running 1:30:00 [2]

Trail run at Clinton. There seemed to be some sort of event going on, but I don't think the Trailhawks race is until next weekend. Maybe it was a Trailnerds event.

The first 30 minutes felt bad, but I figured things might get better and they did. I kept up a slow, easy pace and started feeling ok.

I got out the door early-ish, before it got too hot.

Shuffled around on West Campus. Hot out there, but still good to get out and move around.

Work commute. When I got home, I rested a bit and then mowed the lawn. Hot out there.

Note

I followed a good bit of the women's WOC race today. I was especially interested in Marianne Andersen and was glad to see her run so well. That inspired me to look up some old notes I had about her training from 10 years ago.

I'm not sure how much training she did in 2005, but in 2006 she trained 950 hours. For 2007, her plan was to train less than she'd done the previous two years (so we can guess that she trained maybe ~900 hours in 2005). In 2007, she cut back the training hours to about 860. That's a lot of training. That's also probably why she was so good back then. I suppose that sort of training may also be why she didn't run a WOC or world cup race in 2011-2016.

A rough estimate is that she trained 900 + 950 + 860 for the period of 2005-2007. That works out to an average of about 2.5 hours per day for 3 years. Some of her training was skiing and biking, but a load of it was running.

MTB cycling 1:40:00 [1]

MTB on the bike path, roads and some gravel. Nice day - mostly cloudy and not too hot. I was tired at the end. When I got home I opened a bottle of Coke and drank it. It was good.

running 1:30:00 [2]

A mini-adventure. Mary and I drove down to Fort Scott to check out Gunn Park. I made a quick base map - KP lidar + trails shown on OSM. I had a MTB trail map that looked ok and showed some trails not otherwise shown on OSM.

I jogged around on the trails, checking things out. The forest was mostly nice. That was a big surprise. The contours were steep in places with some interesting shapes and features. There's also a flood plain area. The middle of the park is open with some scattered trees, two ponds, and some park features (like shelters). The MTB trail network is more interesting than I'd initially expected. They've expanded a bit compared to the MTB map I'd found. There are also some short cuts that make it more interesting and would give some route choice options if you did MTBO.

The area would make a nice map, but it is 90 minutes to drive from Lawrence. That's too far to make it useful for us. On the other hand, it might be fun to make a rough map and use it just for fun. There's a small campground in the middle of the map...maybe drive down there some Saturday morning, do some training and exploring, camp overnight, do some more training and exploring, and then drive home.

When we got home, I added trails from my GPS tracks.

MTB cycling 1:45:00 [1]

MTB on roads and single track. I biked over to the river trails and did a lap. The trail was in good shape (I skipped the Mud Creek bit because of high water to get there).

My technique on the trail felt a bit off. I wasn't going into corners at the right speed (sometimes too fast, but sometimes too slow).

I biked in the heat of the day and I felt the heat.

running 10:00 [2]

I woke up early and decided to get in a little jog before settling in to watch the WOC sprint relay and enjoy a cup of coffee.

I jogged through a little sprint-ish course that Mary designed a month or so ago on an enlarged version of the neighborhood map that shows Holcom Park. The map was a tiny map from last year (I think) and was made at 1:10,000. It doesn't show what you'd expect on a sprint map.
