself - only the busiest artery out of the city) were shut down at rush hour Monday because George W had to drive from the ballgame to the airport. This moron (his neighbor, not W) argues with the police for a while, then goes into his house and brings out a shotgun.

OK, full marks for balls, but what was he thinking? By the time the situation was diffused there were 30 cop cars on the highland bridge (this is a one-lane residential bridge, mind you). Truly bizarre stuff.

Wednesday Apr 7, 2004 #

Running (Mix) 1:27:00 [2]

Over to Forest Park and a lap around the new jogging path (closely follows the old bike path, but it's generally dirt/gravel rather than paved).

Tuesday Apr 6, 2004 #

Tae Kwon Do (Technique) 1:45:00 [2]

A bit of everything. Took it easy as I don't want to hurt myself with the Pig coming up in 10 days. Includes warmup on my own.

Sunday Apr 4, 2004 #

Cycling (Road) 2:47:00 [3]

A couple hours with the Sharks and then some on my own.

Saturday Apr 3, 2004 #

Cycling (Road) 45:00 [1]

Soft pedaled around Forest Park watching the last few miles of the women's Olympic Marathon Trials. Some of them looked pretty displeased when they hit the Science Center hill at 24 miles.

Friday Apr 2, 2004 #

Running (Trail) 3:59:00 [2]

2 laps of Lewis trail and 1 lap of Clark trail plus a little extra to bring the time up to 4 hours. With 10 pound pack. Ran at my target pace for the Berryman 50 miler (hoping to break 9 hours). Pace felt OK, seemed like I could have gone a lot further. Weird to think that this wasn't even half way though.

Thursday Apr 1, 2004 #

Running (Trail) 1:51:00 [3]

2xTyson section of Chubb trail with 10 pound pack. Nice negative splits: 29:10 out, 28:21 back, 26:58 out, 26:57 back.
