Running (Road) 38:00 [3]

Probably a bit harder than I needed to be running - proper pace for this loop is 40-42 minutes so this was basically junk miles - but it's been a pretty stressful week and I needed to blow off some steam.

Cycling (Road) 1:02:00 [2]
weight:169lbs

In to work. Super frosty - I thought it was high 20's but it actually turned out to be right around 20F. Just before getting to work I noticed my bike making some wierd vibration sounds and figured the headset was loose. Turns out it was my waterbottle - frozen solid. I don't remember the last time that happened.

Cycling (Road) 1:18:00 [2]

Back home. Much nicer conditions.

Running (Road) 23:00 [2]
(injured)

In to work.

Running (Road) 1:07:00 [2]

Back from work taking the Metro to Forsythe and then running to the Bus in Olivette.

Note
(injured)

Drove to work hoping to get in a run at Rockwoods afterwards. Unfortunately, I got a production call at 2:55 and by the time it was resolved, it was time to head home. A rest day won't hurt; might be a good thing.

On the upside, the deserted, wet S-bend on the Market street exit at 6AM was the perfect testbed for the new tires. My assessment: if you get a chance to pick up a set of Nokian WR's with 9/32nds tread for $300, do it. Exit speed was 72, which is as good as the Little Red Rocket ever did in the rain.

Terrain (Mix) 1:29:00 [2]
(injured)

I stepped out the door with enthusiasm usually reserved for dental work. Was surprised (shall I say, shocked?) to find a spring in my step that has been conspicuously absent for the past month. Experience has taught me that the first day of feeling well after an injury is an exceptionally dangerous time and any lifting of the pace falls into the category of really bad idea. Thus, I plodded along as planned, taking the power line to CC Lake and then cutting through Crystal Springs and finally taking the railroad tracks over to pick up the car. Sadly, there are no good opportunities to test handling between the Rock Road and home, so I'll just have to assume that the new tires are worthy of their reputation.

Running (Road) 1:01:00 [2]
(injured)

Dropped the car off at NTB on St. Charles Rock road to get the new tires put on and ran home.

Note

With Mr. Platt in Arizona, I felt somebody had to be picking up the slack on the Yowsa front. Clearing a healthy sheet of ice from the driveway is probably not the best therapy for an injury to the lower back/upper leg, but Kate was having some freinds over, 2 of whom are pregnant and the other 2 were likely to leave a bit tipsy (since the pregnant girls were going to do the driving home), so something had to be done to raise the coefficient of friction to some number above zero. Resorted heavily to chemical warfare, but even with the salt (or whatever that "eco-freindly" ice melt stuff is made out of), there was still a fair bit of conventional chipping and shovelling.

Running (Road) 20:00 [2]
(injured)

In to work. Legs are a bit sore from running on such bad footing yesterday, but the good news is that the hamstrings feel OK. Still a bit of pain, but definitely better than early in the week. I think swapping my chair at work helped a lot (which gives more credence to the idea that the problem is with the sciatic rather than the hams).

Terrain (Mix) 1:16:00 [2]

Looking for something a bit more novel than my usual route on Old Bonhomme, I took the Shrewsbury train to Big Bend and then ran through U City, leaving footprints an a different set of million-dollar lawns. Wound up in Olivette, where I picked up one fully-functional Subaru WRX (new short block, clutch, oil pump, plugs, and rebuilt valve train) in exchange for $6,000. When I got home, Baby-O (who has turned into something of a car nut) was jumping up and down yelling, "Daddy's Blue Car is home!" So, since it needs new tires anyway, I took her out and we did some drift manuevers in an icy parking lot.

Running (Road) 26:00 [2]
weight:168lbs (injured)

In to work cutting across from the 5AM bus to the Shrewsbury line again. Rather a tight transfer; I got to the platform just as the overhead speaker was saying, "The next... eastbound... train... will arrive in... 30... seconds." I'm not sure why they programmed in those wierd pauses.

Terrain (Snow) 1:38:00 [2]

Had the long run back in sleet to ponder the wisdom of cancelling a trip to Arizona. By the end I was thinking I should have just gone and hung out - we're supposed to have this crap coming down for the next few days.

Anyway, forward progress on any paved surface was pretty much impossible with an inch of sleet on top of sheer ice, so I ran through people's yards from Clayton station home. Probably didn't win me any friends in Clayton or Ladue, but nobody yelled at me.

Running (Road) 28:00 [2]
(injured)

The 5AM bus was a couple minutes early so I was able to do the sprint over to the other Metro line and get to work in less than an hour total. First time I've done that using public transportation.

Running (Road) 21:00 [2]

Back from work via Metro and bus.

Tuesday Feb 19, 2008 #

Running (Road) 20:00 [2]

In to work, taking the 5AM bus and the Metro.

Running (Road) 44:00 [2]
(injured)

Link and bus to Great Harvest where I sampled some of their granola and then ran home. Left hamstring is worse than the right although both are tolerable right now. I'm starting to think the problem isn't with the muscles at all. It feels a lot like sciatica. Strange to get it on both sides at once, though.

Monday Feb 18, 2008 #

Note
(injured)

The thing that bugs me is not that I'm injured. It's not that I'm going to have to skip AZ. It's that I don't even know what's wrong. The symptom is obvious enough: both hamstrings are toast. But why? How do you pull both hamstrings and not know it. If it's not a pull, how come it hasn't gone away in two months? I don't know how to fix it if I don't know what the problem is. I need to figure this out pretty quick or I'm going to miss the whole spring season.

Sunday Feb 17, 2008 #

Running (Road) 45:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood.

I've had a nagging problem with the hamstrings (both) just below the upper attachment point. Not sure why it won't go away, but today it's particularly bad. I may just have to take some time off. Bummer. If it's not better by Tuesday, Arizona is off.

Terrain (Trail) 30:00 [2]

Warmup running the perimiter trail.

Orienteering race (Woods) 41:52 [3] *** 4.3 km (9:44 / km) +155m 8:15 / km

SLOC Red course at Cliff Cave (1:7500). A very credible effort by Jeff Sona in his first go as course setter. Run as a Motala. Bill Langton hung with me to the first control but then dropped back going up the steep hill to 2. I was alone after that. I wasn't feeling particularly speedy, and I did have one error that was probably close to 2 minutes, but I certainly didn't expect David to take 4 minutes out of me (he was on the other loop). I guess one needs at least a little sleep to compete well. Hopefully, I'll get some this week. On the up side, it's nice to have David back in form; it will make the local meets a lot more interesting.

Terrain (Trail) 29:00 [2]

Ran the perimeter loop again, this time with Bill. We talked about work, which is a good way to spoil an activity, but it was actually an enjoyable conversation.

Friday Feb 15, 2008 #

Running (Road) 22:00 [2]

In to work. Took the early (4:58) bus, so no need to sprint over to the other Metro line.

Terrain (Mix) 46:00 [2]

Back home. Got off the bus at the JCCA and ran the powerline which was infinitely more satisfying than plodding along Olive.

Thursday Feb 14, 2008 #

Running (Road) 23:00 [2]

In to work via the bus and Metro. Took the 6:00 bus, which always gets to Delmar just as the Metro is leaving, so I tried getting off at Skinker and sprinting over to the other line to get the Metro at Wash U. It worked (barely, about a minute of slack) and got me to Grand five minutes quicker than if I had picked up the next one at Delmar.

Running (Road) 1:21:00 [2]

From work to Clayton to get brownies at Straub's. Very interesting run, bordering on surreal. I'll write about it in my blog later tonight.

Skating (Ice) 25:00 [3]
weight:166lbs

Today was the day to take the project team out for beers and appetizers, so I drove Kate's car in to work.

Yaya continues to improve in skating, but her feet are getting too big for her skates, so she wanted to take longer breaks between laps. That let me get in a bit more time, depsite getting to the rink a bit late and only having the last 45 minutes of the session.

Tuesday Feb 12, 2008 #

Running (Road) 23:00 [2]

In to work via Bus and Metro.

Running (Road) 26:00 [2]

And back. Keep getting hit with issues just as I'm about to leave for the day and end up staying at work a couple more hours.

Sunday Feb 10, 2008 #

Orienteering (Woods) 33:00 [2] ***
6c

Catching up on domestic life, but did manage to augment a trip to the hardware store with a short session at Babler (1:15).

Cycling (Road) 59:00 [2]
weight:170lbs

G is back in line (albeit at the high end of the range I'm targeting). In to work in the 60" gear. Yes, a fabulous day on a Saturday and I'm working. At least we didn't start until 1, so I got to enjoy the morning outside with Baby-O and ride in with the sun shining.

Cycling (Road) 1:10:00 [2]

Back from work. Always fun to ride through the city late at night, although the stiff headwind (protending a huge temperature drop) made it a bit tougher than usual.

Note

MOM is alive!

I realize that only a handful of system administrators would have any idea what that means, but it's fun to say so we had fun saying it when we wrapped up today. It's entirely possible that I'll work less than 50 hours next week.

Friday Feb 8, 2008 #

Cycling (Road) 1:03:00 [2]

In to work in the 60" gear. Strange, it was quite a bit colder than yesterday afternoon, but I felt a lot warmer. Wasn't dressed much differently.

Cycling (Road) 1:19:00 [2]

Back home via Old Bonhomme, Warson, and Schutz in the 60.

Thursday Feb 7, 2008 #

Running (Road) 35:00 [2]
weight:172lbs

Looks like I took the Gras part of Mardi a bit too seriously. Ran to the bus at Craig, then from Grand station to work.

Cycling (Road) 1:17:00 [2]

Back home from work via Midland. A bit chilly, but only my feet got really cold.

Wednesday Feb 6, 2008 #

Running (Road) 23:00 [2]

Don't remember the last time I took 3 days off in a row. Between the Super Bowl, the usual go-live issues on Monday, and our anniversary yesterday, there just wasn't much opportunity to get anything in. Anyway, legs were pretty stale running to the bus stop this morning.

Running (Road) 49:00 [3]

Work to Grand station, then from the Warson bus stop back home. Includes about 20 minutes at close to tempo pace.

Sunday Feb 3, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

Overdue for some family time. 40 degrees and raining. Favorite team in the super bowl. Seems like a pretty good time for a rest day.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:20:00 [4] ***

6x800@4:30-5:00 slightly longer recovery at Cuivre River (1:15). CR didn't get as much snow and what there was melting fast. For some reason, I brought my trail shoes rather than spikes. The soft footing made it pretty impossible to run at threshold, but I wasn't too far off.

Meanwhile, it was a chance to investigate my latest theory about running fast and navigating (see 1/25-1/30). I kept the intensity high, but also tried to make real sure I was reading the map and staying in contact. The result was six legs that I would be pretty happy to insert into a race I cared about. OK, 4800m in familiar woods proves nothing, but it's a good sign.

Terrain (Snow) 27:00 [2]

Another 5 inches of fresh snow last night, which is enough to cripple this town. Running all the way in (or even to the Clayton station) would have taken a really long time, so I took the Olive bus and picked up the Link at Forest Park. The trip still took a while because the bus was 20 minutes late. Got to work to find a half dozen emails from team members who either can't get out of their subdivisions or are looking for someone to watch their kids. Go-live today is looking less promising.

Running (Road) 20:00 [3]

Finished up at work at 6:30 (yes, we're live) did the quick change and bolted over to Grand station to catch the 6:51 train (or else have to wait a full 50 more minutes for the next bus at Delmar). Good solid tempo running for ten minutes with no warmup, woo hoo! Also jogged easy from the bus to home.
