4 AM

Running (Road) 21:00 [2]
shoes: Lyte33 2

Pre run.
7 AM

Running (Road) 12:00 [2]
shoes: Lyte33 3

Warmup. With a bunch of tiny Kenyans. Pre-race routine is a bit more interesting when you're in the elite field. Succeeded in not doing something insanely stupid like trying to look impressive next to these guys, but it took all my powers of restraint.

Running race (Road) 2:57:53 [5] 26.22 mi (6:47 / mi)
shoes: Lyte33 3

The Woodlands Marathon. Good run. Passed one of the aforementioned Kenyans! (He had cramped up in the cold, wet conditions and was walking in to the next aid station). Anyway, a good race; got hardware for both third master and first grand master.

Full report,

Running (Road) 25:00 [2]
(rest day) shoes: Lyte33 2

Easy jog round The Woodlands.

12 PM

Running (Road) 32:00 [2]
(rest day) shoes: Lyte33 2

Very easy jog round the Woodlands. Came across a new front runner for most pretentious subdivision name: Wyndspire.

Wednesday Feb 25, 2015 #

5 AM

Running (Road) 32:00 [3]
weight:169lbs shoes: Sayonara 2

Over to the gym and then cut M3 down to M2 (7:00, 6:45 miles). That's a wrap for the marathon cycle. Nothing left but the little matter of running the race.
7 PM

Note

Uneventfull trip to Houston, which is obviously a good thing.

Tuesday Feb 24, 2015 #

5 AM

Running (Road) 47:00 [3]
shoes: Sayonara 2

3x5:00T 2:00R on the treadmill, plus a few miles over to the gym (uber frosty) and direct home.

The NWS is just messing with me now. The sixth prediction in as many days is for perfect conditions, but I'm not enough of a fool to think it won't change four more times.
6 PM

Running (Road) 49:00 [2]
shoes: Lyte33 2

FFF run at Chesterfield. Garmin rep was on hand so I tried out a few watches. I guess I'm just not really a gadget kind of guy. They are marvels of technology and really not that much more than a regular sports watch of decent quality, but I just couldn't think of what I would do with that information.

Monday Feb 23, 2015 #

Note

Well, long-range weather forecasting is always dicey, but this is ridiculous. In each of the last 5 days, a wildly different prediction for the Marathon weather has been posted. None of them are particularly dire (though if the current call for Sunday moves up to Saturday, that would suck), but the range is bewildering. Bring something for just about anything seems to be the message. So much for getting it all in a single carryon.
4 PM

Terrain (Mix) 39:00 [2] **
shoes: Boca AT

Two School Loop. Roughly equal mix of grass and very crusty snow.

Sunday Feb 22, 2015 #

7 AM

Terrain (Snow) 29:00 [2] **
shoes: Speedcross 3

New School Loop. Snow was pretty firm and not too deep so didn't slow me down much.

Saturday Feb 21, 2015 #

2 PM

Running (Road) 1:28:00 [3]
shoes: Sayonara 2

A bit over an hour on roads, then M3 on the treadmill...

Gym (Weights) 15:00 [5]

... And the usual two heavy sets, upper only.

Friday Feb 20, 2015 #

2 PM

Terrain (Trail) 1:39:00 [2] *****
shoes: Speedcross 3

Lewis trail plus over and back from the Mound. One could argue that the rigors of a steep and icy trail, not to mention the very real risk of a serious fall, are inappropriate eight days before a warm road marathon. However, one must tend not just the body but also the soul and mine needed reminding that running is more than banging out 6:40's. Took it very easy, walked the sections with insanely bad footing, and finished refreshed on all fronts.

Thursday Feb 19, 2015 #

4 PM

Running (Road) 36:00 [2]
weight:169lbs shoes: Lyte33 2

Easy jog over to the gym where I ran 2 miles on the treadmill...

Gym (Aerobic) 15:00 [2]

... and also spent 15 minutes in the sauna doing very light exercises.

Wednesday Feb 18, 2015 #

5 AM

Running (Road) 1:31:00 [3]
shoes: Sayonara 2

4E 1M 1T 2M 1T 1M 2E. Last quality workout for this cycle.

Easy miles were outside (frosty!), the paced stuff was on the treadmill.

Tuesday Feb 17, 2015 #

5 AM

Running (Road) 59:00 [2]
shoes: Boca AT

Old Farm. Still a fair bit of frozen snot on the roads.
4 PM

Terrain (Snow) 54:00 [2] **
shoes: Lone Peak

Electric Duckling.

Monday Feb 16, 2015 #

8 AM

Terrain (Snow) 59:00 [2] **
shoes: Boca AT

Four School Loop. Only half the prediction, but the 3-4" we did get made me wish I hadn't broken a lace on the rocklites yesterday as they are by far my best shoes for fresh snow. The Newtons worked OK as long as I took really short steps and didn't mind going slow.
11 AM

Note

Took the GRE today (again, but the last time was 29 years ago, so those scores have been erased). Test taking skills are a bit rusty so I didn't do as well as the first go-round, but applying to UMSL with a degree from Cornell is a bit different than applying to Cornell with a degree from RIT, so I'm pretty sure it was good enough.
4 PM

Running (Road) 51:00 [3]
shoes: Speedstar 6

By the time that was done, the roads had cleared a bit. Ran over to the gym for M3...

Gym (Weights) 15:00 [5]

... and the usual two heavy sets, upper only.

Sunday Feb 15, 2015 #

2 PM

Terrain (Trail) 2:35:00 [2] ***
shoes: Rocklite 315

Trails at CC Lake plus over and back on the powerline.

Saturday Feb 14, 2015 #

7 AM

Running (Road) 2:01:00 [3]
shoes: Sayonara 2

An hour with the FFRC run, then 4x10:00T 2:00R and a short warm down.

Friday Feb 13, 2015 #

4 PM

Running (Road) 1:03:00 [3]
shoes: Speedstar 6

Old Farm + Whispering Pines. Need to retire these shoes.

Thursday Feb 12, 2015 #

Note
weight:169lbs (rest day)

Feels like I might be getting sick. This always happens when I taper off a marathon cycle and I've always got better before the race, so I'm not worried about it. Still, going out for a run when the temps are mid-teens didn't seem particularly wise, so I took the day completely off.

Wednesday Feb 11, 2015 #

5 AM

Running (Road) 30:00 [2]
shoes: Speedstar 6

Easy jog round the hood...

Gym (Weights) 15:00 [5]

... with 2 heavy sets, upper only, at the gym.
4 PM

Running (Road) 1:32:00 [3]
shoes: Lyte33 3

Duck(P)@17:42. Then a few easy miles including 8 striders.

So, a sub-18 puts the last indicator in place: it will come down to the weather. Probably should have run it again to make sure I wasn't overcooking the pace, but decided not to ask a question I didn't want the answer to. Actually, I already knew the answer as I did lift it just a bit in the last half mile but I'm pretty sure tempo pace is still comfortably under 18, which is where it needs to be.

The weather, on the other hand, will do what it does. 75F in Houston today (as opposed to 40 here in STL).

Tuesday Feb 10, 2015 #

5 AM

Running (Road) 1:13:00 [2]
shoes: Speedstar 6

In to work.

Monday Feb 9, 2015 #

Running (Road) 1:13:00 [2]
shoes: Lyte33 2

Home from work.

Sunday Feb 8, 2015 #

7 AM

Terrain (Grass) 52:00 [2] **

Four School Barefoot Loop at a fairly pokey pace. Fortunately, running barefoot tends to keep your stride light and bouncy even when you're off the gas. Probably last barefoot run before the marathon as stepping on something sharp at this point would be very bad.
11 AM

Running (Road) 40:00 [2]
shoes: Lyte33 2

Long-ish warmup, as the point was to get in as much heat acclimation as possible.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:19:43 [3] *** 8.5 km (9:23 / km) +320m 7:54 / km
12c shoes: Oroc 280

SLOC Red at Meramec (1:15). All in the north part of the map, which meant lots of climb, bad footing, and fairly straightforward nav. Nav was spot on and legs felt OK, but my lack of woods training had me moving slower than I should have. David got me by a whopping six minutes and I can't even use the hard day yesterday as an excuse, because he ran a few hours at Aeries last night.

Running (Road) 43:00 [2]
shoes: Lyte33 2

More easy running after.

Saturday Feb 7, 2015 #

7 AM

Running (Road) 38:00 [2]
shoes: Lyte33 2

FFF run. First time running with this group and, as expected, not knowing anybody took some of the fun out of the run (compounded by the fact that the faster folks were wearing earbuds so they weren't wanting to talk - why would you wear earbuds on a social run?) Anyway, 10 miles with the FFRC crowd would have been too much given this afternoons plans, so it was this or solo.
2 PM

Running (Road) 2:16:00 [3]
shoes: Lyte33 3

6M 1T 6M 1T with enough hacks along the way to keep the paces honest. If it's this warm and windy on race day, I may not go sub-3, but at least today gave me confidence that it doesn't have to be a 3:10, either.

Friday Feb 6, 2015 #

5 AM

Running (Road) 38:00 [2]
shoes: Speedstar 6

Easy jog round the hood...

Gym (Weights) 15:00 [5]

... with a stop at the gym for the usual two heavy sets, upper only.
4 PM

Running (Road) 1:03:00 [2]
shoes: Sayonara 2

Old Farm + Whispering Pines.

Thursday Feb 5, 2015 #

Note
weight:171lbs (rest day)

Anniversary day (21). Kate would have been fine with me getting in a short run before we went out, but there's really no harm in taking a day completely off at this point in the cycle. The G, on the other hand, is cause for slight concern. It bounced pretty high after the half, but appeared to recovered, but I've been a couple pounds up all week. 2# is probably 5-6s/mi which adds up in a marathon. Need to get that back under 170.

Wednesday Feb 4, 2015 #

5 AM

Running (Road) 1:21:00 [2]
shoes: Sayonara 2

In to work. Found a decent route that's not much longer (should be mid to low 70's if I haven't done track work the day before) and only used about a mile of Olive. Still too far for twice daily, but a good route nonetheless.

Tuesday Feb 3, 2015 #

5 AM

Running (Road) 30:00 [2]
shoes: Lyte33 2

Easy jog round the hood.
3 PM

Running (Track) 2:01:00 [4]
shoes: Lyte33 3

3x1600@6:12 200R, 3x800@2:56 400R, 3x200@38 200R at PNH track on the way home from work.

Note
(rest day)

May or may not have dodged a bullet. My back was not feeling right most of yesterday, but I figured it was just hamstring tightness from Saturday. Woke this morning and when I rolled over it sent all the signals it does when it's about to disable me for a few weeks. This isn't my first rodeo with back issues (the last really serious one coincided with Kate getting pregnant and it doesn't take much imagination to produce the jokes I had to endure in response). Anyway, if I recognize it for what it is, I can usually prevent disaster, so this week has suddenly become the most important week of this cycle. If I get through it without messing myself up; I'm probably in pretty good shape.
4 PM

Terrain (Grass) 38:00 [2] *
(rest day)

Powerline out & back. Had Jury Duty today. They actually had a pretty comfortable desk and chair so I was able to get quite a bit of work done (wasn't called and was dismissed at the end of the day). Back seems OK, but I'll keep being careful.

Sunday Feb 1, 2015 #

2 PM

Terrain (Road) 41:00 [2] **
