Cycling (Trail) 1:04:00 [3]
weight:191lbs

After dark. Lost valley trail at a decent pace.

Orienteering (Woods/Night) 58:00 [2] **
10c

Then some night nav practice on the USGS map of Weldon Spring (1:24). Sort of a control picking course, although the features on USGS maps are far enough apart that most legs were still around 400m.

Could feel that the heel is not 100%, but it didn't bother me, either. No flare-ups after the run. Still, I guess I'll skip the long meet in KC this weekend. Better to let it heal during the part of the season I don't care about.

Mapping (Park) 2:55:00 [1] ****
weight:192lbs

UMSL.You might smirk at calling a college campus intense, but the nature of sprint mapping (lots of detail) and the concrete jungle of UMSL presented quite a few non-trivail representation problems. Obviously, it will not be that complicated for the competitors if I've done my job well.

Would have liked to go longer, but my hands were getting really cold (I hate mapping with gloves on, my manual dexterity is bad enough as it is.

Lots of excellent potential legs and control locations.

Note

I've taken the injured flag off, although I'll still need to be careful for the next few weeks. Mapping hardly qualifies as rigorous exercise, but it was three hours walking with no pain at all, so I think things are looking up.

Cycling (Road) 1:59:00 [2]
weight:190lbs (injured)

Over to Webster Groves and back.

Cycling (Road) 56:00 [3] *
23c

Needed an O-fix, so I rode the street bike-O course from 2004 on the Webster Groves map (1:20). It's actually pretty intense navigation if ridden briskly. Also got a reminder of how much better mountain bike brakes are than road brakes. Nearly blew through a red-light when I didn't get on the binders quick enough. It's been too long since I've been on skinny tires.

Friday Feb 24, 2006 #

Cycling (Mix) 2:32:00 [3] *
(injured)

Forgot to weigh in this morning, but I'm sure I was heavy because Kate made Lasanga last night. After eating my fill, I ate what Baby-O didn't want as well.

So I figured I should try riding to work which turns out to be no small thing. You can read the details here.

Cycling (Mix) 1:38:00 [3] *

Ride home - if I still needed a reason after this morning to not ride to work again, I got it.

Thursday Feb 23, 2006 #

Cycling (Trainer) 30:00 [2]
weight:190lbs (injured)

Easy spin on the trainer.

Wednesday Feb 22, 2006 #

Gym (Cardio) 15:00 [2]
weight:192lbs (injured)

AM: Warmup on the elliptical trainer.

Gym (Weights) 30:00 [5]

AM: 3 sets, heavy, lower body only, still no squats (heel is much improved, but no point in aggrevating it right now). Also did some pullups because I'm tired of being a wimp.

Cycling (Trainer) 30:00 [2]

PM: Easy spin on the trainer.

Tuesday Feb 21, 2006 #

Cycling (Trainer) 45:00 [4]
weight:190lbs (injured)

4x1:00@pursuit pace, 3:00R.

Monday Feb 20, 2006 #

Cycling (Trail) 2:29:00 [3]
weight:191lbs (injured)

From Mt. Plutonium through Lost Valley, Katy, and then about half of Matson Hill. Matson Hill was greasy in spots, which surprised me (I expected it would still be frozen). I cut that loop short because the semi-slicks weren't working at all.

Sunday Feb 19, 2006 #

Gym (Cardio) 30:00 [3]
weight:190lbs (injured)

Modest interval workout on the elliptical trainer.

Gym (Weights) 20:00 [4]

Followed by 2 sets, moderately heavy, lower only, still no squats (although I did do presses - which felt fine).

Swimming (Pool) 20:00 [3]

Finally 8x100@1:42 go on 2:30 which is more recovery than I usually take. Was feeling a bit tired.

Saturday Feb 18, 2006 #

Cycling (Trainer) 50:00 [2]
weight:191lbs (injured)

Too cold to paddle or ride outside, so I just spent some time on the trainer. High temps for last three days: 75, 35, 8.

Friday Feb 17, 2006 #

Cycling (Trainer) 40:00 [2]
weight:191lbs (injured)

Didn't feel very motivated, so just rode easy on the trainer for a while. Long week at work - I'm actually working 2 jobs right now (at a time when I thought I wouldn't be working at all).

Thursday Feb 16, 2006 #

Note
weight:190lbs (injured)

It worked! Well, that and drinking about a gallon of water to keep my appetite down.

In less happy news, work and personal conflicts have taken Georgia, Florida, and Cincinnati all off the schedule. That sucks.

Gym (Cardio) 32:00 [2]

Warmup/dn on the elliptical trainer.

Gym (Weights) 29:00 [4]

2 sets, moderately heavy, upper only

Wednesday Feb 15, 2006 #

Gym (Cardio) 45:00 [4]
weight:193lbs (injured)

Uh-oh, G value out of range! Will have to do something about that. A tough interval workout on the elliptical trainer should help. Heel continues to improve, but I still can't run on it.

Gym (Weights) 15:00 [5]

Three heavy sets, lower body only. Skipped squats, leg press and calf, all of which would have put undue strain on the heel. That only left curls, extensions and those goofy abductor/adductor machines.

Tuesday Feb 14, 2006 #

Cycling (Road) 1:04:00 [2]
weight:192lbs (injured)

Over to Queeny and back.

Cycling (Trail) 44:00 [3] **
25c

Bike-O course from 1999 at Queeny (1:10). Trails have changed a bit, so had to read features as well as trail junctions. Heel doesn't hurt when riding. That's good news. At least I can get some lower body work in while it's healing.

Oh yeah, it was 65 degrees. Wacky.

Monday Feb 13, 2006 #

Note
weight:191lbs (injured)

Heel pain is back, causing a slight limp.

Sunday Feb 12, 2006 #

Running (Grass) 18:00 [2]
weight:189lbs

Warmup/dn.

Orienteering race (woods) 34:05 [4] **** 3.2 km (10:39 / km) +120m 8:58 / km
12c

What better way to recover from a 14-hour race than running a short course? Ran the SLOC meet at Cliff Cave (1:7500). Not as clean as I would have liked, but not bad either. David decided to rest on his laurels so there was no chance to even the death match. Anna Shafer-Skelton ran really well. I wonder how much longer until she beats me at one of these things. map.

Orienteering race (Woods) 18:30 [4] **** 2.2 km (8:25 / km) +50m 7:33 / km
8c

Ran the intermediate course, which was actually more technical than the advanced, it just cut out distance and the big climb. Much cleaner and moving through the light green a lot better, too.

Saturday Feb 11, 2006 #

Orienteering race (Woods) 40:00 [2] **
3c

Bonk Hard Chill AR with Dana Mareshie. Took it out slow and the nav was trivial (although that didn't stop the whole pack from blowing #1, we got a good chuckle out of the fact that we were one of the first ones there and had walked almost the whole way). Was around mid pack at the end of the run.

Paddling race (Kayak) 1:01:00 [2] **
1c

In a canoe using our own Kayak paddles. Really cold and windy. Second half was in the wider part of the lake with the wind in our faces. Held our position.

Orienteering race (Woods) 1:57:00 [2] **
8c

Pretty easy loop, but enough true nav that we moved up quite a bit even though we didn't run much.

Paddling race (Kayak) 1:28:00 [3] **
4c

Brutally cold on the wide part of the lake. Paddled hard just to keep from freezing.

Running race (Road) 15:00 [2]

Up the road from the boat take out to the TA. Were told we were 2nd co-ed team.

Cycling race (Trail) 3:09:00 [2] *
8c

Huge mental error. We left the TA without checking out. Had to go all the way back from the first control which meant riding some tough single track three times instead of once (not to mention watching a whole bunch of teams pass us going the other way). 40-minute mistake. Other than that, it was a pretty straightforward bike section. Mostly singletrack with a few fire roads.

Running race (Mix) 35:00 [1]

Rather silly little scavenger hunt event. Was surprised to find that we finished this as third co-ed. I guess some of the guys who passed us just looked like girls.

Cycling race (Road) 1:13:00 [2] *
3c

Dana, who had been struggling a bit seemed to pick up some steam with the knowledge that we were still in the hunt. This section included a short bikewack. The only challenge was avoiding the redneck that was yelling at everybody.

Orienteering race (Woods/Night) 3:03:00 [2] **
5c

An otherwise excellent event spoiled by a truly horrible nav section. The map showed the old trail network which is geometrically the same as the new trail network, but the trails aren't even remotely in the same area. Had we had just follwed the trails we would have found the controls easily, but I kept trying to go to where the control circle was. Managed to find the old trails but, of course, no control. Probably dumped 90 minutes. Naturally, all the teams that couldn't read the map well enough at night to realize that the trails were all mapped wrong blew through the course with no difficulties.

Cycling race (Road) 35:00 [2] *
1c

Back to the finish. Not really sure of the split as I was too disgusted to care. Racing with Dana was great fun. She came through fine even though she is out of shape after recovering from knee surgery. I'm not really pissed at losing a placing since we really didn't expect to be competitive. Just too bad to see a race messed up like that. All the RD had to do was include a note saying the trails were mapped wrong and just to follow them. David Frei managed to figure it out. He and Jeff won the thing. Death match 1-0 David.

Note
weight:192lbs

I wonder how much higher that weight number can go before Peter starts calling me fat. Actually, the gain this week is intentional - I always let it go up a couple pounds before a long event.

Thursday Feb 9, 2006 #

Note
weight:191lbs

A short workout would have been nice, but instead I spent the evening sorting through my gear for this weekend's Bonk Hard Chill.

Wednesday Feb 8, 2006 #

Running (Road) 43:00 [2]
weight:191lbs

Easy jog round the hood.

Tuesday Feb 7, 2006 #

Cycling (Trail) 1:35:00 [2]
weight:189lbs

Lost valley trail at night with Dana.

Monday Feb 6, 2006 #

Running (Track) 49:00 [4]
weight:191lbs

400@91, 800@2:58, 1600@5:57, 800@2:51, 400@77 all 400R. Last one was a bit quick for the spirit of the workout, but felt fine.

Note

Oh, by the way. The unemployed thing was a lot shorter than I had hoped. Back to work today.

Sunday Feb 5, 2006 #

Paddling (Kayak) 1:27:00 [2]
weight:191lbs

In the canoe with Dana using kayak paddles.

Saturday Feb 4, 2006 #

Note
weight:190lbs

Right heel feels tender, not sure why. I don't recall bruising it. Figured I'd give it a day's rest.

Map Running (Trail) 15:00 [2] *
weight:190lbs

To course and back.

Orienteering (Woods) 40:48 [4] *** 6.0 km (6:48 / km) +130m 6:08 / km
17c weight:190lbs

Test ran Blue Middle Course for Team Trials at S-F. Close to race pace. Winning time should be right around 30 minutes.

Mapping (Woods) 5:14:00 [1] ***

Pretty much finished the fieldwork for the S-F map. I will have to go back later in the spring and recheck vegetation in a few areas. Also need to finish some areas that won't likely be used for competition, but somebody could wander in there.

Thursday Feb 2, 2006 #

Orienteering (Woods) 1:42:00 [3] ***
20c

So my contract is up and I don't have another one yet. That's cool - except for the zero income part of it. Anyway, seems like a good time to finish up the S-F map. I drive all the way down there and it starts raining. Nothing that's going to pass quick, either. It's that steady drizzly crap that goes on for hours. So, drive back to St. Louis. Of course, Kate now thinks it's family day and we take Baby-O over to Faust Park. Baby-O goes down for her nap at 3 and I manage to get out of the house to do some nav practice at Rockwoods (1:15). A whole day off and all I get in is a slightly longer than normal run at Rockwoods. I took a day off for this? Oh wait, I didn't. I don't have a job.

Wednesday Feb 1, 2006 #

Cycling (Road) 48:00 [2]
weight:190lbs

Over to Ballwin to pick up my car after the 60K maintenance. Can't believe I've driven that far in under three years. George is right about one thing: we're addicted to oil.
