Cycling (Road) 1:15:00 [2]

Warmup/down. Warmdown was really short because it was getting dark.

Cycling (Road) 36:00 [3]

Tuesday night training race #1. The infield was blocked off for the truck race this weekend so we raced on the oval. I'm sure that's really exciting in a 600 horsepower truck. Kinda dull on a bike. I just sat in the field so I could practice my field sprint. Nobody got away. I was in good position for the sprint (15th @500m) but had trouble moving up because it was a tailwind sprint. Finished 12th.

Cycling (Road) 22:00 [4]

Tuesday night training race #2. Broke away with 5 laps to go and was quickly joined by two others. We were caught after a couple laps. Decided to go super early in the field sprint to take advantage of the tailwind. This rather obvious tactic actually caught the field by surprise and I held on for the win.

Running (Trail) 30:00 [2]

Warmup/down.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:00:54 [5] 7.5 km (8:07 / km)

Bramble Ramble Red on Palos Hills North (CAOC 1:15, 7.5K, 2.7%, 17 controls). Woo Hoo! Finally, a course you could just blast on! Running red lines most of the day. Less than 1 minute error. 2nd in M35 (to Spike) and overall on Red. Passed Dave for 2nd in M35 on combined time. Death match now 9-6 in favor of Dave. ST=656/850.

Running (Trail) 25:00 [2]

Warmup/down.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:12:34 [5] 7.7 km (9:25 / km)

Bramble Ramble Red on Palos Hills North (CAOC 1:15, 7.7K, 2.5%, 15 controls). A bit rough at first, then ran well. Perhaps 3 minutes of errors and another 2 of tentative running. A lot of trail running to get around the green areas. 3rd in M35 (to Spike and Dave Frei), 4th overall on Red. ST=639/833.

Orienteering (Woods) 58:00 [3]

Model event at Cap Sauer (CAOC, 1:15). Not as thick as I remember; I actually enjoyed it (I had vowed to never return to Cap Sauer after my last meet there). Of course, it's still really thick. Definately will have to navigate around the green stuff tomorrow. ST=624/818.

Running (Road) 21:00 [2]

Real slow. Hopefully will get a decent amount of sleep tonight.

Tuesday Apr 23, 2002 #

Note

Would have liked to have ridden the bike today. Got to work before 7:00AM so I could get out early. Production database went boom at 9:37AM. Left work at 1:00AM after kicking off batch.

Monday Apr 22, 2002 #

Note

Very sore. No surprise there. I need to think only about recovery this week.

Sunday Apr 21, 2002 #

Orienteering (Woods) 1:59:22 [4] 13.2 km (9:03 / km)

SLOC meet - Score-O at S Bar F (1:15, fabulous terrain, not much climb). Pace was a bit slow for S-F. Fortunately, just about all the other good folks also ran R2R yesterday. Navigation was really clean. I won ahead of Dan Meenehan (don't know why he was slow) Gary, DAVE, and Orlyn. ST=611/805.

Note

For those not keeping score at home, Dave now leads the Death Match 8-4, but at least I'm getting a few wins. It was looking pretty bleak for a while.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:11:00 [1]

Picking up controls. I was totally wasted, but we showed up too late to take an early start and help with the finish like we promised, so it seemed like the sporting thing to do.

Running (Road) 35:00 [2]

Warmup and jogging between legs.

Running (Road) 1:13:40 [5] 11.0 mi (6:42 / mi)

River To River Relay (8 runners, 24 legs, 80 miles). Leg 8 (3.65mi, real hilly) in 24:51. Leg 16 (4.05 mi, not too hilly, but getting pretty hot) in 27:33. Leg 24 (3.30 mi, hilly but the rain had started so it was cooling off) in 21:16. Overall we (we being the Orienteers: Nicholas Frei, Jim Stroup, Yvonne Deyo, Ken DeBeer, Dave Frei, Gary Thompson, Orlyn Skrien, me) were 37th of 240 teams, 14th on handicap (thanks for the minutes Orlyn!).

Thursday Apr 18, 2002 #

Gym 35:00 [3]

Jog over to gym for 1 set of upper body work.

Wednesday Apr 17, 2002 #

Orienteering (Woods) 59:00 [4]

O-Intervals on the flood plain section of Castlewood (1:15). 3 1.2K control picking courses at race speed (6-8 min/K depending on vegetation which is starting to get pretty thick in spots). 8-10 minutes recovery between each. ST=578/772.

Mapping 1:20:00 [1]

Fieldchecking Castlewood. Lost the blue mechanical pencil that I just bought last week. Pisser.

Cycling (Trail) 35:00 [2]

Warmup/down.

Cycling (Trail) 39:00 [4]

Castlewood training series. A minute slower than last week even though the conditions were fast. Either the O-intervals took the edge off or I'm still tired from the Pig. Probably both. Dave Frei showed up this week and got third in Sport. I was 8th.

Tuesday Apr 16, 2002 #

Running (Road) 24:00 [2]

Still recovering from the Pig.

Sunday Apr 14, 2002 #

Running (Trail) 35:00 [2]

Warmup (blew off the warmdown).

Orienteering (Woods) 1:56:53 [5] 9.8 km (11:56 / km)

Pig Farsta Blue (9.8K, 5.6%, 27 controls) on Fort Ancient (OCIN, 1:10). Legs gave out today. I tried to push through it but never really had anything. Navigation was good except for one panic attack (I was going fine, but suddenly was sure I had overrun the control) that cost me about 5 minutes. All in all, an excellent weekend for me. Another great meet by OCIN. ST=563/757.

Saturday Apr 13, 2002 #

Running (Trail) 40:00 [2]

Warmup/down.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:37:06 [5] 8.7 km (11:10 / km)

Pig Classic Blue (8.7K, 5.1%, 16 controls) at Fort Ancient (OCIN, 1:10). Another decent run on another physical course. One significant error and a few small bobbles. Second half was much better than first. ST=526/730.

Friday Apr 12, 2002 #

Running (Trail) 30:00 [2]

Warmup/down.

Orienteering (Woods) 59:59 [5] 5.8 km (10:21 / km)

Pig Sprint Blue (5.3K, 6.4%, 18 controls) on Camp Whip Poor Will (OCIN 1:10). Good run on a very physical course. One small error and one poor route choice, but probably within a few minutes of the best I could do. ST=520/714.

Thursday Apr 11, 2002 #

Orienteering (Woods) 45:00 [3]

Jogged over to Forrest Park (1:10) and picked a few controls in the wooded section. Final tuneup for the Pig. ST=502/696

Wednesday Apr 10, 2002 #

Cycling (Trail) 40:00 [3]

Warmup/down. Included one of the climbs from the course.

Cycling (Trail) 38:00 [4]

Castlewood training series. 2 laps, 2 climbs per lap. Fast going up, slow going down (as usual). Fortunately, Castlewood puts a premium on the former, so I got 5th in Sport. Took the climbs just hard enough to hold my position on lap 2. Probably harder than I should have gone with the Pig coming up, but I think I'll be OK.

Tuesday Apr 9, 2002 #

Cycling (Road) 55:00 [2]

Warm up/down.

Cycling (Road) 35:00 [4]

Tuesday Night Crit Series. Mostly sat in the pack which was moving pretty quick tonight. Took off with 1 and a half laps to go. Two guys came with me and it looked promising for a bit but the field wasn't letting anyone escape. We got shut down right as we took the bell for the last lap. Got back up to the front to try it again, but the sprint was already winding up.

Monday Apr 8, 2002 #

Note

Restin up for the Pig.

Sunday Apr 7, 2002 #

Running (Trail) 25:00 [2]

Warmup/down and some light jogging between sessions.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:30:00 [4]

Two sessions, each about 5.5K at Cuivre River (mapped 1:15, but we blew it up to 1:10 on a copier) with Dave Frei. Dave put the courses together and they were much more his style (long legs with lots of hard running). It was good to have to think about route choice - most of my recent training has focused on fine navigation. Ran fast and clean except for one big boom when I started daydreaming on a long leg. ST=502/689.

Saturday Apr 6, 2002 #

Orienteering (Woods) 30:00 [2]

Relocation drills on West Tyson (1:10) with Dave Frei, Ken DeBeer, & Yvonne Deyo. Each of us had a map with three controls (each map was different). Only the person going to their control could look at the map. When they got to the control, the next person had to lead to their next control.

Orienteering (Woods) 34:00 [4]

Hammered a short course on Tyson. Dave & I planned our routes in advance so we could compare alternate routes. A few real surprises - one that looked obviously faster was a wash, another that looked like it wouldn't matter was very different. ST=484/671.

Running (Trail) 1:00:00 [3]

Tyson section of the Chubb Trail with Dave & Ken (Yvonne said she had to go - maybe she was just sick of us).

Cycling (Trail) 1:37:00 [3]

Full length of the Chubb on the Mt Bike. Could have picked a less technical trail for my first off-road ride in 5 months, especially with those two maniacs. I rode the uphills really well, but they had to wait on the descents.

Friday Apr 5, 2002 #

Running (Road) 30:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood.

Thursday Apr 4, 2002 #

Cycling (Road) 1:04:00 [1]

Legs were dead so I just putted around Forest Park in the 60" gear.

Wednesday Apr 3, 2002 #

Orienteering (Woods) 1:30:00 [4]

O-intervals at Castlewood (1:10). 4x1.5K@11:00-15:00 depending on hills. 6-9 controls per segment. 5 minutes easy jogging between segments plus 15 minute warm up. ST=468/655.

Tuesday Apr 2, 2002 #

Gym 1:34:00 [5]

Squats 12x225, 8x295, 8x315, 6x335 (failed on 7), 15x225. Then 4 sets (1 warmup, 3 heavy) of lower body work. Also threw in a moderate set of upper body work while waiting for the squat rack.

Monday Apr 1, 2002 #

Cycling (Road) 1:24:00 [2]

60" gear. Six 60-revolution sprints, all under 19.5 seconds.

Note

Woo Hoo! Steaks on the grill with green beans, rice, and a 97 Simi Cab. Probably not the best training food, but it sure was good.
