Longish, slow and easy jog. I carried my 1:10,000 map of Lawrence.
The map is a summer project. I'm not going to field check the map. But as I run and spot changes, I'll make those. I can make a lot of improvements from air photos. I will also import some of the existing sprint maps from around town. This morning I added West Campus forest from Ulrik's map.
Mary got takeout for lunch. I had enchiladas with beans. Refried beans

Shuffling around.
I made a rough orienteering-like map of Lawrence. The scale is 1:10,000. So far it is mostly OpenStreetMap + lidar derived 5 meter contours + building footprints (mostly from the City). I carried the map with me on my jog, looking at it occasionally. I need to do some desk work to clean things up - new buildings and roads on Daisy Hill, for example.
Muggy out and I was soaked by the time I finished. I was also tired the last 20-25 minutes.
Stagnant air and light winds have caused thick smoke from Saturday night fireworks to be trapped near the surface, causing unhealthy to very unhealthy air conditions across much of northeast Kansas. Conditions are expected to improve after 8 to 10 AM as increased atmospheric mixing allows for the dispersion of the smoke. Those with respiratory concerns should avoid outdoor exposure until conditions improve later this morning.

I got out the door a little later than planned. When I first looked out and saw the smoke, I decided to wait a half an hour or so and see if things improved. I think the smoke was a little less thick when I got started.
My plan had been to do a short run but include 10 minutes hard. The smoke troubled me, so I thought I'd try two 5 minute efforts with plenty of rest. I started my first 5 minute effort and felt lousy. So I stopped before I reached 2 minutes. Maybe it was just my imagination. Maybe just a bad day. Maybe the bad air. Whatever.
In the beginning part of the run I spotted a mountain bike on the road. I wasn't sure, but it almost looked like the rider was looking at a map board. It was too far away to be sure. Later, I spotted the same rider and realized they did have a map board and it was MeanGene!
From the Daisy Hill bridge I couldn't really see things beyond 23rd and Iowa. The smoke was too thick. That's under 1 mile. Yuck.
It is almost 11 a.m. as I write this and the air looks ok now.

I did the MTBO course Mary designed and biked yesterday (and MeanGene biked this morning).
I did the first 7 controls, then took a bit of a detour to head over to the main campus, then came back to control 7 and finished the course.
I didn't time myself for the MTBO. I'm guessing it was about 25 minutes.
Fun. Sweaty.

Also...no beans eaten today. But we had beans with dinner last night.
