Moderate tempo on rolling terrain.

Tuesday Nov 25, 2003 #

Gym (Cardio) 20:00 [4]

Fairly rigorous set of intervals on the elliptical trainer.

Gym (Weights) 20:00 [4]

2 sets upper body only.

Cycling (Road) 2:05:00 [4]

Moderate tempo punctuated every 10-15 minutes by a full on bridge-the-gap-now-or-your-race-is-over type effort of 60-75 seconds.

Timed it pretty good as the first raindrops started falling while I was putting my bike in the basement and a couple minutes later there was a pretty serious storm going on. Some have been bold enough to predict snow this evening (although it's still 70 out right now).

Orienteering (Woods) 3:22:00 [2]

Hanging controls for the 3-hour at Cuivre River (1:15). Wore the aircast (which quadruples in weight when you cross a stream) and my foot didn't get sore at all. My map reading was really rusty, but I was hanging the low pointers so it was easy to find the locations. Yvonne Deyo hung the high pointers which were already taped.

Woods are really fast for the meet next weekend - I think somebody will sweep even though it will take over 20K to do it.

Cycling (Road) 49:00 [4]

Two loops of the Big Ring loop in Forest Park. After 2 days of business travel, I didn't have much pop in the legs for the climbs, so I used the 53x19 instead of the 17. Did well enough on the flats to post splits of 7:49 and 7:50 spaced by the usual 3 minutes or so of recovery.

Cycling 4:20:00 [3]

Rode over to Dave Frei's, then we did some big gear work on the Missouri flood plain and a bunch of hills. Nothing too crazy, just good solid tempo. Dave kinda ran out of gas on the way back, but he did race yesterday.

Note

Dave was using his fancy new Shimano 16-spoke wheels for the first time. We went over some fairly rough stuff yet they were perfectly true at the end of the ride. He's lighter than me, but I was still impressed. I think I'll stick with my 24-spoke Campy's though.

Cycling (Road) 1:48:00 [4]

Mostly moderate tempo, but I give it a 4 because of some big gear work along the Meremac and a trip up Marshall Rd in 3:47. Also a good pace up Adams into Kirkwood (around 5 minutes, but I didn't time it).

Thursday Nov 13, 2003 #

Gym (Cardio) 35:00 [4]

15 minutes of intervals on the elliptical trainer, then 20 minutes on stairs after lifting.

Gym (Weights) 25:00 [4]

2 sets upper & lower body.

Cycling (Road) 1:48:00 [3]

Moderate tempo, mostly big ring with a few stern efforts thrown in.

Note

Today was the first time in I don't know how long that I started a ride in the rain. I usually run when it's wet, but that's out until my foot heals. Leigh Pheonix, an aerospace prof I knew at Cornell (and US 24-hour TT record holder at the time) told me that there's less resistance in the rain. I don't know if that's BS or not, but it does feel faster.

Cycling (Road) 2:58:00 [3]

With temps returning to more seasonal mid-40's, a longer route was in order. Plenty of climbs, some taken with a degree of ugency, but mostly moderate pace.

Cycling (Road) 1:41:00 [4]

It was really cold today. I drove out to Greensfelder so I could get in some good hills without having to make it a 3 hour ride. I felt like going longer, but my toes were freezing. Still got in about 1000m of climbing.

Sunday Nov 2, 2003 #

Cycling (Road) 1:54:00 [3]

Rode over to Dave Frei's and then we wandered around west county at a moderate clip until we realized that we were way out in Ellisville only 45 minutes before sunset.

Cycling (Road) 47:00 [5]

So we hammered back in on Clayton Road. 53x12,13,14 the whole way except for the hills in Ladue.
