Note

Stefan Kinell created a Python script and a QGIS model for the Kinneberg method for creating vectors for the cliffs from Karttapullautin. You can then import the vector cliffs directly into OOM or even OCAD.

It is kind of neat and probably useful for remote mapping. I've been using Kinneberg method with a step-by-step process. It isn't hard, but having a QGIS model might make it a little easier. It should also make it easier to share the method.

I ran part of a course at Clinton Rockhaven. I took some odd routes to avoid running in the forest or to check out an area I wanted to look at. I felt ok, but certainly got tired near the end. I also felt really awkward going up hill or on rough footing.

Some of the trails are in good shape. But the trail that was partially flooded two years ago are either gone or getting no use. I don't know if the trail riders will rebuild those trails.

I shuffled around on West Campus. Nice day to be out on the trails.

Note

I did some fieldchecking at Holcom - about an hour in the morning and an hour after watching the KU basketball game.

I realized I didn't have the display setting at the brightest level yesterday. I set it at full brightness today. It seemed to make it a bit easier to see the map. Sunny weather and little shade is a good test, I guess.

The park has changed a lot since the air photos (2014 or 2016). They've replaced some of the lights around the ball diamonds. They've also moved the fences.

running 30:00 [2]

Short jog on West Campus. Very nice out. I cut the run short to get home to watch the Jayhawks.

Note

I decided to make a sprint map for my Thanksgiving project. I'll map Holcom Park at 1:4000. I spent some time this morning generating contours from lidar and creating a base map to start with. I did a little drafting from the air photo (some road edges and sidewalks). I moved the map over to my mapping tablet. I wandered over to Holcom and did a bit over 30 minutes of field checking.

Things I learned today....some Orienteer Kansas maps are in the Library of Congress' map collection.

running 1:00:00 [2]

My first headlamp jog of the season. I shuffled around on the trails on West Campus. A bit of light rain fell part of the time.

I discovered some newly cleared old trails. The old trails were too overgrown to run, but some sort of tractor has cleared them. It adds maybe 100 meters of places to run, so not much.

Stretched my legs with a little jog.

Dinner was leftover black bean burgers. Yummy.

I ran a course at the Perry Trails and did a bit of extra exploring. I felt slow. No, I was slow AND I felt slow. Every bit of rough terrain or up hill was a chore.

My orienteering feels rusty.

I found a little bit of fence that should be on the map. I stopped, sketched it in, and will add it to the map.

I need a Thanksgiving break project. I was planning to take some time to update parts of the Overlook map and set out tapes for the December night O'. But we postponed the event. The local health department recommends no gatherings of more than 10 people (down from 15 a week or so earlier and 45 most of the year). I think the rule only applies if proper social distancing can't be done. But, I think we should be extra cautious and considered the 45 and 15 as limits. Anyways, it seems like the best decision. But, it means I don't need to update the map and hang tapes. So what to do?

Note

A note about Covid-19. One risk is that you get sick. Another risk is that you infect someone else. Another is that you get yourself in a situation where the local contact tracers have to trace you. That's a different kind of risk. But it makes a difference. If you can avoid being someone the health department has to find and talk to, you can free up those resources. That's one of the reasons to avoid larger groups (even if large is just 15 people).
