I ran an old course at Rockcrusher. It was a course I'd designed for an event a year or two ago.I took routes that I would never take, like going straight through the junky forest when a trail route would be faster. I worked on keeping my head up and looking ahead, but there were still times when I'd catch myself not looking ahead. Usually that was in junky forest or rocky footing.

As I was starting to drive away, a car was heading up the road. I did the little steering wheel wave and then noticed that (a) the car seemed to have an orienteering front plate and (b) it looked like Susy (or Sandy?) driving. I turned around and went back to the corner. It was Susy and Connie. They'd come to Rockcrusher for today's orienteering...not realizing that it was scheduled for tomorrow. We chatted a bit and I gave them a couple of old maps so they could explore a bit. I hope they'll be back tomorrow.

Note the heart rate is screwy for the first bit. I never used to have any trouble with the monitor picking up quickly, but the last few times I've run it takes 5-10 minutes before I'm sweating well and the readings look right.

I made the run a bit short because I figured I'd like to save a bit of energy for tomorrow and I wanted to watch most of the KU game. It was a fun game.

Also, it was hot out there. The current temp is 72F. Yuck.

And I saw a coyote at Rockcrusher.

Note

Stopped at Tonganoxie on the way to KC. I looked around a bit at the Tonganoxie elementary and middle school grounds. The map will need some work to re-do some contours. The lidar is 2006, before they did a bunch of construction and earth moving. Otherwise the terrain seems ok. They've got some cross country trails and undeveloped land to add interest.

I also had a chance to chat with Nick, the teacher at TMS who asked us about organizing some orienteering for his class. I didn't realize that he had done some orienteering. He was at the overlook last weekend.

In KC we saw Cookie to get our taxes all set, then hit Ikea for kottbullar med potatismos och lingon.

Shuffling around to/from the start and finish of some O' practice on West Campus.

I wanted to do something with a map. I dug into the files and found a control picking course on West Campus. Perfect. I did the first 40 controls and stopped when it was getting dark enough that I couldn't really read the map without difficulty. Lots of fun.

The work commute. Ho hum.

running 35:00 [2]

I shuffled around on west campus. There is enough light that I didn't take a real headlamp. Instead I carried a little Petzl. It was useful for the trails near the end.

I managed to just miss the traffic signal at Clinton Parkway both going to and coming from west campus.

Work commute.

Most interesting part of the day was when I saw a police car racing by my window. The car was going fast and on the edge of reckless. When I saw that it turned and went the wrong way over the river bridge, I figured something was up. I walked over to the window that looks out over the river. I saw a person standing on the outside of the railing, looking like they were intending to jump. There were a couple of cars stopped on the bridge next to the person and a couple of police cars arrived. One of the officers came up to the person and calmly grabbed them in a bear hug and pulled them back over the railing. It was impressive. Well done by the PD. I hope the person will be able to get some help, but I'm worried about the level of mental health services in the community.

I checked Cristina's log and needed 3 hours to stay ahead of her. That was more than I was prepared for. Instead, I did a nice and easy trail run from Rockcrusher. I carried the map and looked at it, but didn't do anything I'd call orienteering.

When I arrived, Mary and Sandy were just starting. They were wearing long sleeves. I wondered if I'd need more than a short sleeve top, so I added a long-sleeve top to my pack. I didn't need it.

During the last 30 minutes I was day dreaming about setting up some sort of long event on the south shore. Maybe something for Feb 2018. My thinking was a long, but easy, orienteering course that could be suitable for adventure racers.
