Note

Yesterday I pumped up my commuter bike tires. This morning the front tire was flat. I didn't ride my bike to work, since I had a meeting in the evening and didn't want to be stuck at work with a flat tire. But, before I left, I filled the tire with air. When I got home, it was still full of air. I'm thinking that when I pumped up the tire yesterday I did something that made the valve not work. There's probably a lesson in there.

Work tonight was mostly good but somewhat surreal....I had a recommendation about having guidelines to ensure consistent and complete agreements between the City and County. This came from looking at a bunch of agreements that weren't complete and were ambiguous. One example was a payment from the County for a fire department building. There was an incomplete agreement and it took something like 6 years to eventually get paid, largely because the agreement didn't cover anything about how the City would be paid. A lot of money was involved. If I remember right, the inflation cost alone was work about $175K.

Management disagreed with the recommendation. They explained that you can't have guidelines because each agreement is different and you can't unilaterally set what's going to be in the agreement. That's basically what they said in writing. They said the same thing in the meeting. But, the manager added that they have a consistent process that routes any agreements through the law department, where they have standards to follow. Well, hello....that's what the recommendation says. So the recommendation is implemented.

I think the City Manager's Office just is unwilling to admit that they've implemented a recommendation that comes from me, even when it is something that they decide to do. Is that just insecurity? Is it confusion?

orienteering 40:00 [2] ***

My legs felt sore, but I wanted to get some exercise in. I drew a little course on the riverfront park map. Temps were warm (near 50?) and a rain fell off-and-on.

I tested my new magnifier for map reading and it worked ok. It doesn't quite sit the same as my other magnifier, but with a little practice, I think it'll be fine.

At one point on the course, I looked up and saw 3 bald eagles.

orienteering race 53:59 [5]
13c

Another reasonably good run.

I took several falls, including an awkward fall on my left shoulder just before punching at 5.

I felt a bit unsure in the middle of the leg to 11. Things just didn't quite look right. I think I got a bit behind on map reading.

I slowed near the end and Doug Hollowell managed to beat me on the day. We were close both days.

My warm up wasn't what I wanted, but wasn't too terrible.

orienteering race 52:30 [5] ***

GAOC green at FDR. Fun but hot.

Tired from the first few steps - the first control was a short leg with 5 lines of climb.

I was running steadily, if not quickly, and was orienteering reasonably well. I've been focusing on keeping my head up. I do that always, but I've been doing some extra training on that the last few months. It seemed to pay off in the open forests on this map. I spotted a number of the controls from a long ways off. It is fun when you spot a control and you can tell that another runner in front of you hasn't yet seen it.

I got a bit turned leaving the next to last control. I knew I was heading to a road, got a bit turned, and then just ran to the road. That wasn't so good.

There were a lot of long times on the day. I think the warm temps explains some of the trouble (mid/upper 70s). Robin S told me they had some people with heat/dehydration problems. The terrain from 7 to 10 is a bit unusual and might have caused a few mistakes, too.

orienteering race 17:44 [5] ***

Sprint at McIntosh. We flew to Atlanta on the morning of the race and that usually makes it hard to orienteer well. The course was straightforward without anything tricky. That's probably a good thing for my travel-addled mind and body.

After the race, a USMAOC runner came up to me and said, "are you from Kansas?" It turns out he is from Meriden and is in his first year at West Point. He had no idea there was any orienteering in Kansas. Meriden is only about a 30-minute drive from Lawrence. He grew up about 7 miles from an orienteering map. He discovered orienteering at W.P. during some sort of navigation training.

Here's his log: http://www.attackpoint.org/userprofile.jsp/user_16...

Head lamp run on West Campus. This was the first test of my latest pants. I was happy with how they worked.
